Burgers, steaks, loaded fries—bar & grill classics are by far the most satisfying, and that includes San Diego’s vibrant scene. You might know these spots as the go-to for game day or a casual night out. If you’d prefer to savor all your grilled favorites with a cold craft beer in hand, you can do so at one of these top-rated establishments. From upscale gastropubs to classic neighborhood joints, this list has your next destination.
Offshore Tavern & Grill
$ | (619) 276-2253 | WEBSITE

Offshore Tavern & Grill is wonderful, but a meal there costs more than a round-trip flight to Miami. If you need something more practical, Offshore is the perfect alternative. It’s in a great spot in SoCLMT/Bay Park, a cozy little pub perfect for race days if you’re an F1 fan. The setup is low key and casual, with good music in the background and a down-to-earth clientele.
The brief menu is centered around pub fare with fantastic brunch options, like the BLT and delicious tacos, especially the fried shrimp one. Get a plate starting at $18, or just choose a few, like the tasty poke bowl and the Johnson sandwich. The staff, including Doug and Dan, are exceptional, welcoming everyone and providing fantastic service. Server Skye is noted for being friendly, attentive, and genuine.
The Balboa
$ | (619) 955-8525 | WEBSITE

If all you want is a solid, no-fuss burger for under $15, The Balboa will hit the spot. As a rule of thumb, the simplest burgers are the best things here, with a couple exceptions, like the popular Centennial Burger. The dark, windowless San Diego space feels exactly like the kind of retro dive bar that mostly just exists in neighborhood lore, and the friendly staff, including a bartender known for excellent service, adds to the charm.
Bullpen
$ | (858) 503-6786 | WEBSITE

Bullpen in San Diego is modeled after the classic American sports bars, where you can catch a game and enjoy a hearty meal for a relatively affordable price. There are actually plenty of seats inside this bustling bar—and a bit of a rush to get the prime rib special—but once the dining commences, you can still have a satisfying experience in under an hour. The staff moves quickly through orders of burgers, wings, and the famous prime rib, with main dish prices ranging from $16-$32.
Bullpen’s prime rib special on Wednesday nights rivals those at more upscale steakhouses, and you can also add some classic bar sides like fries, onion rings, and loaded nachos for an extra charge.
The High Dive
$$ | (619) 275-0460 | WEBSITE

If you’re not looking to spend a fortune at some trendy downtown spot, you can get the same satisfying bar food and lively atmosphere at The High Dive in the neighborhood. The High Dive is a walk-in, family-friendly dive bar that serves dishes that range from $8-$18 for options like gorgonzola cheese fries and fish tacos, with daily specials available.
(There’s also a popular breakfast menu in the mornings.) Casually dropping in for some wings and a beer here feels like adding a perfect Sunday to your week.
Tequilla Bar & Grille
$$ | (619) 234-1500 | WEBSITE

This cozy bar and grill in San Diego offers some of the best food in town. The margaritas are delicious, the bartenders are attentive, and the ambiance is especially inviting by the outdoor fire pit. While the tacos had hard shells, the staff is hardworking and the overall experience is satisfying. A suggestion was made for more durable menus, but the value remains solid with margaritas around $12-15 and tacos priced at $4-6 each.
Our favorites include the classic carne asada taco and the refreshing house margarita with a salted rim.
Bare Back Grill
$$ | (858) 274-7117 | WEBSITE

Bare Back Grill isn’t trying to be fancy or complicated, and we find that kind of refreshing. The focus at this beachside spot in Mission Beach is on quality burgers, really good fries, and crispy textures. Unlike some other bar and grill restaurants, you order a la carte here rather than committing to a full prix fixe situation. You can also enjoy everything with their hard kombucha—but the smash burger and fries are really the move here. Eat them quickly, so the fries stay super crispy.
Wonderland Ocean Pub
$$ | (619) 255-3358 | WEBSITE

Wonderland Ocean Pub believes their stunning ocean views and lively coastal atmosphere should be enjoyed with a drink in hand, and they’ve made it very easy to do so at their pier-side bar and grill. The spacious open-air setting has plenty of seating, where you’ll choose from menu items like the huge tuna wrap with lightly seared ahi or the perfectly cooked grilled fish taco to be delivered to you by their friendly, accommodating staff.
There’s plenty of room to guarantee you a spot whether you want to pop in for a quick solo meal after the beach or linger for rounds of drinks while watching surfers and waves from your optimal seat.
The Smoking Gun SD
$$ | (619) 233-3836 | WEBSITE

If you’re accustomed to the typical crowded bar scene around San Diego, the straightforward, no-fuss experience at The Smoking Gun SD might seem to be missing its usual costume. But that won’t matter once you taste the way the pickle-brined chicken nugs, crispy buttermilk batter, and hot-from-the-kitchen chili come together at this fun spot with arcade games and pool tables.
You can go with the exceptional Chimichurri skewers or order the butter burger if you have your heart set on trying the wings with Cali green sauce.
The Tilted Stick Bar & Grill
$ | (619) 684-0089 | WEBSITE

This local sports bar in San Diego offers a dive bar experience that feels simple but delivers on all the essentials. Think great burgers, strong drinks, and friendly bartenders who keep the cold beer flowing. They serve classic bar food like wings and fish tacos, plus what they call the best burger deal in town. For San Diego standards, the prices are pretty reasonable—especially compared to the overpriced spots downtown.
This bar may be too casual for a fancy celebration, but its welcoming atmosphere with a large outdoor smoking area is perfect for watching a game or hanging out with friends. And if you do want to splurge a little, they have strong drinks that won’t break the bank.
South Beach Bar & Grille
$ | (619) 226-4577 | WEBSITE

Most of the beachside spots in San Diego do their best work when they keep things simple, but the best dishes at South Beach Bar & Grille are the more straightforward ones. The famous fish tacos and the Mahi Mahi tacos deliver exactly what you want from a casual oceanfront meal, and we love the touch of freshness in the shrimp tacos.
The outdoor patio with its stunning pier views and the energetic, people-watching atmosphere make South Beach feel like a perfect local hangout, though not quite fancy enough for a special occasion. Instead, come through for a laid-back lunch or sunset dinner that calls for a small splurge, like spending the extra few dollars to enjoy the Friday dollar oyster special or the Tuesday taco and drink deals.
