Take a deep breath – and now exhale. We’ve reached 2026, and here in Somerville, the Japanese restaurant scene has never been more vibrant. In a city where culinary creativity thrives, we were consistently blown away by the precision, artistry, and soulful flavors found in these kitchens. From pristine sashimi to complex ramen broths, these are the ten Japanese spots that define dining in Somerville right now.
Dumpling Garden (Somerville)

No matter how they’re prepared, we’re big fans of dumplings. But there’s something really special about the ones at Dumpling Garden in Somerville, and few places do them better. Somehow, they consistently produce dumplings with perfect texture and flavor, which is quite a feat. And when paired with their crispy chicken with chili pepper or pork fried rice, we think it’s one of the best meals you can have in Somerville, which is exactly why it’s one of our favorite spots for take-out.
Sugidama Soba & Izakaya
$$ | (617) 764-5770 | WEBSITE

Some evenings, all we crave is a steaming bowl of hot soba soup with shrimp and grated vegetables tempura that arrives elegantly served and perfectly balanced. There have been plenty of those evenings lately, which is why we’ve tried similar dishes at various Japanese spots around town. Some were too bland, while others felt rushed, but the version from Sugidama Soba & Izakaya in Somerville hit that sweet spot.
Now that we think about it, we should add an order of purple sweet potato tempura next time too.
PaPa Sushi
$$ | (781) 219-3692 | WEBSITE

Our last visit to PaPa Sushi happened just before the weekend rush, and in retrospect, we should have ordered more of the spicy tuna roll. If we had it our way, these fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced bites would be served at the beginning of every meal – especially since they pair so well with a crisp sake, a drink that fuels many of our relaxed neighborhood dinners. The spicy tuna is also a major reason why PaPa Sushi is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Somerville.
Mimi’s Chūka Diner
$$ | (617) 996-6062 | WEBSITE

We’ve only ventured out for indoor dining twice since the pandemic began, and luckily one of those occasions was at Mimi’s Chūka Diner in Somerville. Our modest group of two were the sole patrons in the entire space, but that didn’t deter us from ordering a spread that could’ve satisfied a party of six. Nearly every item impressed, but the crispy and delicious pork and cabbage gyoza warrants particular praise.
Yes, the fact that they arrived piping hot from the kitchen certainly enhanced them, but after enjoying the leftovers the next day, I can confirm that these dumplings hold up remarkably well when reheated.
FUKI-Japanese-Cuisine
$$ | (617) 764-5182 | WEBSITE

We used to think that sushi was just raw fish on rice and that Union Square had no hidden gems. Well, both FUKI-Japanese-Cuisine and their autumn rolls rocked our world this year. The former served a set menu that was just like a perfectly crafted omakase, but in affordable form with a sprinkling of spicy seafood salad. Just like the cozy atmosphere, it was a surprising sensory journey. Unlike the low lighting, we actually saw every gorgeous detail.
Yoshi’s
$ | (617) 623-9263 | WEBSITE

It’s not often that we have a sushi and sashimi combo for two and think, ‘Boy, the miso soup was the best part of that fresh feast.’ But that’s exactly what happened with Yoshi’s star starter – their family recipe miso soup. Sure, it pairs well with quality fish and pork gyoza in meal form, but also with poke bowls, edamame, and even house salad. How do we know? Yoshi’s offers fast delivery without extra charges and we had a lot of time to experiment in our home kitchens this year.
And please don’t critique our inner monologue voice.
Yakitori Totto
$$ | (617) 616-5047 | WEBSITE

We appreciate traditional yakitori but sometimes crave something with more char, which is why the wagyu skewers at Yakitori Totto are perfect. They’re grilled skewers that feature premium beef, expert seasoning, and that signature smoky finish, and they taste remarkably satisfying (even though they’re simple in concept). This past winter, in the cozy space with skewers in hand and a large platter of shishito peppers by our side, the evening felt completely right.
We’re hoping for a similar experience on our next date night, which is why we’re planning to order those skewers again.
Oginger Somerville
$$ | (617) 764-1981 | WEBSITE

Oginger Somerville is supposed to feel like that neighborhood spot you wish you had around the corner, the kind of place where you can grab a quick, satisfying meal without any fuss. After a long week of work, I would’ve been happy with just about anything that didn’t involve cooking or dishes – as long as it was fresh and tasty. Luckily, my visit to Oginger was far better than that, with some incredible cold soba noodles that were perfectly chewy and refreshing.
They were so good that I’d happily go back even if the entire menu was just variations on those noodles. If you’re looking for something more substantial, the Vegas Sushi Burrito is now also available for takeout, and it’s just as satisfying as eating in the cozy dining room.
Nagomi Bento
$ | (857) 324-2376 | WEBSITE

We’ve come to expect a certain experience when we order a bento box, namely a compartmentalized tray with rice, protein, and a few predictable sides. So we were surprised when Nagomi Bento, one of the best Japanese spots in Somerville, served a karaage chicken bento that came with potato salad, carrots, green beans, soft tamagoyaki, and even flower-shaped garnishes. But once we got over our initial surprise, we realized we really appreciated the thoughtful presentation.
The variety made every bite engaging, serving almost as a culinary adventure in a box. We’re all in.
Lotus Xpress
$ | (617) 629-5909 | WEBSITE

There’s a lot happening in a plate of orange chicken from Japanese spot Lotus Xpress in Somerville. It’s sweet, tangy, crispy, and satisfying all at once, which is a level of flavor that we didn’t experience in anything else this month (we didn’t find it in our usual takeout rotation either). And the chicken is even better when paired with the fluffy white rice that comes on the side for balancing purposes. This dish is definitely at the top of the list for our first casual lunch out.
