In Madison, Wisconsin, adulthood’s challenges include navigating college town politics, finding love in the dairy state, and securing tables at truly exceptional American eateries. From farm-to-table pioneers to modern classics, these twelve restaurants have become local institutions where friendships are forged over perfect burgers, craft beers, and seasonal pies. We’ve spent months in these booths and at these bars—all in the name of delicious research.

Gates & Brovi

Gates & Brovi

When I first moved to Madison, my friends kept telling me I had to try Gates & Brovi for a casual dinner. I distinctly remember the first time I walked in on a Friday night; I took care to wear something comfortable but presentable, knowing this was the kind of place where you could relax but still feel like you were out on the town. I knew that Gates & Brovi had to find its way into my weekend rotation as the restaurant where you go when you want good food without any fuss.

In your twenties and thirties, Gates & Brovi feels like a spot where you’re going to either have the best fish fry of your life or just enjoy a fun night with friends—the vibe is that inviting! It’s also great for a happy hour cocktail.

Parkway | Family Restaurant

This is a local Madison spot with an exceedingly kind staff. It’s busy and cozy, and the eggs are delicious and they have a stellar omelette (and I say this as someone who ‘doesn’t eat eggs’). There is also something infectious about the energy; half of the people I’ve brought here have turned to me as we’re leaving and exclaimed, ‘We should come back here for breakfast tomorrow!’

Steenbock’s On Orchard

Steenbock

I remember when I was in my early thirties and first discovered the expansive windows at Steenbock’s On Orchard and felt that nothing could possibly be more inviting than dining there—like great comfort existed within. I also thought it was so charming that they were always busy during lunch when the university was in session. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever had the chance to try the Club Sandwich.

I always get the Smash Burger and a salad, to share with a companion—let’s talk about that surprisingly delicious burger, too. Also, no Steenbock’s blurb would be complete without a mention of the happy hour bites—a fantastic value flourish.

Marigold Kitchen

Marigold Kitchen

This is the classic, and it’s definitely been my number one for years now. I will never forget the first time I entered Marigold Kitchen in my early twenties and a friend whispered that the corned beef hash was legendary—one of those Madison memories that gets seared into your brain. Recently, I’ve been fixated on the golden turmeric latte and turkey sandwich, but you cannot go wrong with this menu.

When I eat at Marigold Kitchen, I feel like everything in my life has significance, like all my thoughts are written in a large bold font.

Camp Trippalindee

Camp Trippalindee

I always knew I wanted this restaurant to play a pivotal role in my novel, in particular for a moment in the story when the characters are evolving and accessing a greater level of confidence. There is something decidedly nostalgic and ‘grown-up’ about this quiet, warmly-lit rooftop spot—you feel ten percent more relaxed while enjoying the view there.

Badger Tavern

$ | (608) 286-1450 | WEBSITE

Badger Tavern

It’s easy to imagine a simpler life for myself at Badger Tavern. The food here is so satisfying. Once, I watched a regular at Badger Tavern for a Friday Fish Fry and he was wearing faded jeans, a flannel shirt, and a worn baseball cap, and I remember thinking, ‘I wish I could do anything with half the comfort and ease as him.’ The restaurant has some of that same regular energy to it. It’s an extremely stellar neighborhood spot, too—the cheese curds are so good.

delecTable

$$$$ | (608) 204-0300 | WEBSITE

delecTable

Any food enthusiast in Madison needs a go-to fine dining spot in their repertoire. I have always aspired to be a ‘culinary adventurer,’ while never quite committing; every sophisticated, discerning person I know has very specific and interesting food preferences, while I’m always like, ‘Uhh, do you have something… comforting?’ DelecTable makes it all very accessible and delightful (and the super nice chef often comes out to chat about the dishes).

I always get served something exceptional, and I can tell friends later, ‘Oh, you haven’t tried the 11-course Wisconsin farm-to-table experience with cocktail pairings?’ Also, I spent an incredible anniversary dinner at the Madison location—they brought out special vegetarian options with fun, unexpected elements!

Gooseberry on the Square

$ | (608) 467-6552 | WEBSITE

Gooseberry on the Square

At first, eating at Gooseberry on the Square was jarring for me because it felt like I was eating at a diner’s cousin: similar features, but the warmth and comfort were notably different. I had the Breakfast Skillet with coffee here recently, though, and was reminded that Gooseberry has a very cozy-Sunday-morning-in-a-flannel-shirt charm, a homeliness to it that is very appealing. Wonderful people watching, too—I always spot someone eating here I want to write a short story about.

Lucky’s 1313 Brew Pub

$ | (608) 250-8989 | WEBSITE

Lucky

This Madison brew pub feels like the quintessential best friends meeting up after work spot, so much so that I am dismayed to realize now I didn’t include it in my article. The two friends collapse into their bar stools—one immediately recounting a strange Tuesday night, the other narrating a ‘whole thing’ at work they desperately need to vent about; they tell the bartender twice they need another minute (even though they always end up ordering the same thing—one of those creative cocktails).

And they remain for the quickest three-and-a-half hours of their weeks. Every time I’ve left Lucky’s 1313 Brew Pub, I think, ‘I love my friends!’

Bierock

$ | (608) 515-8087 | WEBSITE

Bierock

I’ll admit: I was partly drawn here because Bierock is just a short walk from the Duck Pond, where I’ve spent many summer evenings watching Mallards games. That said, this place is genuinely delightful. I tried their lamb bierock there, and it truly felt like a cozy neighborhood gem, which I mean as high praise. This would also be a perfect spot for a casual hangout with friends.

Bistro 525

$$ | (608) 251-3033 | WEBSITE

Bistro 525

I love the name Bistro 525. This restaurant slots into an important use case for someone in their early thirties: the reliable celebratory dinner spot. You’re not going here every week, but it’s ideal for the special occasion meal. One of your friends will secure the reservation for 8:30pm on a Saturday night (‘just have a late lunch!’), and everyone gets a little dressed up. When you walk in, you wonder if you went a tad too casual.

You order cheese curds for the table to share even though everyone’s already getting a bistro burger or BLT wrap, and you’re all going to drink too much of their impressive beer selection and take an embarrassing group selfie on the way out. It’s perfect.

Settle Down Tavern

$$ | (608) 442-6335 | WEBSITE

Settle Down Tavern

Wandering through Madison’s oldest settled block and stumbling upon Settle Down Tavern, it feels like you’ve discovered a hidden gem, wrapped in coziness and character. The staff—always with a welcoming smile and a quick recommendation—are among the most attentive servers I’ve encountered. The clean outdoor seating under string lights, the fun music drifting from the speakers… the space is filled with a sense of ease. Also, the flavorful descriptions on the menu are reason to visit alone.

Order the Magic Grain Bowl to start.
