Most visitors flock to Huntington Beach for its iconic pier, surfing culture, and endless sunshine. But those in the know understand that beyond the waves lies a surprisingly robust culinary landscape, where the humble burger is elevated to an art form.
Grinderz
$ | (714) 895-2800 | WEBSITE

You could easily mistake Grinderz for just another burger joint, but it’s actually a vibrant spot with tasty burgers and sides made fresh daily, plus beer on tap and a limited drink selection. All burgers, turkey burgers, veggie burgers, and chicken options come with fresh ingredients, as do the crispy, handmade onion rings and absolutely amazing fries. The kitchen stays open until closing, but they do run out of popular items (which can also happen by early evening on busy weekends).
IHOP
$ | (714) 962-4400 | WEBSITE

After a long morning of errands, sometimes you just want something sweet, savory, and satisfying. Fortunately, IHOP is happy to meet that need, with varied breakfast options—you can’t go wrong with the New Nashville Hot Chicken Melt, or the Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity. You can find great value on the budget menu, and the rewards app offers convenient perks for families and couples alike.
You should also seriously consider ordering a perfectly cooked meal served by friendly staff like Luz, who provides attentive service from hostess to cashier, for an ideal weekend treat.
John’s Philly Grille (We close early if we run out of fresh baked bread)
$ | (714) 969-8755 | WEBSITE

While it’s tempting to devour John’s Philly Grille’s massive cheese steak sandwiches, try to save room for the garlic hot sauce: that tangy, spicy kick is the only way to elevate your meal here.
25 Degrees Huntington Beach
$$ | (714) 960-2525 | WEBSITE

When it comes to burger joints in Huntington Beach, greasy spoons and fast food are as common a pairing as surfboards and sunshine. While the area has plenty of options for a burger, there’s no need to go anywhere other than 25 Degrees.
They do classic items like the American Classic and BBQ Burger, with moist and delicious patties that always manage to hold plenty of toppings without falling apart, and every side is served fresh and flavorful, from the standout mashed potatoes to the tender wings.
Steve’s No. 4 Charbroil
$ | (714) 848-1422 | WEBSITE

Expect quick service, a clean interior, and a self-serve coffee station. Even though it’s always convenient and welcoming, Steve’s No. 4 Charbroil is one of the more family-friendly dining options in Huntington Beach, thanks to its ample room for kids and wheelchairs, complete with parking right in front.
Dairy Queen (Treat)
$ | (714) 840-7971 | WEBSITE

The shop is compact but most treats can be customized, if, for instance, you’d want the Heath Bar Blizzard’s perfect blend of toppings added to your classic Dilly Bar (which you absolutely should). For those willing to drop a few dollars on a nostalgic ice cream experience, you won’t need to plan ahead—but those of us outside the immediate area might need to time our visit to avoid the occasional busy periods with screaming kids and obnoxious teenagers.
Dog Haus
$ | (714) 894-4287 | WEBSITE

Burgers might not be the first thing you’d expect to find in a shopping center, but Dog Haus delivers some seriously satisfying comfort food. There’s always a standout burger on the menu (with options like classic cheeseburgers, spicy wings, and loaded fries), and a rotating special of the day. Maybe it’s just that the space includes games like cornhole and plenty of seating, but it feels more laid-back and social than most spots in Huntington Beach. The affordable-and-diverse menu helps, too.
Sea Salt at the Beach
$ | (714) 887-3369 | WEBSITE

It may be because of its prime beachfront location, but Sea Salt at the Beach is one of the best spots for simple, tasty food and drinks without the usual crowded Huntington Beach scene. It’s a great choice any day, but it’s especially enjoyable on Saturdays, thanks to free live music with a great stage and sound system overlooking the ocean beyond.
In-N-Out Burger
$ | (800) 786-1000 | WEBSITE

In-N-Out Burger is Huntington Beach’s long-standing fast-food staple, so if you’re looking to actually bring the flavor your beachside summer getaway demands, pull into the drive-thru here. The classic burger joint is tucked away in a decades-old building and serves some of the best burgers and American classics in the area. The DoubleDouble with its fresh ingredients and special sauce is a must-order, and the lettuce wrapped 4×4 is a decadent second or third burger.
When we say prepare for a wait, we mean it—they only take orders in person and should be approached with as much patience as possible.
Nightingale
$ | (714) 580-2939 | WEBSITE

Tucked away in the heart of Huntington Beach is Nightingale, a charming restaurant that’s been a local favorite since opening. The cozy spot offers a versatile menu blending Thai-inspired dishes with classic American comfort food, including options for different tastes. Head over for lunch or dinner to try their standout wagyu burger, flavorful crab fried rice, or the popular drunken noodle.
Expect a relaxed, Instagramable atmosphere with elegant decor, small tables, and occasional live violin music, plus friendly, attentive service that makes every visit feel special. Don’t miss their delicious strawberry lychee cocktail or the highly recommended lemonade.
Woody’s Diner
$ | (714) 848-9936 | WEBSITE

While Woody’s Diner may seem like any other classic American spot from the outside, the menu is actually one of the most generous in Huntington Beach. It’s comfort food-focused, with dishes ranging from cinnamon French toast to BBQ Chicken Sandwich and Surfer’s Sandwich stacked with fresh ingredients. Woody’s has both a retro interior and nostalgic vibe with warm lighting, which enhances the welcoming atmosphere and makes it a great destination for sharing big portions with a group.
Eat At Joe’s
$ | (714) 842-9440 | WEBSITE

Eat At Joe’s dining area is a mix of bar seating and family tables with an open-view kitchen, and with only about 15 tables, you’ll likely need to wait at the bar with a cold beer for a bit if you arrive during a big game. Do whatever it takes to secure a spot here, because the classic American menu has excellent staples like the French Dip and Deep Fried Oreos—the latter being one of the best things you can eat in Huntington Beach. Just know the happy hour specials start after 8pm.
Fuji’s Famous Burger
$ | (714) 891-6066 | WEBSITE

Most of Huntington Beach’s burger joints are classic American, but Fuji’s Famous Burger—with its unexpected but well-executed flavor combinations—is likely the most distinctive (and affordable) of these options in the area. They do a straightforward, à la carte menu, which blends dishes and ingredients from different cuisines into one cohesive experience. Recently, I tried the OG Teriyaki Burger alongside a Beef Bowl and a side of miso soup that was described as perfect.
Plus, Fuji’s space is like some kind of cozy urban hideaway with its humble ‘hole in the wall’ vibe and casual, family-friendly atmosphere that somehow feels like the perfect setting for this kind of meal.
Shake Shack Huntington Beach
$ | (562) 617-0299 | WEBSITE

Head to Shake Shack Huntington Beach for family-friendly dining and consistently tasty burgers. And good luck not ordering one of their classic cheeseburgers, especially once you see one go by with perfectly melted cheese, fresh lettuce, and their signature ShackSauce. The spacious dining area is comfortable, and the friendly staff like Crystal ensure a pleasant experience.
While they have efficient drive-thru service, don’t expect lightning speed at the counter—it’s usually a bit easier to get quick service through the drive-thru, thanks to Shake Shack’s streamlined ordering system and helpful attendants.
Duke’s Burgers
$ | (714) 842-1551 | WEBSITE

It’d be easy to overlook Duke’s Burgers, a small eatery tucked away from the main tourist strips in Huntington Beach. But it’s worth seeking out while in town, despite the fact that it’s often bustling with locals and visitors alike. You can count on reliably delicious dishes like the breakfast burritos with their kick of red sauce, the fluffy egg tuck sandwich with melted cheese and ham, and simple but perfectly prepared spinach & cheese omelets with fresh hash browns.
The recently added Bulgogi bowl and burger, along with Korean fusion items like the crunchy, perfectly fermented kimchi, are also standout options. Arrive early or be prepared for a short wait, especially on weekend mornings.
TK Burger
$ | (714) 960-3238 | WEBSITE

It’s not easy to find beachside spots that deliver both quality and value, but TK Burger fills that void. Fortunately, it’s also reliably delicious, leaning heavily on classic American comfort food with a surf-inspired twist. The Big Bargain Special, featuring a perfectly cooked burger and some of the best crispy fries, is a particular standout, and the generous portions have been a local favorite for years.
It pairs well with the ocean view from the outdoor seating, though the fun surf vibe will never fail to make you feel relaxed. Try and get a table outside if you’re visiting on a sunny day.
Kelly’s Donuts & Burgers
$ | (714) 596-7888 | WEBSITE

It’s hard to miss Kelly’s Donuts & Burgers as you’re cruising through Huntington Beach—the bright, cheerful storefront and welcoming vibe stand out among the local strip malls. You have two options: grab a quick breakfast sandwich and coffee at the counter for a fast start to your day, or settle in for a more substantial meal with one of their loaded burritos.
The menu is consistent throughout, but the counter service is better if you’re looking for that energetic, friendly interaction with the staff.
Pelican Isle Restaurant and Bar
$$ | (562) 592-3221 | WEBSITE

Pelican Isle Restaurant and Bar is a lively, straightforward, walk-in spot with harbor views, so don’t bother looking for reservations or a quiet dining experience. Opened with a fun, energetic vibe, Pelican Isle is a Huntington Beach marina institution with surprisingly fresh stuffed mushrooms and oyster shooters that always have the perfect level of flavor. Like any good harbor-side bar and grill, they also do generous portions and karaoke nights on Saturday with a good sound system.
While most people eat at the spacious indoor tables overlooking the marina, it’s also right on the water, so you can get your drinks to go and have a low-key waterfront moment, especially on hot days when the friendly bartenders like Susie keep the energy high.
Pocket Burger Shack
$ | (562) 592-7771 | WEBSITE

Pocket Burger Shack has been Sunset Beach’s go-to spot for kind-of-indulgent quick eats for more than a few years. Plus, the fact that it’s just steps away from the beach makes it the place to be on summer weekends if you need a fast lunch without giving up your prime beachside parking spot. Pocket Burger Shack focuses on juicy and flavorful burgers, with Wagyu patties, sweet buns, and teriyaki sauce options that burger lovers will adore (though it does have a few bowls and salads).
Service is usually quite friendly, even when there’s a line out the door.
