Alexander City often gets overlooked by food lovers heading to Birmingham or Montgomery, which boast more dining choices than a weekend farmer’s market. But this lakeside town isn’t just a pit stop on the way to somewhere better. These are the standout restaurants that will make Alexander City your new Alabama dining destination.
Castelluccio Fine Italian Dining
$$ | (256) 392-5604 | WEBSITE

This cozy Italian spot in Alexander City serves exceptional comfort food—we wouldn’t expect less from a family-run establishment that clearly cares about quality. Castelluccio features a warm and welcoming atmosphere, as well as attentive service that makes you feel right at home. We can’t say enough about the main dishes, though, like the mahi-mahi special with cilantro cream sauce or the roasted chicken mushroom risotto with perfect seasoning.
Stop in for a special occasion or just a nice dinner out, but don’t be surprised if you fill up on generous portions of filet cooked perfectly or Alfredo chicken parm. The tiramisu is highly recommended, believed to be homemade by the family, and the wine list exceeds expectations, complementing every flavorful bite.
The Local at 41 Main
$ | (256) 392-3629 | WEBSITE

The Local at 41 Main is a little restaurant with an important Amaretto Cherry Bomb. It’s acceptable to order it for a 21st birthday celebration, but then promptly return the next week and sip away at it every few days with a group of friends. We fully endorse enjoying it for ladies night, and then again for a casual visit, because Creighton’s cocktails are a celebration drink. And if fruity cocktails aren’t your thing, their well-stocked wine selection is equally as impressive.
SpringHouse
$$$ | (256) 215-7080 | WEBSITE

SpringHouse has a lot going on. At first glance, it looks refined and elegant, but then you notice the WellHouse with its amazing views that could host a small wedding party. (Quick, someone get a photographer in here). It’s beautiful, inviting, and they serve exceptional food alongside memorable service. Come here with someone special while enjoying things like the BBQ shrimp toast or the prime beef tenderloin that melts in your mouth.
Just make sure beforehand that the ladies’ room doesn’t have a changing table if you’re bringing little ones.
Chick-fil-A
$ | (938) 867-4799 | WEBSITE

Chick-fil-A is where you can get a satisfying breakfast at a reasonable price. They specialize in morning combos, and you want one of those with sausage—like consistently flavorful patties—paired with an egg biscuit. You can also get coffee, or, if you’re really hungry, the full breakfast spread. Take full advantage of the excellent customer service, which is miles better than the typical fast-food experience.
Jake’s Restaurant
$ | (256) 234-4300 | WEBSITE

If you need a place to eat that’s not too expensive but also not boring, you want Jake’s Restaurant. It’s a small-town spot with reasonably-priced entrees, a great daily special, and a margarita that doesn’t taste like cheap mix and watered-down tequila. We’ve had some of the best meals of our lives getting too emotionally invested in the porterhouse here, or the salmon entree that everyone seems to order.
Bucks Dairy Quick
$ | (256) 392-3565 | WEBSITE

You don’t have to be fancy or complicated to be a standout—just ask a hungry family, a bus driver on break, or Bucks Dairy Quick. A meal at this unassuming Southern spot can be reserved for a massively satisfying lunch that’s disguised as a simple one.
There’s a comfortable mood in the dining room that’s most appropriate for digging into things like perfectly fried chicken with crispy skin, tender green beans simmered with smoky bacon, hearty hamburger steak smothered in rich gravy, and creamy macaroni and cheese with a golden crust. The generous portions served hot from the kitchen alone are worth putting Bucks Dairy Quick on this guide.
Good Ole Boys BBQ
$ | (256) 329-0011 | WEBSITE

Good Ole Boys BBQ serves a lineup of smoked meats so masterfully conjured up that it’s possible to momentarily forget that gas station surroundings even exist. (But sure, twist our arm with a drizzle of that perfect cafeteria-style coleslaw.) Mounds of pulled pork are moist. Ribs are solid with impeccable bark encasing tender meat. And sides, like those amazing bacon cheese fries and fried green tomatoes, offset the grease nicely.
With large sandwiches and surroundings that are casual without feeling like you’ve been kicked in the jaw with a cowboy boot, it’s a weeknight no-brainer.
Kowaliga Restaurant
$$ | (256) 215-7035 | WEBSITE

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to dine with a stunning Lake Martin view while feeding turtles and ducks, first off, let’s be friends. Second, that’s exactly what Kowaliga offers. The relaxed atmosphere on the patio creates that welcoming environment we know and love, but with a satisfying experience produced by the power of good food and friendly staff.
If you’re a purist, it’s easy to enjoy their fried catfish with those large onion rings we all crave, or the Monterey Chicken with plenty of flavor and the option to add grilled shrimp. (Please exercise this option.) And even though Kowaliga only serves one type of sweetener—stevia for those with dietary restrictions—it’s one of the most appreciated touches in Alexander City. Their generous fries in portions that fill the plate are worth ordering, and the perfect side to a meal here.
Wharf Casual Seafood Alexander City
$ | (256) 392-3227 | WEBSITE

Behind the unassuming blend of sports bar energy and casual dining comfort, Wharf Casual Seafood quietly dishes out some of the finest seafood in Alexander City. Their shrimp and grits are spectacular, the honey pecan shrimp practically melts in your mouth, and simple preparations—blackened, grilled, or crispy—let the seafood shine. Their standout collard greens and hearty sides like fried green tomatoes and hush puppies are just as memorable.
Add a full bar with inviting pours and you’ve got way more than just a friendly, accommodating spot with top-notch service. You’ve got somewhere to settle in for a quality seafood meal on purpose.
Who’s Diner&Restaurant
$ | (256) 212-1501 | WEBSITE

For a classic diner experience that feels like a trip back in time, or a hearty lunch break powered by hand-patted burgers and sweet potato fries, Who’s Diner&Restaurant is the local spot you should seek out. Served in those charming old-fashioned booths, their patty melt with crispy edges and gooey cheese on grilled rye bread is pretty mandatory. So is a side of those sweet potato fries.
But their hand-patted burger, stacked with fresh lettuce, tomato, pickles, and special sauce on a soft toasted bun is great, too.
Huddle House
$ | (256) 215-7267 | WEBSITE

Huddle House makes the best plate of scrambled eggs in town. This place is a classic American diner through and through, so much like a reliable old friend, it’s destined for satisfaction. The eggs are fluffy, perfectly cooked, and don’t disappoint like some chain restaurant’s rubbery offerings, and the hot hash browns are a savory complement to crisp-edged bacon strips.
And the waffles rock too—like a golden-brown disc with butter and syrup that manage to have the crispy exterior and fluffy inside of a perfect breakfast treat. Give it a pour of coffee and dunk the toast in a side of grits for best results.
Captain D’s
$ | (256) 234-6275 | WEBSITE

Captain D’s is fried-fish central, and one of our favorite places in the entire city to grab a quick seafood meal. Grab a clean booth for your entire family, and dig into their generally well-prepared fish while you try the seafood gumbo (its quantity is questionable for its price, but it’s on the menu). You’ll be much happier than you would’ve been at that fast-food chain you almost went to.
Carib Kitchen
$ | (256) 786-2422 | WEBSITE

Sometimes you need a comforting meal, but the buffet lunch at Carib Kitchen really acts more like a comforting meal-and-wrap-you-in-a-warm-blanket-so-you-feel-like-family. This restaurant specializes in various types of outstanding home-cooked dishes, from scratch-made stews to vegetables bursting with flavor. The best thing here, however, is Ms. Dianne’s cooking.
The way Carib Kitchen balances real ingredients, huge portions, and a heavy hand of love makes us want to host a community dinner and invite them as guest chefs. A plate of their authentic food is pretty much mandatory, but you’ll want to save room for their Sunday buffet to experience everything again.
BRU 63
$ | (256) 715-7077 | WEBSITE

If you’re seeking a caffeine fix without having to endure bitter brews or settle for mediocre joe, just settle into BRU 63’s cozy interior or charming outdoor seating, a.k.a. your new morning sanctuary, for a work session, friend catch-up, or any quiet moment. The warm, inviting coffee-shop atmosphere makes this spot feel like a comforting blend of your favorite neighborhood café, a sun-dappled reading nook, and a barista’s passion project in the best way possible.
There are $5 expertly crafted lattes served in sturdy ceramic mugs alongside buttery, flaky croissants, rich chocolate chip cookies, pastries that taste like they just came out of the oven, and some of the most satisfying coffee accompaniments in town—like fresh-baked scones, cinnamon rolls drizzled with icing, and a perfect cup of pour-over that can do no wrong in our eyes. Very much like that first perfect sip of morning coffee.
Golden Dragon
$ | (256) 392-4367 | WEBSITE

Unless you’re driving to the coast for a seafood feast, it’s unlikely you’ll find crab legs and lobster tails in Alexander City. Golden Dragon is as close as you get to that experience, and you don’t even have to deal with beach traffic. The seafood is solid (particularly the coconut shrimp and calamari), and it feels like the kind of reliable spot your budget-conscious friends would pick and consider ‘splurging’ just because there are large group tables.
This is a good place for takeout, or a family dinner with ample parking available.
Sakura Bistro
$ | (256) 234-9833 | WEBSITE

Heading out for a proper Japanese meal often means navigating a sea of sushi boats, intimidating chopstick etiquette, and the looming threat of wasabi overload. But Sakura Bistro is a cozy, approachable spot that’s incredibly useful if you just want some quality rolls, hot dishes, and appetizers without any fuss. It’s also incredibly useful if you’re dining with kids or need wheelchair access, as the whole place is welcoming and accommodating.
Grab a plate of their popular Happy Family or Sashimi Regular alongside crispy egg rolls and ginger salad brightened with fresh dressing.
Dairy Creem
$ | (256) 234-6199 | WEBSITE

Dairy Creem is one of our favorite spots in town. There’s a steady crowd, a kid-friendly menu, convenient wheelchair access at the window or drive-thru, and a bacon cheeseburger basket that’s absolutely worth the wait. You’ll also find consistently good burgers considered some of the best around, though the crinkle-cut fries could use more salt compared to the old steak fries. Hole up here for a quick meal with some family on a hot afternoon for optimal results.
Sho’Nuff BBQ
$ | (256) 234-7675 | WEBSITE

Authentic Southern barbecue can be hard to find outside the region, so when that craving hits for smoky meats and comfort sides, you’re often left wanting. But Sho’Nuff BBQ is doing its part to satisfy that hunger—some of the most satisfying meals in Alexander City are coming from their welcoming spot.
Their big hamburger combo is especially fantastic: the patties are fresh and hot, the fries are crisp and tasty, and it all comes together with that classic comfort food feeling we wish we could replicate at home. Or weekly. Your meal will be hearty no matter what, so come hungry. Or don’t.
JR’s Sportsbar and Grill
$ | (256) 329-2328 | WEBSITE

We don’t know why JR’s Sportsbar and Grill is always packed, but we do know that the parking can be a challenge, so we’ll plan ahead. It’s a lively space with wooden tabletops, flat-screen TVs everywhere, and a bottle of hot sauce on every table. The cheese nuggets are particularly great if you prefer a crispier, less greasy bite, and you should also get your hands on their custom cocktails, which overflow with Southern hospitality and a zippy bartender’s touch.
Zaxby’s Chicken Fingers & Buffalo Wings
$ | (256) 234-2181 | WEBSITE

This chicken spot that serves the city’s best fingers and wings is a local staple, and our first choice for grabbing crispy chicken, dipping in flavorful sauces, and enjoying a casual meal—so head straight here whenever the craving for good fried chicken hits. The seasoning on the chicken has a wonderful kick, and it’s even better paired with their signature buffalo sauce.
Whether you go with chicken fingers, crunchy little wings tossed in tangy sauce, or the classic chicken sandwich piled high with fresh toppings, a chicken-fueled meal here is a solid way to spend an afternoon.
