Duluth remembers the night it discovered authentic Mexican cuisine as “the awakening.” It was a…not so subtle explosion of flavors that captivated this northern Minnesota city, where these eight restaurants have consistently floored diners with their original takes on traditional dishes.

I know Chachos has been on many lists, but I used to go there when it was just that outdoor window, and it’s great to see it finally got the recognition it deserves. So other than the cochinita bowl, my favorite dish there is the chorizo tacos. The hot sauce they make to drizzle on the toasted flour tortillas is so good. I haven’t had it in so long. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Another restaurant I want you to know about is Azteca’s Mexican Grill in Duluth. It’s a classic US Mexican restaurant with a vibrant, colorful atmosphere. They are really good at fajitas. They have a fajita platter that comes with chicken, beef, and shrimp that has a great grilled flavor to it. They also have a really good fajita quesadilla, which is also served with homemade salsa. It’s cheesy, meaty, fresh…it’s so delicious.
Emiliano’s Mexican Restaurant

I really appreciate Emiliano’s Mexican Restaurant. My family used to visit their original location for years before it closed down. It was a classic spot for authentic Mexican food. But even today, at their new downtown Duluth location, we still have some great meals. There’s a new menu featuring their loaded burritos and unique drinks like horchata. Check it out. There’s so much flavor to be had in their hand-made dishes, and it’s important to support local restaurants.
All the best Mexican food in Duluth comes from places like this, and you never know, you might find your new favorite meal.
Mexico Lindo Restaurant

I’m glad to see they’re thriving. Every time I visit, my go-to is their fish tacos. They’re the best fish tacos I’ve ever had. You can quote me on that – the house-made salsa, the way it’s prepared, it takes me right back to my childhood. That’s comfort food to me. All of what I’m describing is the avocado toast of Mexican cuisine. I mean, I feel like any Mexican food enthusiasts might look at me and think, He’s so predictable, but it’s just that good. Try it and you’ll see what I mean.
Taco John’s

I just stopped by recently and it reminded me how good their Mexican-inspired food is. My favorite is the beef taco. It’s so satisfying, it hits the spot. It’s so good with their signature potato olés.
Burrito Union

I’m not sure what is up with the tater tots right now. I think they’re still a bit sparse. I hope that they’re going to improve the portion soon. Before the marathon and everything, my two go-to spots were Burrito Union and Brew House. That’s where I mostly eat, usually every Saturday for lunch. It’s a solid choice. There’s always a very diverse menu. That’s what I love about it: you’ve got your smashburgers and build-your-own burritos and veg options. We all rub elbows and shoulders together.
We all enjoy the food and have a great meal.
Margarita’s

I also love Margarita’s in Duluth, they have great authentic Mexican food. I also really like their queso – they always give you a nice big portion. It’s a good deal.

They have amazing Mexican street tacos, but I’m just a traditional dish kind of person. I mean, the tacos are the star, but their Menudo is the best menudo I’ve ever had. It’s just very authentic. It’s not bland at all. It’s rich, hearty, and flavorful. I also really love their torta al pastor with all the fixings.
