18 Best Bars Restaurants in Traverse City, MI [2026 Updated]

Traverse City is one of those Great Lakes destinations (hello, Mackinac Island and Door County) where your immediate assumption is tourist traps, overpriced cocktails, and a hefty tab wherever you raise a glass. That last bit might hold true at some spots along Front Street—you’ll certainly find plenty of bars where they charge $18 for a garnish-heavy cocktail—but there are also loads of genuinely excellent, reasonably-priced gems too.

The Little Fleet

$ | (231) 943-1116 | WEBSITE

The Little Fleet

This downtown venue prides itself on casual vibrancy that could seem chaotic if the rotating food trucks weren’t so consistently satisfying. The space has an open, convivial feel and it’s hard not to settle in from the very first sip of a crisp local draft. Flavors at The Little Fleet don’t whisper—they announce themselves like live music with a craving for street food and community.

The move is to grab some smaller bites at one of the large communal tables, and go for whatever the pop-up kitchen is serving that night with friends. Just try not to think about how many rounds you’ve ordered.

Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant & Brewery

$$ | (231) 223-4333 | WEBSITE

Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant & Brewery

This brewery restaurant is set on beautiful grounds with stunning lakeside views and a fascinating ghost story to explore. The pumpkin dessert is our favourite and the moreish truffle fries are the perfect thing to pair with the Jolly Pumpkin beers. In the evening, the spooky yet cozy space has serious date night vibes, so try to get a window table and settle in until closing.

Taproot Cider House

$$ | (231) 943-2500 | WEBSITE

Taproot Cider House

Taproot Cider House is unapologetically cozy. Big flavors, big heart, big farm-to-table energy. This American spot is warm with people chatting over ciders in all the wooden surfaces and the less-is-more space. Some of the ciders are hit and miss, so our go-to is the fresh local apple blend for two. But the inviting interiors and pet-friendly patio seats warmed by string lights are a not-so-subtle hint that you’re not really here for the drama—it’s a farm-sourced spot, after all.

Just make sure you don’t leave without trying the peas and carrots with peanut sauce.

Opa! Grill & Taproom

$ | (231) 947-6721 | WEBSITE

Opa! Grill & Taproom

We get misty-eyed whenever we think about this comfortable Greek spot on the outskirts of Traverse City. The mellow atmosphere and well-maintained furniture make it inviting enough that we’d probably forgive a long-lost friend if they treated us to dinner here. The open layout of Opa! Grill & Taproom teeters into ‘accidentally sharing your truffle fries with the next table’ territory, which is fine if you’re in a group.

But if you’re hoping to savor some authentic gyro over freshly baked flatbread, head there early to snag a seat in the convenient hidden gem section near the large parking lot.

Barrio Traverse City

$ | (231) 421-1855 | WEBSITE

Barrio Traverse City

Tucked into a vibrant space with lighting that makes every taco look 20% more delicious, Barrio Traverse City is undeniably fun. People would come here for casual group dinners or lively date nights even if the guacamole was bland, but fortunately the Mexican food is excellent. Bacon Habanero guacamole with perfectly balanced heat and creamy buffalo chicken queso start every meal off strongly.

And mains—build-your-own tacos with fresh ingredients, and the standout el jefe tacos—do a good job of maintaining that high.

Minervas Restaurant & Bar

$ | (231) 946-5093 | WEBSITE

Minervas Restaurant & Bar

Minervas Restaurant & Bar is a compelling reason to venture into Traverse City’s dining scene. The clean, quiet space doesn’t have abundant seating for large groups, but the attentive service and standout dishes make it a worthwhile destination. And it’s worth it for some of the best comfort food in town. The black and blue is cooked to perfection, and the potato soup remains a standout favorite—our go-to is the prima potato soup.

The Filling Station Microbrewery

$ | (231) 946-8168 | WEBSITE

The Filling Station Microbrewery

The Filling Station Microbrewery in Traverse City is a woodfired institution where the flour-dusted tables can bring back all kinds of memories. The compact pizza menu is legendary for good reason. It ranges from the familiar (the Stoker, say) to the fancy (the Burlington Northern with pears and prosciutto), so don’t be surprised that it can easily add up to craft brewery prices. That said, it’s worth it for a special meal centered around the seasonal specials like the St. Patty’s Day pie.

Beacon Lounge

$ | (231) 946-5000 | WEBSITE

Beacon Lounge

Arguably Traverse City’s most revered sunset spot, Beacon Lounge’s intimate location serves dinky, delicious small plates that are best enjoyed with a drink that’s never left dry. There’s something about this version of Beacon Lounge, smack bang overlooking the bay, that screams sunset sipping and snacking.

Like all Beacon Lounge spaces, it’s cozy and classic, with their innately personable bartenders like Cody and Josh gliding around the small bar area and the few tables, always with a firecracker shrimp or margarita pizza in hand.

Sleder’s Family Tavern

$ | (231) 947-9213 | WEBSITE

Sleder

The Impossible burger at Sleder’s is a thing of grilled-onion-bun wonder. It’s a classic take on tavern fare, involving a foundation of juicy plant-based patty, layers of crisp lettuce and tomato, and served with—insert nostalgic sigh here—hand-cut fries. It is undoubtedly the standout dish at this historic family tavern, but the homemade ham and bean soup, club sandwich, and cherry BBQ sauce are all instant crowd-pleasers too.

Lil Bo Bar and Restaurant

$ | (231) 421-3100 | WEBSITE

Lil Bo Bar and Restaurant

This charming local spot feels ready to be featured in a vintage travel guide, and the cozy interior is full of regulars sipping on those delicious bloody marys. Beyond the train tables and vintage stirrers, Lil Bo has a menu full of comforting classics with creative twists: the standout Garden Gnome comes shining with fresh vegetables and brilliant pimento cheese. This is Traverse City, so invention is paired with familiarity, like the knock-out Pepaponi sandwich served with waffle fries.

It’s a dish that’s worth a visit alone.

North Bar

$ | (231) 421-1016 | WEBSITE

North Bar

More elevated than your typical downtown spot—with a rooftop setup for those clear Michigan nights—North Bar in Traverse City offers some of the best bar dining in the area. Things like the Asian Tuna Salad are reliably excellent, and you should get involved in their rotating seasonal cocktails. The drinks are creative and the service is one attentive experience we endorse.

Set with that rooftop bar, there’s a vibrant, lively, slightly energetic-feeling space upstairs, and a more relaxed main level with great ambiance and friendly staff.

Traverse Tall Ship Company

$$ | (231) 941-2000 | WEBSITE

Traverse Tall Ship Company

The classic of classic cruise experiences, this schooner-based company will accommodate any guest you bring. You’ve got familiar favorites like sunset tours, multiple-day adventures, the Nibi cruise with indigenous storytelling, and all manner of sailing options to consider on the schedule. We like to keep things relaxed with the afternoon Moomer’s ice cream sail, a family-friendly outing that’s smooth even on windy days.

Aboard it’s a mix between a tour boat, an educational venue, and a kind of floating nature sanctuary. There are various deck spaces plus some accessible areas for wheelchairs, and it’s well-organized for groups.

Apache Trout Grill

$$ | (231) 947-7079 | WEBSITE

Apache Trout Grill

At this waterfront dining destination, floor-to-ceiling windows and polished wood transport you to the shores of Grand Traverse Bay. There’s a flickering candle on each table, a guitarist plays acoustic covers, and diners fill the airy, elegant dining room, dipping flaky whitefish into rich lobster bisque, and getting indulgent with a cherry-heavy salad topped with candied pecans. If you’re only ordering one dish, it should be the enormous whitefish with its perfectly crispy skin.

Chili’s Grill & Bar

$$ | (231) 929-0200 | WEBSITE

Chili

Chili’s Grill & Bar is a bustling, clean establishment where the manager greets guests warmly, and servers hustle between tables, sometimes disappearing for long stretches before returning with perfectly cooked 10 oz sirloins alongside fries and broccoli. Patrons crowd around the bar, sipping delicious drinks and digging into gluten-free options, chatting over meals while the vibe hums with a mix of bar energy and restaurant comfort.

Although the service can feel bare minimum when staff seem occupied elsewhere, the overall experience hits right when you catch an awesome server on a good night, making it a decent spot for a casual hangout with friends.

Paradise Cove Bar & Grill (South End Tiki)

$ | (231) 492-5281 | WEBSITE

Paradise Cove Bar & Grill (South End Tiki)

Lots of places serve tacos by the water, but that doesn’t mean they get it right. Paradise Cove Bar & Grill is one of Traverse City’s legendary tiki spots that does. The walleye tacos are so fresh they taste like the lake, the chicken tacos are juicy and flavorful, and the shrimp cocktail is chilled—as it should be—rather than lukewarm. A classic.

7 Monks Taproom

$ | (231) 421-8410 | WEBSITE

7 Monks Taproom

No taproom in Traverse City sums up the area better than 7 Monks. It’s an absolutely delicious, surprisingly affordable craft beer destination that appears to be casual, and really is. It’s the sibling to upscale dining spots, but more beer-focused. The bacon jam burger is excellent, as are the Brussels and fried mozzarella, but just be aware that things can get crowded here. Come for a casual night out or even better, when you’re not in a hurry.

Archie’s Social House

$ | (231) 421-1900 | WEBSITE

Archie

Archie’s Social House is one of those neighborhood gems you want everyone to discover. Ideally while sharing generous portions with a close friend and sipping just the right number of house mix Bloody Marys. Hint: enough that you get a little Instagram foodie over all the elevated brunch items, not so many that you try to chat up the short rib nachos.

Don’t write this place off as just a quaint dining spot though—the food is excellent, the service is friendly, and if it’s on, splitting the smoked salmon Benedict is a must if you’re rolling with a group.

Bubba’s

$ | (231) 995-0570 | WEBSITE

Bubba

Given our love of hearty burgers and trips to the local brewery, our favourite acronym is BYOB. Bringing your own beer is exactly what you can do at this burger joint tucked away in Traverse City, which makes this place perfect for an affordable night out where you can still get joyously full. But even without all that, it also serves truly enormous burgers, crispy Cajun pickle fries, and fluffy sweet potato tots that yes, you absolutely should dip in the house sauce.
