Most nights, dinner might mean reheated leftovers eaten in front of the TV. But if you’re celebrating something, or meeting someone who appreciates the art of a perfect sushi roll, you might as well make it memorable. (For ramen or izakayas specifically, see our other guides.) Here are Covington’s essential Japanese restaurants.
Haiku Hibachi and Sushi
$$ | (985) 888-6277 | WEBSITE

In 2026, the popular Covington spot Haiku Hibachi and Sushi continues to serve fresh, delicious sushi and hibachi dishes in its cozy, comfortable space. Their menu features standout items like the Mandeville roll, Gyoza, and beef fried rice with tender steak chunks, alongside a wide variety of sushi rolls including fresh salmon nigiri and the Louisiana roll.
Despite its small size, you’ll appreciate the clean, brightly lit atmosphere with a large fish tank adding a nice visual touch, while skilled chefs provide a fun dining experience at the couple of hibachi tables.
With quick, efficient service and accommodating staff who handle special requests like kid’s hibachi with chicken, plus reliable takeout and delivery staged by the counter, Haiku remains a wonderful option for families and anyone seeking tasty Asian cuisine, complete with vegetarian choices and shared parking.
Twin Sushi
$ | (985) 951-7182 | WEBSITE

Twin Sushi in Mandeville is so good that you always end up ordering way more sushi than you planned to eat. Behind the clean, quiet dining room is a full-fledged sushi operation, churning out fresh and generously portioned rolls. Specialty rolls include the Burning Man with tempura shrimp and salmon, and Dave’s Special with grilled gyoza. But if you want to keep it simple, get the fried tofu steaks or jalapeño poppers, which always come out hot and crispy.
Twin Sushi has friendly and attentive owners who make you feel right at home.
Aki Japanese Restaurant
$$ | (985) 302-5166 | WEBSITE

Aki Japanese Restaurant’s sushi menu, available daily from lunch through dinner, makes braving the consistent wait for tables completely worthwhile. Classic favorites like the melt-in-your-mouth tuna nigiri and salmon rolls are always on offer. But there are a few chef’s special creations that justify the anticipation, like off-menu items featuring exceptionally fresh fish so tender and flavorful it dissolves on the tongue.
Our favorite is the creative chef’s selection platter, showcasing the finest seafood available, ideally paired with a crisp sake or a refreshing green tea. The courteous and attentive atmosphere makes every visit feel like a special occasion, turning a simple meal into a comforting experience for sushi enthusiasts.
ZEN Japanese Grill & Sushi Bistro
$ | (985) 778-2231 | WEBSITE

This Japanese bistro in Covington feels like a nice neighborhood spot, with gorgeous decor and some big windows up front, and it’s always filled with people from the area. We especially like the tonkatsu ramen with its rich broth and tender pork, and we’re confident that the poke rainbow bowl will restore your faith in Louisiana’s sushi abilities.
Golden Koi Restaurant
$ | (985) 900-2267 | WEBSITE

This Japanese gem in Covington grew out of a passion for fresh ingredients, and there’s a welcoming quality to the cozy space with warm lighting, wooden tables, and an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs work. The food is exceptional too: try at least one order of the sesame chicken—the huge portions are crispy and glazed with that signature sauce—and one beautifully crafted Caterpillar roll with fresh avocado and eel for the table.
Everything from the house-made egg rolls to the endless sushi options feels decadent yet reasonably priced, making it a must-visit spot where the owner happily accommodates any dietary needs.
Sake Garden Sushi And Grille
$ | (985) 624-8955 | WEBSITE

Instead of sticking to the usual dinner plans, try a lunch visit at this Japanese spot in Covington. Open daily, they offer a peaceful and entertaining atmosphere perfect for a quick bite. Their menu stays consistent, but our favorite is the tempura, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with a hit of dipping sauce. Check their location for details, and come as hungry as you can. They’re open until evening, but the fresh sushi often sells out by late afternoon.
Megumi
$$ | (985) 845-1644 | WEBSITE

Megumi found its home in a Covington strip mall, but its interior is spacious and has sushi bar seating—ideal for a relaxed evening meal on the Northshore. Dine solo, join a companion, or bring your date to savor dragon rolls and Tonkotsu ramen in the warm room that could easily pass for a traditional Japanese teahouse. By dinner time, they offer their full menu, which is fortunate because then you can also sample the Cajun styled ramen with perfectly balanced spices.
Fuji Sushi
$$ | (985) 400-5103 | WEBSITE

This Japanese sushi spot is open for lunch and dinner and is famous for its all-you-can-eat buffet—especially their teriyaki salmon, Little Tokyo Roll, and Snow Crackers. You’ll also find fresh sashimi like tuna, as well as a variety of sushi rolls. If you want to customize your meal, you can mark what you want on the menu and add items like salmon and tuna sashimi.
Megumi 21
$$ | (985) 327-7040 | WEBSITE

This Japanese spot in Covington is a local favorite known for its amazing ramen, which comes in large portions and arrives impressively fast, and also its busy, noisy atmosphere on Fridays. The ramen comes in varieties like the Snow Crab Bowl and Beef Teriyaki dinner, and it’s flavorful and fresh, with a very cozy environment. We’re fans. The whole menu leans hearty, with savory items like dumplings and sushi rolls such as the Crunchy Roll and Mandeville Roll. Again—we’re fans.
We have spent many evenings in the outdoor seating here on special occasions, although we’ve had better luck with the thinner pieces on quieter nights.
Sushi Saigon
$ | (985) 893-0406 | WEBSITE

If all of our evenings ended with a meal in the calming, charming space at Sushi Saigon, we’d all be considerably happier people. Stop by this cozy spot in Covington tomorrow night, and test our theory. You’ll find Japanese favorites like spicy tuna rolls and beef udon soup on the menu, in addition to one of the area’s best sushi dinners, which comes with a variety of fresh fish and rice combinations.
