There’s a lot of consistency going on here—and some of it shines brighter than others—but when you’re in the mood for some solid bar food that you don’t have to dress up for, this is your spot. There’s also a great Sunday brunch, where you can get tasty choices and friendly service without the fuss.
Caffe Florian

The menu’s about what you’d expect from a local Chinese takeout joint—classics like chicken and broccoli, vegetable chowmein, and salt and pepper wings—but that’s not the whole story. You’re here to unwind on the covered patio, enjoy the generous portions, and to watch families dig into the kid-friendly options.

Randy’s Huli Chicken and Ribs is exactly the kind of roadside BBQ joint you might expect to find in any beach town—complete with tender brisket, juicy huli chicken, and the requisite mac and cheese—with the occasional Hawaiian twist, like the combo plate (basically a local version of a sampler platter).
The restaurant doesn’t take reservations for dinner—so show up early or expect to miss out on some items, like the ribs—but you can pass the time enjoying the shaded picnic tables or at the nearby beach. They’re also open for lunch, too, but midday here doesn’t have the same lively atmosphere about it.
Kona Joe Coffee LLC

A Big Island favorite, Kona Joe Coffee LLC has been welcoming visitors for years. People have been coming to this coffee destination for a long time, for everything from morning pick-me-ups and afternoon breaks to special tours. It’s especially nice when you’re treating yourself. The drink selection stays pretty consistent, but you’ll find a few premium options like the French Press Peaberry for $30, a delicious cold brew with mac nut, and various other coffee drinks.
The facility is bright and airy with stunning panoramic ocean views, but our favorite spot remains the cozy gift shop area, where we’ll happily sample the free coffee offerings and chat with the friendly staff.
Rebel Kitchen

When people think of Kealakekua’s dining scene, they’re probably thinking of someplace like Rebel Kitchen, one of the local mainstays that has avoided its neighborhood’s over-commercialization. Most visits don’t require reservations—just a $12-15 average plate, and sometimes not even that (unless it’s peak weekend hours). A single meal might include the poke covered in mole on a wonton appetizer, the best shroom burger ever, and the flavorful but mild jambalaya.
Grab a local craft beer and soak up the lively ambiance of a spot that belongs in a laid-back island movie.
Reel Aloha poke and fish co

From the team behind some of the freshest seafood spots on the island, Reel Aloha Poke and Fish Co. offers satisfying poke bowls and platters in a clean, welcoming space with ocean views. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, the poke is far too fresh and flavorful to be considered just another casual spot—the salmon poke rivals downtown Kona sushi. But you’re here for the wide variety of poke options and lovely tasting sides like macaroni salad and uala purple sweet potato poi, not just the view.
The generously sized bowls lean pretty classic when it comes to ingredients—the platters, on the other hand, offer a little more variety with rice and edamame.
Teshima’s Restaurant

A local institution with great Japanese food in Kealakekua, Teshima’s is a place to relax and feel like part of the community, as you watch the friendly staff serve your meal in a dining room that’s basically a capsule of history and tradition, all to the soundtrack of satisfied chatter and clinking plates. If you have the appetite, the patience for a possible line, and the desire for fantastic food, there’s hardly a better meal to be found on the island.
You can also check out their weekend lunch special for an easier-to-score experience (with quick-moving wait times) where you can order some delicious omelette rice from the same kitchen, plus marvel at incredibly fresh sashimi that rivals any on the coast.
O’z Kitchen

Equal parts food truck, dessert stop, and casual hangout, O’z Kitchen is a great spot to swing by for some Japanese comfort food and refreshing treats. It’s located just far enough from the tourist bustle to make it a welcome escape from the usual crowds, or as a perfect pit stop after a long day exploring the coast.
The specialty here is generous portions of tempura and taiyaki that are good for satisfying the inevitable craving for crispy, flavorful bites, but there’s also amazing Chicken Katsu and shaved ice made with real fruit syrup. It’s one of our favorite places in town for grabbing a peaceful meal—and it only gets better with the incredibly friendly staff and fun atmosphere, complete with roaming chickens.
Standard Bakery Inc

Tucked away in a modest storefront, Standard Bakery Inc offers delicious treats and excellent service. Order an Ube White Mocha Cold Brew and some avocado toast to start, then grab the spicy crab musubi, fresh pastries, and whatever else catches your eye. But also be ready to drop $8 on that insanely good ube latte.
The HI Dive Bar

Tucked away in Kealakekua, The HI Dive Bar is one of our favorite spots for a laid-back evening in all of Hawaii. Grab a seat on the screened-in back patio if you need to catch the stunning sunset, or just grab a board game by the entrance to keep you company while you soak up the authentic Hawaiian hospitality.

It might be called Kaya’s Kawanui Inc, but there’s a lot more going on here than just what’s on the sign. Kaya’s also has an impressive selection of gluten-free and vegan options (and even homemade focaccia bread). You’ll usually see a good mix of families enjoying the toys and books for kids, small groups relaxing with free WiFi, and people happy because they’re eating delicious cinnamon rolls and peanut butter brownies. Captain Cook Trading Co

Between the macadamia varieties, the coffee roasts, and the staff insights, there are countless discoveries you can make here, or you can just go with their unbeatable standard offerings if you find yourself overwhelmed by choice. Just remember to bring cash—it’s part of the charm.
