These are the Galion restaurants that stopped us in our tracks this year. They’re the spots that made a Tuesday night in Ohio feel like a culinary destination, the storefronts we’d gladly drive an hour for, and the neighborhood gems that turned a simple dinner into the week’s most anticipated event.
Fox Winery
$ | (419) 405-1143 | WEBSITE

In a region that’s increasingly filled with generic chain restaurants and predictable dining options, Fox Winery chose a charmingly personal approach. And that’s exactly why we love this delightful winery in Galion. An evening inside their cozy tasting room feels like a relaxed gathering at a friend’s home where wine flows like conversation. This is a great place to bring a group of friends who might be into trying a flight of unique wines—but drinking is not the (whole) point here.
Options like Fox Winery’s robust Amarone, spicy Jalapeno wine, and fruity acai raspberry are what keep us coming back for more. With its combination of warm hospitality from owner Ron and consistently good wines, Fox Winery is exactly the kind of spot Galion needs. And since it’s usually never packed, you won’t have to make reservations weeks in advance to visit here.
Whistle Stop Cafe
$ | (419) 468-1018 | WEBSITE

This family-owned cafe in Galion feels like a neighborhood hangout for retired teachers and people who probably won blue ribbons at the county fair in the ’90s. Whether we stop by in the morning for biscuits and gravy or at lunch for fried green tomatoes and hamburger salad, we like to join the friendly scene at the cozy tables inside. Service aside, we can always count on Whistle Stop Cafe to treat breakfast with the respect it deserves.
They offer several classics of the comfort-food variety in the form of fluffy pancakes, perfectly cooked over medium eggs with bacon and toast, and satisfying daily specials. But what really sets Whistle Stop Cafe apart from most of the other diners in Ohio is that small-town charm is the star of every visit.
From the kind, professional staff who go above and beyond on busy holidays to the clean, inviting atmosphere that makes you want to chat with the nearest neighbor, the warmth at this hidden gem will make you want to pull up a chair and stay awhile.
Tim Hortons
$ | (419) 777-7452 | WEBSITE

If you ever went to a coffee shop as a kid with your grandparents, then proceeded to have the best morning of your seven-year-old life, that’s pretty much what visiting Tim Hortons is like (except you’re an adult now). At first glance, this coffee and donut chain might look like a corporate operation for the hurried commuters of Galion, but it’s actually more of a reliable-comfort spot where 30-somethings in work uniforms bring their kids for Saturday morning chocolate dips.
Yes, you can order catering for 125 people on short notice here, but you can also get a $2 coffee and a $1.50 donut. Put on your comfiest clothes, and get ready for a truly satisfying visit, starting with a top-notch brew poured into a steaming cup by a staff member sporting a friendly smile despite the busy rush.
Three Bean Coffee House
$ | (419) 777-0017 | WEBSITE

In the heart of Galion, a charming town that’s been quietly revitalizing its historic downtown, a cozy coffee shop found its perfect home in a renovated brick building on a tree-lined street. With commercial spaces in the neighborhood more welcoming than ever, the owners transformed the space into a warm and inviting coffee house complete with comfortable seating areas and a counter filled with tempting baked goods.
Now, that team is serving delicious salted caramel butterscotch lattes that taste like liquid dessert, breakfast sandwiches made with locally sourced meat that melts in your mouth, and dairy-free options featuring creamy oat milk that rivals the real thing. These are, without a doubt, the best coffee drinks in Galion, and they’re high on the list of best in the region. We invite you to remain skeptical of all the local buzz. Go try these drinks, and let us know.
M & S Carry Out & Pizza
$ | (419) 468-3138 | WEBSITE

A lot of Ohio spots serve decent pizza, but few challenge what you know to be true about small-town carry-out joints. That’s the phenomenon of M & S Carry Out & Pizza, a restaurant where, in one order, you will likely try creations associated with classic American comfort food.
As you move from their phenomenal dough and sauce to the delicious chicken bacon ranch pizza and meatball sub loaded with cheese, you’ll come to the (correct) conclusion that a memorable meal can indeed take place in this unassuming Mom and Pop shop in Galion. Few local restaurants make such an obvious effort to deliver hometown charm and excellent food like M & S does, and even fewer do it with fast preparation on busy Friday nights and friendly service from longtime employees.
Tubby’s Pizza
$ | (419) 468-4411 | WEBSITE

Galion has plenty of places to grab a quick slice with friends, but restaurants spotlighting customizable pizzas and subs with consistent quality are a bit harder to find. Tubby’s Pizza is one such place, and it makes random weeknights in the wintertime feel satisfying. At this local spot, you’ll sit in a simple, no-frills dining area with a table full of amazing Italian subs loaded with pepperoni and phenomenal pizzas that are baked until they taste just right.
In all likelihood, your meal’s atmosphere will include friendly staff chatting with regulars and the hum of delivery orders being prepared. Once your plate is loaded with the perfect combination of great-tasting, low-priced pizza and amazing subs, you’ll be all set for one of your favorite Galion dining experiences in recent memory.
Romeo’s Pizza
$ | (419) 971-0777 | WEBSITE

If you want to try Romeo’s Pizza’s fresh, satisfying, and crowd-pleasing pizza, you have two options. You can either order ahead for pickup at their clean and well-organized counter, or you can swing by after activities like ATV Racing when you’re craving something reliable. We suggest you do the latter. Beyond Romeo’s Pizza’s classic pies that come loaded with quality ingredients, the Stromboli is a hearty, flavorful masterpiece.
It comes with a touch of daily special magic and some calzone options that are packed with that same fresh taste, all in a welcoming atmosphere. Add an order of the gluten-free pizza that actually tastes good without feeling like cardboard, and you have a must-visit spot in Galion. Bring the family, try a few different items, and never settle for mediocre pizza again.
Z’s Grog
$ | (419) 462-1398 | WEBSITE

When a bar feels as welcoming as Z’s Grog, its cash-only policy becomes the last thing on your mind. This lively, late-night spot highlights cheap drinks and friendly locals as if they possess main character energy (which they do). Come here for pool table games, hip hop from the jukebox, and Jenn the bartender who ensures drinks never go empty. At Z’s Grog, you can either be accidentally or purposefully rowdy, which is precisely the kind of bar that we need more of in this city.
Pub House 123
$ | (567) 393-9394 | WEBSITE

Pub House 123 is remarkable simply for its welcoming atmosphere—the cozy space feels like a warm embrace, and the brewery’s commitment to local heritage is palpable throughout. But the exceptional beers and attentive staff at this Galion spot deserve to be celebrated as well. The impressive selection is full of standouts, like the outstanding Irish red, the hazy IPA with its fascinating history, and a range of other brews each with their own story.
This is a phenomenal destination for beer enthusiasts, but you could easily just settle into the comfortable seating if you’re from the area, savor that hazy IPA, and soak up the inviting energy of the place.
Mi Cerrito Mexican Restaurant Galion
$ | (567) 393-9024 | WEBSITE

It’s been around for a while, but Mi Cerrito remains one of the best restaurants to have graced Galion in years. Their enchiladas suizas are a top contender for the most comforting dish in town, and the shredded beef chimichanga could be the focus of a TED Talk on how a restaurant should balance flavor and texture.
The golden-fried parcel is generously filled and not too heavy, and it perfectly showcases what makes Mi Cerrito so special: authentic, well-executed Mexican classics that have multiple layers of flavor. This restaurant’s dishes now have a permanent place in our weeknight and weekend meal rotation, and, between an entree and a margarita, you can easily walk away having spent $25 on a satisfying dinner.
East of Chicago
$ | (419) 468-8333 | WEBSITE

In a town where consistency can be hard to find, there’s something refreshing about a place that delivers exactly what it promises. East of Chicago has been serving Galion since before the pandemic, sticking to its straightforward approach while others kept changing. Today, this local spot offers a simple menu where most items fall in the $8–$12 range, with subs being the clear standout.
You’ll know what you’re getting here, but expect this kitchen to surprise you with how good familiar food can taste—even when it’s something as basic as a grilled chicken salad. That salad might come with crisp greens and perfectly seasoned chicken, or a sub with fresh ingredients piled high on soft bread. Whatever you order, you’ll enjoy it in a space that feels like a classic neighborhood joint, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home.
Wendy’s
$ | (419) 462-5003 | WEBSITE

Wendy’s is the year’s first reliable restaurant that inspired us to work hard to get through the drive-thru, roll down the window, and put on a smile that makes our day look good (in that order). After operating as a consistent favorite for years, Wendy’s found a permanent place in our regular rotation and began serving consistently good food without any fuss. The service? Fast and friendly or something similar. The staff? Helpful and attentive with some who have been working there for ages.
The food? Heavily dictated by what’s fresh and prepared with care. If you’re like us, you’ll probably arrive with a heat-seeking mission to eat chili cheese fries—but you’ll leave thinking about how everything was clean and fresh.
The Mad Batter (Formerly Cake & Icing)
$ | (419) 468-1101 | WEBSITE

The Mad Batter, a beloved bakery in Galion, almost exclusively crafts treats that taste like they came from a grandmother’s kitchen. They serve up blueberry lemon donuts that are heavenly, thick-cut sugar cookies with a great vanilla flavor, and gelato that’s a delightful treat, especially on a rainy day. The bakery’s buttercream hails from rich, creamy recipes, and many of their cupcake fillings feature local blueberries.
If you’ve been carrying around the misconception that bakeries are just for rushed coffee stops, come to this charming-but-unassuming shop, pick up a moist and perfect cupcake with a custom design, and be proven wrong.
El Tarasco Mexican Restaurant
$ | (419) 777-7403 | WEBSITE

There are only a handful of Mexican restaurants in Galion that live in our heads rent-free. El Tarasco stands out from the rest, and now, on the local dining scene, it’s become a must-visit. It started off as a neighborhood favorite, but this Mexican spot has expanded with plenty of open space both inside and out where you can take your time exploring dishes like potato enchiladas and other vegetarian options.
Both involve generous portions, and you could easily have a full meal by just ordering this combo. El Tarasco is a top-tier option for a casual family dinner, especially considering that prices are comparable to other restaurants. It’s also worth noting that this is one of the few places in Galion currently offering such welcoming, kid-friendly atmosphere with beautiful decor.
Caleb’s @ DK’s
$ | (419) 468-5354 | WEBSITE

Few are having as triumphant a run as the team behind Caleb’s @ DK’s—which happens to be operated by the same family that runs another beloved spot in town. Is it ridiculous that we’re talking about these restaurateurs twice in the same local guide? No. It’s well deserved. After establishing their reputation for quality years ago, the family unveiled Caleb’s @ DK’s, an exceptional Galion restaurant that zeroes in on classic American comfort food typically made in family-friendly settings.
Highlights include a crispy mushroom swiss burger served with fresh-cut fries that we’d like to eat for lunch every day, perfectly cooked BLTs with generous bacon portions, and a basket of golden cheese sticks drenched in warm marinara that tastes like garlic and herbs.
