Amidst this culinary mosaic, American cuisine holds its own vibrant ground, from classic burger joints to innovative New American hotspots. With so many options, your stomach might stage a rebellion. So we’ve done the delicious legwork for you.

The Duck Dive
$$ | (858) 273-3825 | WEBSITE

The Duck Dive has been a San Diego favorite for years, and judging by the crowds that pack this place for game days and weekend brunch, it’s still going strong. The short answer why: the casual spot runs over with cheer. There are festive decorations everywhere, tinsel and Santa hats, and ornaments wrapped around the ceiling beams.
Adding to the lively vibe is impressive food—like the flavorful ahi poke tacos, Aloha burger with duck fat fries, and a perfectly grilled Mahi taco, which doesn’t skimp on freshness, unlike other spots in town.
TopSail
$$ | (619) 719-4961 | WEBSITE

TopSail is the standout waterfront dining option in San Diego. The outdoor patio offers sweeping views of the horizon, and there’s a cozy indoor space with warm lighting and nautical touches. Even the small plates have a flair for the crowd-pleasing, like the crispy brussel sprouts with balsamic glaze and the perfectly seasoned Cajun fries. This place also does a fantastic lobster taco that’s become a local favorite.
Getting the flatbread topped with fresh ingredients, next to a strong, mint-packed mojito, is our favorite antidote to any sunny afternoon. The service is generally friendly and efficient, though it can get a bit slow when the place fills up. Prices are reasonable, with small plates around $12–$18 and cocktails about $14 each. While the overhead music could use an upgrade, the overall atmosphere is fun and intimate, making it a spot we look forward to returning to.
The Shop: Pizza + Cocktails
$$ | (858) 524-6565 | WEBSITE

The Shop: Pizza + Cocktails is a destination spot that will make you feel like you’ve discovered the West Coast’s best-kept secret. Pretzels & Pints
$ | (619) 230-5353 | WEBSITE

Pretzels & Pints is both a snack bar and casual hangout that serves a lineup of excellent, simply prepared, $5-ish pretzels. The Philly pretzel is praised for its soft dough and authentic flavor, and the Munich pretzel offers a satisfyingly chewy alternative. But don’t be deceived by the straightforwardness of it all—the high-quality housemade dough and rotating beer selection make all the grocery store pretzels and mass-market lagers that fill your fridge look like amateur hour.
This walk-in only spot is built for laid-back drinks and snacks that don’t cost the equivalent of one parking ticket. It’s especially useful when Eagles game energy makes you incapable of cooking anything more complicated than a sandwich.
Crest Cafe
$ | (619) 295-2510 | WEBSITE

San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood, known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community and welcoming atmosphere, is home to plenty of cozy breakfast spots and all-day cafes. One to bookmark at the top of your must-visit list is Crest Cafe. The friendly-service spot keeps their menu stocked with fantastic breakfast quesadillas, blueberry biscuit French toast, and tempting specials.
Don’t skip the catfish poboy or the French toast with raspberries and ricotta—both are highly effective ways to get us out the door with a smile.
Fig Tree Cafe Pacific Beach
$ | (858) 274-2233 | WEBSITE

Breakfast at this walk-in only spot feels like eating a meal in a friend’s (cool) beach house. There are only a handful of outdoor tables, and a roving Pacific breeze that keeps folks company while they wait—and there will be a wait. But it’s worth it, because the snappy, delicious dishes here will make you pledge your allegiance to short rib Benedict for the rest of time. Also get your hands on their buttermilk pecan coffee cake, which is rich and not too sweet.
Bivouac Ciderworks
$$ | (619) 725-0844 | WEBSITE

There’d be a Bivouac Ciderworks on the corner of every neighborhood in town if we had our way. The rustic restaurant is the poster child for cozy date nights and “quick” catch-ups with friends that turn into extra-long meals with multiple rounds of ciders. The swings are always whimsical and fun, the rustic decor is warm, and the themed location makes the dining room feel thrilling. The new American dishes alone are what you want on hand when you decide to stay for two more hours.
Options vary, but the juicy chicken sandwich with its crispy exterior and the creamy Green Goddess Hummus plate packed with flavor are permanent mainstays, and what we always come back for.
Hideaway Pacific Beach
$$ | (619) 693-4396 | WEBSITE

A night out at this Pacific Beach hotspot is organized fun, in the best way. Generous plates of pizzas loaded with toppings, the Hideaway burger with truffle fries, and tender half chicken sizzle away from the kitchen, surrounded by tables of friends enjoying happy hour draughts. The space is constantly buzzing with lively conversation thanks to all the TVs showing sports, and you’ll have to lean in just to be heard over the cheerful chatter that fills the quaint interior.
Everything arrives perfectly cooked and flavorful, and the vibe gets more warm and welcoming as the evening goes on. Prepare to enjoy your fill of good food and great atmosphere.

$$$ | (619) 908-5058 | WEBSITE

Even on the busiest of evenings in Fashion Valley, you can follow the lively music to this American restaurant filled with tables of happy diners under the glow of poolside lights and the hum of the nearby bar area. Arlo is the kind of place where someone would celebrate a special occasion over filet mignon—or any other fantastic American dish on the menu.
Order the delicious ribeye and come prepared for the unforgettable Mac and cheese that’s creamy enough to be a comfort blanket, and the refreshing #EBOSpritz that brightens any meal. The service, with servers like Anthony bringing enthusiasm and great attitude, makes the experience thoroughly enjoyable, and the easy validated parking adds to the convenience that keeps customers returning.

Kettner Exchange is stylish dining perfected. The elegant Little Italy hotspot has standout dishes ranging from duck meatballs and salmon belly skewers to spicy shrimp and bone-in ribeye. Each plate arrives with flavors that are vibrant and dance on your tongue. The lively vibe of this place also keeps us coming back. You’re never left waiting here, for one, and servers deliver fresh desserts like budino and molten chocolate cake tableside.
The seafood is also fantastic, especially the slightly smoky halibut fish sandwich.
KINDRED
$$ | (619) 546-9653 | WEBSITE

You go to a vegan cafe for a quick smoothie. You go to a health food spot for a simple salad. This is where to embrace the dark side with friends, and order the charred greens on repeat. Complementing the meal are creative, tasty drinks—your table will feel like an edgy celebration before the impressive vegan dishes even arrive.
While the food is of course the main event, it’s nice to round out your experience with the cool vibe and fun ambiance, even if the loud metal music makes conversations a bit challenging.
Great Maple – Hillcrest
$$ | (619) 255-2282 | WEBSITE

The brunch at Great Maple is the best in the city, full stop. Everyone knows it, as evidenced by the locals and many, many diners that line up down the block for a table. The food is indulgent, with large portions and satisfying flavors, and will become the benchmark for every brunch you encounter in the future. You’re here for the fantastic Beef Brisket, but the luxury salmon toast and French toast logs should also be a priority.
JRDN Restaurant
$$$ | (858) 270-5736 | WEBSITE

The team at JRDN knows their way around the kitchen, so give everything at this beachfront spot your undivided attention. The sushi rolls are California-style with creative combinations, while the apple crisp is golden, warm, and fabulous. On top of great coastal dishes (and a lobster BLT you should pay attention to), this place also has a beach-chic aesthetic we love. Warm heaters, stunning ocean views, and a laid-back energy will make you grab a cocktail and linger.
The Balboa
$ | (619) 955-8525 | WEBSITE

This retro neighborhood bar in San Diego is the ideal spot for a casual night when you want to forget about dressing up. It’s a dark, windowless space, but not so dark that you’ll struggle to see your juicy burger. There are only a couple of standout options here: the popular Centennial Burger ($14), or the classic cheeseburger ($12).
We like grabbing a seat at the bar because you’ll get to experience the friendly atmosphere that sets this place apart, like chatting with the bartender known for excellent service while sipping a very reasonable Labatt Blue, or watching the game surrounded by regulars who make it feel homey.
