This year, we’ve devoured more smoky meats than we can count. But certain barbeque joints left an indelible mark—like ribs that fall off the bone, brisket that redefines tenderness, and a pulled pork sandwich worth writing home about. Of the countless plates we sampled across Almada, these 14 spots stand out. Make it your mission in 2026 to savor every single one.
O Mirrita

It seems like every Portuguese restaurant has sardines on the menu these days, and most of the time, they’re nothing remarkable. But the grilled sardines at O Mirrita are a major exception. They’re fresh like they just came off the boat, not too fishy, and pack a smokiness that will have you picking at the bones long after you’re full. On the side, crisp potatoes and a simple green salad add a welcome freshness and cut through all that richness with surgical precision.
Of all the hearty, authentic Portuguese dishes at O Mirrita, this is one we nearly ordered a second round of before we even finished the first.
Churrasqueira O Farnel

This welcoming Portuguese spot in Almada doesn’t shy away from classic breakfast staples—just consider their bread with chorizo or perfectly flaky custard tart, served alongside a refreshing compal. But the most compelling reason to visit Churrasqueira O Farnel is the meat board. Arranged with care, featuring tender cuts and smoky flavors, the generous platter shines like a centerpiece at a family gathering.
There’s a side of their signature piripiri sauce for dipping, but the meats are so richly seasoned it’s almost an afterthought. Like everything here, it’s a comforting tradition made to feel effortlessly inviting.
O Novo Cais

The discovery of O Novo Cais in Almada was one of the year’s delightful surprises. And while we love the cozy, unpretentious space—with its warm, welcoming atmosphere and accessible ground-floor layout—the thing that keeps us dreaming about a return visit is the seafood platter. Featuring fresh oysters, succulent prawns, and other ocean treasures, this generous offering is a pinnacle of Portuguese seafood and proof that more is more when it comes to flavor.
The friendly, quick service and the exquisite seafood rice only add to the experience, making every bite worth the very reasonable price.
Cova Funda

Getting to Cova Funda in Almada requires a short ferry ride and a bit of planning—two things many visitors overlook when craving authentic Portuguese food. But once you step inside this charming mom-and-pop spot, don’t waste precious time overthinking the menu: just ask for the seafood special. The flavors in these fresh, perfectly prepared dishes are like a well-choreographed coastal dance: there’s a lot happening, but it’s one harmonious, delightful experience.
There’s a briny sweetness from the just-caught fish, a savory depth from the traditional seasonings, a bright acidity from the lemon garnish, and a richness from the olive oil that coats every bite beautifully.
Carlos dos Frangos

The Almada waterfront sunset, the scent of charcoal in the air, and the first bite of perfectly roasted chicken—these are some of our fondest memories of Portugal. Another instant highlight was when our server at Carlos dos Frangos presented this whole roasted piglet to our table. Crispy skin glistening with seasoning, it felt like being handed a culinary treasure with the power to satisfy the deepest cravings.
The staff at this traditional barbecue spot eventually carved it up, revealing juicy, falling-off-the-bone meat and a center filled with smoky flavor that solved our most pressing issue (being hungry). The $42 price tag is reasonable for the feast, but even if you share it with friends, you’ll definitely have leftovers.
Casa Horácio

With places like O Pitéu, Tasca do Chico, and A Tasquinha, Almada has an abundance of spots that serve excellent traditional Portuguese food across lots of different styles. We think it’s time to add the version at Casa Horácio to that all-star lineup. This authentic Portuguese restaurant in Almada makes a kind of meal you eat on a Tuesday, dream about all week, and then have again on Saturday because your body can’t go any longer without it.
The fresh, traditional cuisine is phenomenal and comforting, and simple, authentic dishes deliver intense flavors as you eat. Quick, kind service ties it all together—it’s so welcoming that feeling like a local is an automatic activity.
Churrasqueira Grelha Mista

As you wait for a table at Churrasqueira Grelha Mista, a bustling barbecue spot in Almada, you might overhear a regular say, “I’ll be devastated if they run out of the charcoal-grilled ribs.” If that’s not a sign to order them, we don’t know what is. These tender, smoky ribs come with a side of crispy potatoes and a tangy house sauce, grilled until their edges develop a delicious char.
Every meal comes with baskets of warm bread and fresh salads—dip a piece into the sauce and watch the flavors meld together perfectly.
Pérola do Cristo Rei

We’re big fans of traditional Portuguese spots, but traditional spots with food you’d cross the bridge from Lisbon for? Count us in. This welcoming Almada restaurant is a great place for a relaxed dinner, but it’s the food that made us instant devotees—particularly the grilled squid. A generous portion of perfectly charred squid is something we’ve seen before, but Pérola do Cristo Rei proves it’s done best with impeccable freshness and expert preparation.
Add in the restaurant’s friendly service, moderate prices starting around €13, and generous portions—all in a warm, inviting atmosphere—and you’ve got yourself a memorable, satisfying experience.
Escondidinho de Cacilhas

Seeing a whole octopus tentacle splayed across your plate might be a little intimidating, but any hesitation will vanish the moment you taste this perfectly grilled seafood. The octopus has a smoky charred exterior, the olive oil adds richness and extra flavor, and the fresh lemon and parsley brighten the whole thing up like sunshine breaking through Lisbon’s morning fog.
The only thing that improves this dish is fully utilizing the restaurant’s grilled sardines and pairing them with a crisp glass of vinho verde from their affordable wine selection.
Churrasqueira O Papo Cheio

Portuguese barbecue has always had its champions in Almada, with spots like A Valenciana drawing steady crowds for years. But none of them nail roast chicken quite like Churrasqueira O Papo Cheio, a Portuguese gem that’s been serving locals for decades. The roast chicken comes out golden and glistening, but the meat beneath is undeniably the best part. The juicy, herb-rubbed pieces fall off the bone, crispy on the outside, tender within, and flavored with generous amounts of garlic and lemon.
Just keep in mind that each bird requires careful preparation, so be sure to order it early if you’re not on Portuguese time. The octopus dish is another standout—tender, smoky, and easily one of the best I’ve tried. Despite the language barrier, the owner’s attentive service makes everything flow smoothly, and at just 10 euros for a bottle of wine, the value is as remarkable as the food.
Chamó Frango

Chamó Frango is no stranger to viral barbecue. Their cartoonishly juicy chicken basically broke Almada’s internet in 2023 when the restaurant originally popped up at a local food market. These days, they’re cooking at a shiny new space in the city center, and while the chicken is still on the menu—and still delicious—it’s no longer the only star.
That award goes to the varied side dishes: potatoes are tossed in a creamy, bright-yellow sauce and topped with a giant dollop of garlic butter and a pool of herb oil. It’s savory, rich, and herbaceous, with just the tiniest kick of paprika at the end. And it’s one of the best barbecues you can eat in Almada at the moment.
KSM Pizzeria

When was the last time you ate something that felt like a genuine roadside discovery? Chances are, it’s been a while. Consider this your cue to experience the skewered meat at KSM Pizzeria, a cozy and charming spot along the side of the road in Almada. Cooked over an open fire, the tender meat arrives with a simple salad and crisp chips, smelling of smoky char with a hint of savory seasoning.
The friendly staff explains the care behind the dish while they serve it: an emphasis on 100% Halal ingredients and impeccable service. Their approach blends straightforward preparation with fantastic views and a unique atmosphere, to create something wholly satisfying and deeply memorable.
Churrasqueira Grelha Alentejana

Hot take: Most grilled chicken (even the good kind) tends to taste pretty similar. But after our first bite of the one at Churrasqueira Grelha Alentejana, we knew it was special. There isn’t anything wild going on—just perfectly seasoned chicken, expertly grilled over charcoal, served with simple sides. But the simple, high-quality preparation cooked with just the right technique is what makes this chicken so delicious.
If you’re ever in need of a perfect little grilled meal to get your week started right, drive to this Charneca and Costa da Caparica spot.
A Rampa do Pragal

The grilled sardines are the signature dish at A Rampa do Pragal, a welcoming Portuguese seafood spot near Cristo Rei, and you should treat them as essential. This $14 plate delivers a genuine moment of delight where we feel like we’ve discovered something truly authentic. Each fresh fillet is grilled over open flames until charred, then simply dressed with olive oil and sea salt. The result is flaky flesh that’s so moist, we thought it was steamed first.
It’s been the cornerstone of the menu at A Rampa do Pragal since they opened, and we hope it never changes.
