Whether you crave crispy fried, smoky grilled, or perfectly roasted, chicken is always a good idea. That’s why it’s essential to know where to find it. From Nashville hot and buttermilk-battered to lemon-herb and gluten-free, here are the best chicken spots in West Haven.
Haven Hot Chicken
$ | (203) 691-7617 | WEBSITE

After the world fell out of love with bland chicken sandwiches a few years ago, a bunch of hot chicken joints started opening around West Haven. Haven Hot Chicken was one of those spots and has thankfully managed to stay around. They have great spicy options (like the intense Haven flavor or the garlic parm), but our favorite is their garlic parm chicken sandwich. The garlic flavor is strong without tasting artificial, and it comes with just the right amount of sauce.
We can’t leave here without one.
Garden Catering – New Haven
$ | (475) 655-2816 | WEBSITE

Chicken nuggets are the secret to this West Haven spot’s crispy and satisfying (yet slightly greasy) fast food. So if you can’t decide between quality or convenience, this hits a happy medium. Plus, Garden Catering has tons of great options like gluten-friendly nuggets, classic French fries, and our favorite: perfectly seasoned nuggets with hints of real chicken and a honey mustard drizzle.
Harp’s Bar & Grille
$$ | (203) 823-9504 | WEBSITE

Harp’s Bar & Grille has been a West Haven staple for years (since the late 90s to be exact). And if you’ve ever craved those classic bar bites with a side of local atmosphere, this spot is for you. Specifically their fried chicken wings. The wings have a satisfying crunch and aren’t too greasy. Plus, they’re seasoned with the right amount of spice to complement (not overwhelm) the flavor of the meat. The fish gets similar praise for its light batter, though the collard greens can be overly salty.
Drinks tend to run a bit weak for the $8-12 price point. Service can be slow—you might need to wave someone down—but the friendly staff, when you catch them, and the steady stream of classic rock create a genuinely pleasant, laid-back vibe in the dimly lit, wood-paneled room.
Charcoal Chicken
$$ | (203) 934-2682 | WEBSITE

A lot of places have a few different chicken dishes on their menu. But Charcoal Chicken (a restaurant that’s actually been a local favorite for many years in West Haven) devotes its entire menu to delicious chicken. You’ll find about 5 to choose from, with options ranging from Arroz con Pollo to Medio Pollo, and they manage to be rich and flavorful. And since they’re consistently excellent, don’t wait until you’re starving to get some. Visit now.
Mekahs Halal Spot
$ | (203) 931-1444 | WEBSITE

Mekahs Halal Spot is known for its mixed over rice (the best thing on the menu next to the hot wings), which are available all day long. This is great news, not just because they’re incredibly delicious, but because you don’t have to wait until dinner time to enjoy a fantastic meal.
Chick-fil-A
$ | (203) 234-0300 | WEBSITE

This West Haven spot is part of a Southern-based chain with locations all over the country. Chains can be hit-or-miss, but this place’s chicken sandwiches are great. Chick-fil-A’s pressure-cooked chicken creates a juicy, tender interior with a crispy exterior. They have several classics to choose from, but the savory and sweet options are the best. So go for the crispy chicken nugget meal, chicken sandwich, or cookie and cream milkshake. The lemonade is also a favorite.
The line can involve a wait, but it’s always worth it for the consistently good food that arrives quickly. The staff is extremely pleasant and attentive, often checking up on customers after they get their food. Many appreciate the polite and dedicated service, noting that the staff genuinely cares about the dining experience. It’s an excellent place to enjoy a meal with family, featuring a combo kids meal ideal for children, and is wheelchair accessible with an access ramp.
They also offer vegetarian options like salads and have ample parking space. Recently, there have been requests to bring back breakfast options, particularly the Chicken Breakfast Burrito, which many fans miss.
Southern chicken and waffle
$ | (203) 751-9111 | WEBSITE

This Southern spot in West Haven makes some of the best fried chicken in the city, including waffles. Their chicken and waffles combination is one of the only good things to come out of a long week, and the baked Mac and cheese is another reason for us to be in line at noon grabbing a table here. The chicken over rice is flavorful the way you expect Southern cooking to be, tender the way you hope fried chicken is, and comes with a delicious white sauce that balances everything perfectly.
All of that is worth the slightly higher price point, but one of the best components is the hot, sweet, and spicy sauce that comes with the chicken tenders, which transforms each bite.
