Mexican food in Columbus can mean many things. It might be the quick taco you grab between meetings, the leisurely lunch where you linger over mole with friends, or the celebratory feast with margaritas that turns afternoon into evening. We’ve gathered our favorite spots and sorted them by occasion. Here’s where to find authentic street tacos, upscale modern Mexican, and festive cantinas perfect for any mood.
Casa Hacienda Birrieria & Taco Shop
$ | (614) 944-9033 | WEBSITE

For a quick takeout or sit-down lunch in Columbus, Casa Hacienda is the answer. The small, welcoming counter-service spot does authentic street tacos with unique flavors, in addition to perfectly cooked beans and rice and that smoky Diablo taco sauce. Birria is also served in multiple ways, like the delicious Birria Pizza with its crusty cheese edges, in case you want your tacos topped with fresh cilantro and red onion.
The space has plenty of room to sit despite the high volume of to-go orders, making it a great hole-in-the-wall with flavors worth returning for.
Torchy’s Tacos
$ | (380) 800-1440 | WEBSITE

We couldn’t write a Mexican food guide without a taco spot, so forgive us for the fact that Torchy’s Tacos can get a bit loud inside. This popular Columbus restaurant on the 15 Best list specializes in house-made tacos and frozen margaritas. Go with the classic Democrat—it keeps things simple with avocado and queso fresco, which really lets that fresh flavor shine.
La Poblanita
$ | (614) 598-9539 | WEBSITE

With some planning, you can usually catch this classic taco truck in Columbus, but weekends are a little more bustling. You’ll see regulars grabbing their weekly pastor tacos and birria tacos, and families sharing those famous pork and chicken tamales. The friendly staff also make for a seamless quick lunch, in a reliable atmosphere that’s especially appropriate if you’re craving authentic street tacos.
Tasty Tacos
$ | (614) 392-4260 | WEBSITE

We love Tasty Tacos’ authentic Mexican food. We love it even more for lunch, when dining at this Columbus spot feels just a little bit more affordable. A pretty solid selection of their tacos and dishes come at reasonable prices, and all pair perfectly with their delicious margaritas. If you’re in the area, it’s great for a casual get-together, but you can hang out and play games as well.
La Chapis Food Truck
$ | (614) 705-9764 | WEBSITE

The word “street” before “taco” doesn’t have anything to do with the location, but a state of being. And at La Chapis Food Truck, we always order the carnitas soft street tacos with green salsa and a huge plate of nachos, even if we’re parked in a lot. We prefer visiting their Columbus spot because the parking area is spacious enough for easy access.
Martha’s Fusion Kitchen
$ | (614) 914-8833 | WEBSITE

Martha’s Fusion Kitchen has hidden gem in its DNA, and it’s our favorite place to satisfy a serious craving on short notice. Did you just finish a long day? Hop in the car, and head to this unassuming spot. If a full meal isn’t in the cards for you, try the birria tacos that come with a rich consommé for dipping, or the vegan burrito that’s packed with fresh ingredients. A homemade horchata should also make an appearance.
Taco Bell
$ | (614) 497-8211 | WEBSITE

No, that’s not a gourmet taco truck—it’s actually a Taco Bell, which is also pretty reliable. Columbus’s Taco Bell is home to some very tasty tacos, because it’s run by some very efficient crew members. If you want to eat fresh Mexican food in a place that’s essentially a fast-food joint, complete with a welcoming atmosphere, this is a good, satisfying choice.
DOS SABORES MEXICAN GRILL AND CANTINA
$ | (614) 781-0713 | WEBSITE

If you’re craving a satisfying meal and want to briefly escape the daily grind, there’s Dos Sabores. A warm, inviting glow fills the well-done interior at all hours, making the idea of a blue margarita and braised pork burrito seem all the more appealing. Returning to reality might be tough, but the generous portions and excellent service make every visit worthwhile.
La Casita
$$ | (614) 457-0823 | WEBSITE

At this welcoming Columbus spot, you can enjoy a leisurely evening feasting on the “La Casita” Fajitas loaded with a variety of ingredients and a perfectly balanced margarita. (La Casita serves the same menu for lunch and dinner, but it’s much easier to find a seat at one of those rustic wooden tables during the week.) Stop in after exploring downtown or a long day at the office.
Local Cantina – Grandview
$ | (614) 488-6146 | WEBSITE

Local Cantina – Grandview is quietly the best for takeout, and that’s also when it’s simplest to get your order ready. (Not actually simple though—just somewhat simpler.) During the day the counter is open to let the aromas into this neighborhood-favorite Mexican spot, nobody seems to mind how long you linger with your chips and salsa, and it’s something of a treat to enjoy a California-style taco surrounded by people who probably don’t have to rush back to work.
Casa Mezcal Mexican Grill & Seafood
$ | (614) 423-7677 | WEBSITE

This lively Columbus spot is also a seafood grill, and they make very good tacos from their house selection of fresh ingredients and flavorful red sauce. On Tuesdays, you can get two tacos, excellent ceviche, and a soft drink for a highly reasonable $14.95. And why not pick up a nice pozole to enjoy for dinner at home later while you’re there?
Tio’s Diner
$ | (614) 444-7590 | WEBSITE

Tio’s Diner is one of our favorite places for a casual, sit-down dinner in Columbus. There’s cheerful Mexican folk art on the walls, and an open kitchen window where you can watch the staff prepare fresh guacamole right before your eyes. A great big plate of the signature Burrito Mexicano should suffice, but if you’ve got the stomach space, the Monday margarita special at just $1.99 is worth an order, too. There’s also a fantastic vegan menu option for those looking for plant-based choices.
Fiesta Del Rio Polaris
$ | (614) 505-0144 | WEBSITE

Fiesta Del Rio Polaris usually has a line out the door for weekend dinner, but we never have too much of an issue on a weekday for lunch. The bar was made for solo diners, and the tables in the back are great for a quick catch-up in Polaris. If you’re here with someone you know, make them go halfsies with you so you can have some chips and salsa as well as the perfect lunch special.
Mi Mexico Restaurant
$ | (614) 577-0143 | WEBSITE

They say that the true taste of Columbus comfort is a plate of tacos and a margarita, but we’d argue that a meal at Mi Mexico Restaurant is the real deal. The Mexican spot has been serving hungry patrons exactly that, alongside tasty burritos and authentic flavors since it opened years ago. If you come in the evening, there might be a bit of a wait, but during the day, it’s a warm and welcoming walk-in place.
Mr Grill Tacos
$ | (614) 732-2773 | WEBSITE

For authentic Mexican food in Columbus, there’s no taco spot we’d recommend more than Mr Grill Tacos. Since its opening over twenty years ago, this popular restaurant has been serving consistent quality, but the bustling dining room still exudes genuine warmth. You could go big with some chicken burritos, but the menu also has some more straightforward options, like a $12 taco plate, generous portions, and flavorful sauces.
