Here you could make a drinking game out of how many times the words ‘poke bowl’ and ‘black bean burger’ appear on the menu. The portions are huge, the views are stunning, and restraint doesn’t exist. Go big with the tuna poke bowl, loaded with fresh fish, avocado, and sesame seeds over rice. You might need to take a digestive stroll along the shoreline afterwards, but it’s worth it.

This spot is tucked away in West Haven, meaning you can park, walk in, and enjoy a solid burger meal without having to navigate some complicated downtown scene. Of course, if you’ve already been out and about, these burgers make a fine reward. Be sure to also get the crispy tater tots—they have a perfect crunch with a salty seasoning on the outside and lots of fluffy potato inside.
Harp’s Bar & Grille

The original Harp’s opened in West Haven back in the 1990s. While this is a more updated version, we’ve been known to stop in for a quick bite before catching some live music. Sure, sometimes the drinks can be a little watered down if you catch them on a busy night. But that friendly, lively atmosphere still lives up to the billing, even if the place is now synonymous with “neighborhood bar and grille.”
Oak Beach Bar + Grill

Whether the afternoon was spent cheering on the home team or braving the weekend crowds, chances are everyone needs a reliable and laid-back meal at Oak Beach Bar + Grill. The location may be near the water, but the welcoming, pub-style atmosphere and cozy booths are still the same—and so are those crunchy, moist fish & chips. Someone will have to pry us away before they ever run out of them.
RipTide Restaurant & Bar

West Haven is so bustling that some visitors don’t even realize there’s a fantastic seafood spot tucked away in a shopping plaza. You’ll find this restaurant offering great food and service in a bright and sunny atmosphere with a nice view of the water. In particular, we love their lemon pepper grouper, lobster roll, and lobster bisque (a creamy, rich soup that’s a highlight of the menu).
The fried oysters, served with French fries and coleslaw, are well-liked, though some find the fries a bit disappointing due to being overly crispy and oily. The view from the covered patio of Oyster River Beach adds to the overall experience, allowing guests to enjoy a scenic glimpse of the Sound. The waitstaff can be a bit chaotic during peak hours, but service, especially from the owner, is often described as friendly and amazing.
Parking can be tricky, but the restaurant is conveniently located. Overall, RipTide is a fantastic spot for a meal, with many customers looking forward to returning for its great food, friendly staff, and lovely views.
JR’s Place

West Haven has plenty of bars where you can grab a drink. But the only one worth your time is JR’s Place, where the bartender Terra serves up that Strawberry Henny she’s famous for. Is JR’s technically a fine dining establishment? No. But they do offer a mellow atmosphere with good music, perfect for enjoying their delicious wings and mozzarella sticks that provide immediate comfort after you’ve spent an hour trying to find parking downtown.
Scoreboards Cafe

Every sports fan in West Haven breathed a sigh of relief when Scoreboards Cafe opened, offering the neighborhood’s most reliable spot to unwind. The comfortable space fills up quickly, with friends shooting pool, coworkers grabbing drinks after hours, and regulars settling in at the bar. Service might feel leisurely during peak times, but you’ll be thoroughly content once that muscle marinara mimosa arrives on the sunny patio.
US 1 Billiards & Bar

At this classic pool hall, green felt tables glow under enough bright lighting to make you feel like you’re watching a professional tournament. But instead of a spectator, you’ll be guided by the friendly staff through the many ways to enjoy Korean BBQ while sinking shots. The Korean rice bowls with BBQ, sides, and other options come in under $30 per person, which is a solid deal.
Out of all the menu items, the Korean BBQ is the one to focus on—it’s flavorful and satisfying like a home-cooked meal, but with the fun atmosphere of a night out.
744 West Bar & Grill

Everyone remembers where they were on two occasions: the day the Yale Bowl hosted its first game, and the day 744 West Bar & Grill opened in West Haven. Hordes of people continue to flood the parking lot to get here, ordering plates of prime rib and burgers in various combos. There may be splashier restaurants on the county map, but this place always hits the spot with its 16oz Prime Rib for $19.99, parmesan wings, and lively bar atmosphere.
