Somerville happens to be stacked with incredible American eateries, so there’s no excuse to be stuck on your couch next to a sad takeout container. Which is why, after extensive scientific analysis (eating a bunch of it all at once), we’ve compiled a list of our 19 favorite spots. From classic 100-year-old institutions to modern vegan bistros, here are all the places you need to be eating American food, ranked.
Reflections
$$ | (617) 628-1300 | WEBSITE

A quiet corner table overlooking the pool at Reflections perfectly captures what a comfortable hotel stay should feel like. While not every moment at this modern hotel will necessarily feel like a luxurious escape, each aspect of the experience will be polished and reliable in a good way. Nothing is overly fussy or impersonal, like the friendly staff who are genuinely accommodating without being intrusive.
Be prepared for some convenience overload—the Somerville location offers easy access to the T system from its airport-adjacent spot, connecting you to Boston’s attractions from museums to the Freedom Trail.
FIELD & VINE
$$$ | (617) 718-2333 | WEBSITE

Like many farm-to-table spots, FIELD & VINE offers a seasonal vegetable-focused menu. But here, the smaller plates shine with such vibrant flavor you’ll want to savor each bite like a rare wine you discovered by accident. There are only a few standout dishes—ceviche, cornbread, cavatelli, oeufs mayonnaise, and pommes—that you can enjoy solo, or as part of a progression with the incredible wine list recommendations.
Seating can be tight with occasional hiccups, but there’s a high probability you’ll want to linger anyway in this beautiful, relaxed yet sophisticated space with its plants, green door, and open kitchen fire.
Mama Ana Latin-Brazilian Cuisine (Style Café)
$ | (617) 623-0057 | WEBSITE

There are a few Latin-Brazilian spots in Somerville, but the one we really like is Mama Ana. It has a charming café style, the staff is friendly, and they have excellent breakfast all day and Brazilian plates. The food here is very flavorful, and ideal for when you want a meal that tastes authentic because not everyone wants their dining to be overly complicated or fussy.
Our favorite is the breakfast tacos, which taste fresh and satisfying in the best way, and the Colombian breakfast, which is hearty and delicious with little bits of authentic preparation that we really enjoy.
Elm Street Taproom
$$ | (617) 764-4965 | WEBSITE

Does a dog-friendly patio make a restaurant better? Not necessarily, but it certainly adds to the charm, as proven by Elm Street Taproom in Somerville. This restaurant and bar’s extensive beer selection is a solid foundation for their lively yet comfortable atmosphere, especially with standout dishes like the mac smash burger. But one of the best things here is their brunch crunch wrap.
It has a satisfying crunch, and manages to stay deliciously warm no matter how much you’re enjoying the lively weekend vibe and friendly, attentive service.
Shake Shack Assembly Row
$ | (617) 604-3025 | WEBSITE

As your friend who only eats artisanal burgers constantly reminds you, fast-casual dining is soulless and “way worse than proper restaurants.” That person is pretentious, but occasionally wrong, and Shake Shack Assembly Row proves their theory. The cheeseburgers here have an unbelievably satisfying juiciness, and the classic menu, like custard ice cream brimming with creamy richness, crispy crinkle-cut fries, and perfectly melted cheese, makes us smile with contentment.
It’s a clean, spacious restaurant with plenty of room for families, and there’s a convenient train station nearby for you to visit without parking hassles while the kids play happily.
PJ Ryan’s
$$ | (617) 625-8200 | WEBSITE

PJ Ryan’s has been around for decades and feels like it. And does PJ Ryan’s have the best wings in Somerville? No (although the wings are still really good). What it does have is the best pub experience. Including the cozy atmosphere that comes with warm lighting, or the standard bar seating with solid drinks on tap and decent prices on the side. And if you don’t want to eat inside the pub, you can still get your food to go. Except maybe the full experience—unless you bring your appetite.
Sound Bites Cafe
$ | (617) 623-8338 | WEBSITE

Sound Bites Cafe has some of our favorite breakfast in Somerville. It’s incredibly fast, and there are a variety of popular items, like pancakes, breakfast burritos, and omelettes (our absolute favorite is the Nova Scotia salmon benedict). Just keep in mind that since the atmosphere is fun and lively, it can get loud when busy, so sitting outside is recommended on nice days.
Daddy Jones
$$ | (617) 690-9095 | WEBSITE

Greek cuisine can be traditional and inventive, and it often involves both gyros and cocktails. The same could be said of the Athena burger at Daddy Jones in Somerville, which is exactly what it sounds like, i.e., a juicy burger served with a generous portion of fries that you’re going to want to pair with one of their creative seasonal drinks. It’s delicious, and although you may briefly wonder what it will do to your wallet, you also won’t care.
Orleans Restaurant
$$ | (617) 591-2100 | WEBSITE

This classic Somerville sports pub has been a local favorite for years. It definitely gets points for atmosphere, but at the end of the day, you come here for one thing: the phenomenal Cajun Jambalaya. It’s made with spicy sausage, tender chicken, and plump shrimp simmered in a rich tomato sauce over rice. While this may not be the dish you’d order on your own, somehow all the flavors work perfectly together.
The generous portion makes it worth the $24 price tag, and the chill pub vibe with exposed brick walls and sports memorabilia creates the perfect backdrop. On Mondays, they feature an oyster special with large, fresh Wellfleet oysters that are absolutely worth trying. The duck confit Baos are also delicious—soft steamed buns filled with crispy duck and hoisin sauce. Though the fish and chips are quite expensive at $28, they’re generously portioned and perfectly fried.
The staff remains courteous and helpful throughout, even when the place gets lively during weeknight events. While the iced coffee was disappointing, the tomato soup and grilled cheese make for a comforting $14 lunch. Overall, Orleans Restaurant delivers exactly what you want from a Boston pub: solid food, good vibes, and that welcoming environment that keeps you coming back.
Tall Order
$$ | (857) 214-0678 | WEBSITE

A cozy spot in Somerville with fantastic gluten-free options, which we understand is not always easy to find. But this is your go-to move when you need a break from restrictive dining or just a satisfying meal with thoughtful alternatives. All the dishes are good, but the standout here is the fried chicken sandwich. It’s the ideal mix of crispy and juicy, with a flavorful preparation adding depth.
The bar offers excellent service and skilled bartenders, with whiskies, tequilas, and digestifs at reasonable prices. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with a cozy back patio perfect for casual gatherings. Tall Order provides great service, delicious food, and good drinks, making it a place to come back to.
Boston Burger Company – Davis Square
$$ | (617) 440-7361 | WEBSITE

When Boston Burger Company first arrived in Davis Square, we were skeptical of the massive menu with burgers like the Wicked Hot, Alpine, and buffalo burger. What was in the hotmess sauce? What if we ordered the wrong one? Should we try three different burgers just in case? Yes, but only because every burger is consistently satisfying. Like the Alpine: a hefty patty with melty cheese and savory toppings. It’s indulgent, flavorful, and f*cking flawless.
In other words, this place has really grown on us—because we keep coming back.
Tony C’s Sports Bar and Grill
$$ | (617) 666-8282 | WEBSITE

Tony C’s serves burgers and sandwiches that are made fresh daily. It’s usually a lot busier than the other sports bars on this list, and the interior isn’t quite as polished—but they have huge screens for watching games, and the food is hearty and satisfying. Get the grilled chicken bruschetta sandwich: grilled chicken topped with fresh bruschetta on a toasted bun. Then, plan to make room in your fridge for all the beers on tap you’ll be trying before the game ends.
La Brasa
$$$ | (617) 764-1412 | WEBSITE

Tucked away in Somerville, it’s easy to dismiss La Brasa as just another trendy spot. Partly because it is—the cozy space with its high-end cabin feel and murals draws a steady crowd. Plus it’s featured on those ‘best of’ lists. But their thoughtfully crafted Mexican dishes are, in fact, exceptional. Maybe it’s the appeal of standout items like the Iberian pork collar or the Caesar salad with tortilla crumbs and queso fresco, or how the La Brasa Burger is half price on Mondays.
But it’s mostly just because the food is authentic and flavorful, with the wood-grilled chicken and street corn (elotes) being particular highlights. The friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff and allergen-marked menus make it welcoming, even if the brunch didn’t quite hit the mark. At around $50 per person, it’s a worthwhile splurge.
Lucky Strike Somerville
$$$ | (857) 997-8000 | WEBSITE

Lucky Strike Somerville is a lively entertainment hub in Somerville that offers bowling alleys and electronic games for families and friends. The arcade games are fantastic, especially for younger guests, and the bowling is a classic crowd-pleaser. While the prices may be considered high by some, the stunning views and extensive beer selection make it a worthwhile destination.
The service is described as average, and some reviews note that the food may lack in taste and freshness, with cold dishes being served. However, the overall experience is enjoyable, particularly for celebrations and gatherings. Despite the mixed reviews, Lucky Strike Somerville remains a popular choice for those seeking a fun-filled day or evening out.
City Slicker Cafe
$ | (617) 625-0700 | WEBSITE

This spot in Somerville (it’s become a go-to for many) has incredibly crispy pizza crust, gourmet pies, an excellent Cubano sandwich, and pot roast entrée. The toppings vary, but you’ll find delicious varieties that take the cheese all the way to the edge with a nice crispy bottom. And one of our favorite things here is the caramelized crust—your choice of reasonably priced pizza that’s a big hit every time for parties.
Supreme Kitchen
$ | (617) 628-4440 | WEBSITE

It’s easy to miss the unassuming storefront of Supreme Kitchen—and you really shouldn’t, because the comfort food at this little cash-only spot in Somerville is fantastic. Choose between hearty burgers, generous sandwiches, classic meatloaf plates, a “kitchen special” (their take on a loaded breakfast skillet), some American diner staples involving mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans, and daily specials in traditional and rotating options.
The meatloaf with a side of creamy mac and cheese is a great pick, but no matter what you order, expect a portion that’s perfectly satisfying and full of flavor, without breaking the bank.
Salt + Stone
$$ | (617) 764-1541 | WEBSITE

Salt + Stone is a great spot for special occasions or casual gatherings, but where it really excels is cocktails. Yes, with some dishes running $30-plus, it’s on the pricier side, but you’re paying for expertly crafted drinks like the best blood orange mimosa and signature Vesper martini. Food and general lively atmosphere vary a bit during busy times—we suggest trying the popular Rigatoni Bolognese with warm burrata or Baked Brie to decide which is your favorite.
Saloon
$$ | (617) 628-4444 | WEBSITE

Saloon is a speakeasy-style restaurant and cocktail bar in Somerville, and we’re glad it’s here, since the cocktails are outstanding. They’re inventive and expertly crafted, plus everything is made with premium spirits. And while you can find craft cocktails all over the place nowadays, Saloon is where you can experience their inspired cocktail menu in an upscale atmosphere.
The staple drinks (like the Old Fashioned) are very good, but we like the inventive ones best, created by bartenders who know how to balance flavors perfectly. The ambiance is enhanced by heavy wood paneling, giving it a sober and sophisticated feel, especially in the bar area. Popular dishes include truffled mushroom toast, roasted octopus, and a delicious burger. The service is attentive and friendly, creating a memorable experience.
Although parking can be challenging and it’s on the pricier side, the unique experience and high-quality food and drinks make it worthwhile. Recommended for those who enjoy cocktail bars and old school hip hop music, Saloon is also a great venue for special events.
Highland Kitchen
$$ | (617) 625-1131 | WEBSITE

Highland Kitchen in Somerville makes fantastic food, with creative dishes that are interesting without seeming like they’re trying too hard—like the Vegetable Madras (which is described as “bomb”), the Goat Stew that’s a favorite among regulars, or the Dirty Mango Lassi, a sweet and tasty beverage with a hint of rum. And though cozy restaurants can sometimes have an issue with wait times, you won’t find that here—the service is attentive and the atmosphere is welcoming.
