Sushi One Spot

Sushi One Spot

We’re in the midst of another sushi renaissance, and I personally couldn’t be happier about it. Sushi One Spot, the Rancho Cucamonga standout, is a restaurant that’s Japanese to its core, just like the best Tokyo spots. And just like at those places, whenever I dine at Sushi One Spot, there’s a lot of (OK, probably too much) amazing quality ayce involved. There’s also plenty of prompt, hot food, attentive service, and a clean, calm atmosphere.

Silverlake Ramen

$ | (909) 803-0537 | WEBSITE

Silverlake Ramen

Silverlake Ramen is the best ramen spot in Rancho Cucamonga. I’ve tried every bowl on their menu, and I’m not alone in that. I would guess, though, that I’m alone in one aspect: I’m a bit jealous of the people who get to dine here on a quiet Tuesday afternoon – a constant stream of perfectly al dente noodles, flavorful broths, and crispy appetizers. The solution? Grab a seat on their excellent outdoor patio during off-peak hours, like the tremendous Shoyu ramen I had last week.

This popular spot serves up their selection with quick and friendly service daily, and it’s the ideal accompaniment to watching the lively dining room fill up, (figuratively) packed with happy customers while also (literally) trying to avoid the Sunday rush. Order the chicken karaage and pork buns to start, and get the Garlic Truffle Ramen with Pork Chashu. And as far as the menu – If you’ve never been before, start with the Shoyu ramen and Soboro bowl.

KUWADA Sushi | Restaurant

KUWADA Sushi | Restaurant

While we all wait for the next culinary trend to sweep through the Inland Empire/give us something to impress our foodie friends with, might I suggest visiting KUWADA Sushi, the omakase-style destination curated by Master Chef Itchisan? Not only is the sushi – including the shrimp roll and chef’s selections – outstanding and fresh, but the restaurant particularly excels at capturing the unique blend of warmth, hospitality, and artistry that fills a memorable dining experience.

In the times before reservations became essential, you could witness all of those things on a random night at KUWADA, the sushi spot nestled in Rancho Cucamonga. Now, you can get their signature omakase menu or Dassai 23 Junmai Daiginjo Sake recommended by the chef; replicating the cozy atmosphere with its beautiful cherry blossom tree is up to you.

Satsuma Sushi Japanese Restaurant

$$ | (909) 941-7415 | WEBSITE

Satsuma Sushi Japanese Restaurant

I almost can’t believe this place still exists. It combines all of my favorite things – sushi that tastes like it just swam in, Charles’s welcoming smile, and apparently, wrestling with whether to order the broiled cod or just dive into another round of sashimi. Let’s just say I’ve had to wrestle with a lot of complex cravings while getting through a meal here.

And whenever I want to return to that authentic, no-frills Japanese dining experience (and trust me, that’s pretty often) or just want some of the best sushi in the Inland Empire (much more often), I head to Satsuma Sushi.

This long-standing spot in Rancho Cucamonga does Japanese food the way I’ve come to love it over almost 30 years – which means fresh ingredients, a liberal wasabi policy, and something called the Spicy Lemon Pepper Roll, a flavor-packed creation that’s an all-out-brawl of zest and heat in your mouth. Just be prepared for the occasional service delay that some recent reviews mention – but the warm hospitality and those baked muscles make it worth the wait.

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ

$$ | (909) 899-4748 | WEBSITE

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ is a standout Japanese barbecue spot in Rancho Cucamonga where guests grill their own meats at the table. With attentive servers like Phoenix who remember returning customers, it bounces between being a fun group experience and a surprisingly easy place to stick to a KETO diet. And, much like the two-meat lunch combo that regulars swear by, I keep waiting for people to start talking about it.

Their wide selection features quality meats, multiple vegan options, and some excellent grilling fun. So these two under-the-radar stars go together perfectly – both are delicious and deeply satisfying. Only one of them involves slow drink service that sometimes requires reminders for refills (that we know of), but Gyu-Kaku is a journey in its own right.

Sake 2 Me Sushi (30-50% off Promotion)

Sake 2 Me Sushi (30-50% off Promotion)

If you ever wondered what would happen if they combined a cozy date spot with a lively party venue, your answer is Sake 2 Me Sushi. Honestly, this place is completely delightful, but at the end of the day, I’ll eat anything that involves fresh fish. Facts are facts. It’s also atmospherically appealing, and makes dining in a welcoming space (and navigating the occasional sauce mix-up) somehow… charming? Either way, lean-in to the experience and order the Jose spicy roll.

The Rancho Cucamonga sushi spot has roots in great value, and offers most of their selections with a 30% discount. Everything from their Rainbow Roll and seaweed salad to the salmon sashimi and sushi tacos is worth ordering.

SHOKUNIN

$$$ | (909) 481-2988 | WEBSITE

SHOKUNIN

As someone who’s been chasing that perfect omakase high since my last trip to Tokyo, of course I had to try SHOKUNIN. What’s not to appreciate about this place? Delicate, beautifully balanced flavors, fresh ingredients handled with care, John the chef explaining each piece like it’s a tiny work of art, and, you know, that blue crab temaki with avocado.

And not that I’ve planned this out or anything, but, for the sake of this review, if we were to hypothetically design the ideal introductory sushi experience, it would probably look exactly like SHOKUNIN’s $75 course. Maybe I’d smile when the halibut sashimi with shiso proves that simple can be spectacular, perhaps we’d marvel at how the chu-toro with fresh wasabi melts away while the lively food court hum provides an unexpectedly charming backdrop. Who knows?

Like I said, I haven’t given this any real thought. SHOKUNIN is serving up memorable sushi inside Haven City Market, making it a hidden gem that’s absolutely worth the visit.

Kobe Japanese House

$$ | (909) 989-8188 | WEBSITE

Kobe Japanese House

First off, whether you’ve been to Japan or not, you need to try this place. Second off – if you haven’t experienced teppanyaki, what the hell are you doing? Not only is this one of the best Japanese spots in Rancho Cucamonga, but it’s also a perfect night out with friends. While it’s technically “a small business” (with the cozy atmosphere and limited seating to match), the chef also deftly sneaks in entertainment, humor, and perfectly seasoned dishes.

He also, as my one friend put it, “Makes you forget about the prices.” Like I said, the perfect dinner. But to return to the steak and shrimp we began this review with, one of the best places to find them is at Kobe Japanese House. Generous portions are cooked by Nat Sopa, the popular grill chef – and are definitely fit for both the hungry diner, master of all four food groups, and you, the master of enjoying a fun meal. Kobe Japanese House is available for dine-in, call ahead or just walk in.

Kabuki Japanese Restaurant

$$ | (909) 646-8555 | WEBSITE

Kabuki Japanese Restaurant

Sushi is one of those meals that just makes everything better, so do yourself a favor and make sure you’re sitting at Kabuki Japanese Restaurant when you’re craving that perfect California roll. For about $25, you get generous portions of fresh sushi, a bowl of miso soup, and a side of rice. It’s a tremendous deal – especially during their 3-6 pm happy hour with half-price specials – particularly when paired with an ice-cold Japanese beer.

The polite and attentive staff aside, Kabuki also offers an absolutely clean, neat environment, with service that you frankly have to experience to believe. Let me put it this way – it’s been almost a full week since my visit and I still have to remind myself every morning that I need to go back for more of that charbroiled beef.

The Poke Place

$ | (909) 989-9021 | WEBSITE

The Poke Place

The Poke Place has only been on my radar for a few months, and it’s already one of my favorite new spots in Rancho Cucamonga. It serves up generous portions of fresh poke with a wide selection of sides and sauces that let you customize your meal exactly how you like it. It’s fresh, satisfying, and will briefly make you forget you’re eating something healthy. Briefly. Pairing it with their convenient mobile app ordering will only heighten that effect.

The casual counter-service setup reminds me of the quick-service joints I grew up eating in as a kid in California, where everybody’s grabbing a quick lunch and the staff actually knows their stuff. There isn’t really a bad order here, but if you don’t get at least the 2-scoop option with some spicy mayo on the side, you’ve done yourself a disservice. Visit their location at the address listed, or use their app to order.

O-Dai-Ba Japanese Grill

$ | (909) 803-5470 | WEBSITE

O-Dai-Ba Japanese Grill

This is not a hot take, but O-Dai-Ba Japanese Grill is the best Japanese spot I’ve found in Rancho Cucamonga. Without it, so many of my other favorite local meals wouldn’t feel complete – the sushi cravings, the quick lunch needs, the reliable delivery nights. And, although the very, very good sushi, great customer service, and pleasantly surprising portions stand out, there’s something else that I always think about whenever I talk about this place: The chicken breast.

Especially, that char-tasted chicken breast, which seems to put every diner directly under its spell. And, from the moment I tasted it, the fresh delivery from O-Dai-Ba had the same effect on me. Whenever it comes up, it’s like a craving I can’t shake, and I inevitably find myself placing an order and driving to Rancho Cucamonga.

Noods Bar

$ | (909) 899-0101 | WEBSITE

Noods Bar

Based on a list of the best Japanese spots in Rancho Cucamonga, this is one of the tastiest, most satisfying, randomly delightful places to ever grace a strip mall. I mean, the very first bowl I tried was the spicy miso ramen – which does hit a little too close to perfection, re: my own comfort food cravings (although usually, I am not the one finishing the entire thing). But that soup – and plenty more like it – totally encapsulate what it’s like to be hungry for something warm and flavorful.

And although you can no longer cram yourself into their tiny, gem-like dining room (no small part of the experience), whenever I want to feel like a satisfied, relaxed, and very full (a.k.a., like someone who just discovered a diamond of cuisine) I head to this ramen bar in Rancho Cucamonga. It’s tres cool – maybe you’ve seen their awesome music playing?

– and has all of the shoyu pork ramen, shoyu chicken ramen, and, most importantly, delicious, spicy chili paste one could ever want after a long day. Dine-in without feeling rushed, or find them on the delivery platforms.
