The space is in a cozy shop in the Kentlands, with stylish branding, comfortable seating, and a welcoming vibe. Is it the best craft coffee you’ll have in Gaithersburg? No. But your 10am buzz definitely doesn’t care. Lines can get long here, but if you arrive before 9am, you’ll get right in.
Barking Mad

Contrary to what you might expect from a suburban strip mall, Gaithersburg has some genuinely great dining spots these days. While you can find any type of restaurant you want in the area, your first move should be Barking Mad.
Located in a charming standalone building with windows all around, you walk in to find a homey interior with a beautiful outdoor patio where pets are welcome, plus real good coffee, fantastic service, and a cool, low-key atmosphere that’s always ready for an occasional concert or event.
&pizza – Gaithersburg

And since you pride yourself on knowing the best local eats, you oblige and make their Maryland pizza dreams come true.
Coastal Flats

Coastal Flats needs little introduction. It’s one of the most recognizable spots in Gaithersburg and no matter what you’re craving, you can’t really visit this town without stopping in for at least one reasonably priced cocktail. The place turns into a total madhouse on the weekends, largely dominated by Crown development regulars looking for that perfect hanger steak and Montgomery County families whose kids think they’re at a theme park.
But on weeknights, it’s just as busy and full of people who actually live in and around the area. Come here then instead.
El Catrachito de Gaithersburg

If you come to Gaithersburg expecting a sleek, high-efficiency dining experience with endless seating, you’ll be disappointed. We don’t really do that here, and many of those places feel sterile, rushed, and generally forgettable. Except for El Catrachito. The cozy little restaurant with its limited tables is certainly authentic, but that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
Grab a plate of their famous fried green bananas with cabbage, beef fingers, and that special sauce, soak in the warm atmosphere, and watch the small kitchen team work their magic. There’s also a diverse menu of Mexican, Honduran, and Salvadorian classics in case you want to explore beyond the signature dish.
Hunan Cafe

Half the reason you’re even in Gaithersburg is because you want to eat affordable Chinese food and tell your friends back home about this hidden gem you discovered. Go to Hunan Cafe and accomplish both. Despite being one of the most reliable spots in town, Hunan Cafe gets largely overlooked by those chasing trendier places, giving the whole restaurant a welcoming and familiar atmosphere to enjoy a meal in.
The food is consistently good, but you’re getting way more than just General Tso’s Chicken here.
Ted’s Montana Grill

Gaithersburg is full of chain restaurants that feel like they were designed by corporate committees in windowless offices. On the surface, Ted’s Montana Grill is one of them. This rustic steakhouse on the main strip has bison heads on the walls, a dedicated gluten-free menu, and bison short ribs that actually taste like they came from Montana.
It’s straightforward, but manages to pull it off because the burgers are excellent, the staff is always friendly, and you never have to wait long for a table – an important detail to consider when dining with kids.
The Bench

A long, relaxing meal with a view of the lake is a special treat in Gaithersburg. But finding the right spot to unwind isn’t easy. So just go to The Bench. Tucked away with a peaceful setting overlooking the water, The Bench is the kind of place you walk into hungry and leave after savoring the butternut squash soup because you enjoyed every spoonful. This is not your loud sports bar.
This is a friendly, watch-the-game-with-everybody gathering, and one of the most pleasant dining experiences you can have in Maryland.
Corner Pizza & subs

Gaithersburg has plenty of chain pizza joints. But for our money, you won’t find any better (or more satisfying) than Corner Pizza & Subs in the Gaithersburg Center shopping center. Generous portions, fresh ingredients, and a vibe straight out of a family-run neighborhood spot. It can definitely get busy here, but that’s the price you pay for quality and value.
Chicken Bar – Peruvian Cuisine

Given that most of Gaithersburg’s Peruvian spots are predictable storefronts filled with rushed takeout orders, Chicken Bar’s fantastic space feels invaluable. Or at the very least, a bit more inviting. Located in a welcoming strip in Gaithersburg, Chicken Bar is just as much of a dining destination as it is a chicken joint. And while the food is delicious, we love it most as a place to unwind, savor some incredibly flavorful aji amarillo sauce, and watch the soccer match on the large screens.
And after you’ve enjoyed a satisfying meal, it’ll be easier to justify spending $25 on that perfectly balanced pan con chicharrón sandwich.
Potbelly

Potbelly is one of the most reliable sandwich spots in Gaithersburg, but it’s no secret that this family-friendly eatery has faced some ventilation issues in recent years. Good news – after some adjustments and continued focus on quality, Potbelly remains a solid choice for a quick, satisfying meal.
The sandwiches are a mix of classic favorites and creative options like the popular tuna bacon sandwich and spicy chicken sandwich, and the additional treats are way better than they need to be (get the ice cream or shakes). If you’re in town looking for that welcoming, no-fuss atmosphere in a space that’s actually filled with families and friends enjoying reasonable prices, head to Potbelly.

There’s also standout combo fajitas, excellent guacamole, and a crowd that’s always ready to celebrate. Pick up a refreshing jamaica or maracuya drink from the counter, order some birria tacos with consommé, and spend the evening in their warm dining area. This is what eating Mexican food is supposed to taste like.
