There’s a reason why Kirksville’s dining scene draws everyone from college students to longtime locals. It’s diverse, welcoming, and has something for every appetite—it’s essentially the heartland’s culinary crossroads. And because we’re not limited to one cuisine, Kirksville chefs explore that landscape of flavors with farm-to-table fare, global bites, classic comfort food, and more. While there isn’t one restaurant to rule them all, these 18 spots deliver the memorable meals we crave.
Scooter’s Coffee
$ | (660) 956-9282 | WEBSITE

Scooter’s Coffee has just a handful of signature drinks on the menu, but that’s all they’ve needed to become a favorite study spot and gathering place in Kirksville. Each beverage is a really good take on a classic coffee shop offering. The blended caramelicious drink with its generous swirls of caramel and creamy texture that you can taste before you even take the first sip is the standout.
There’s a comfortable seating area with plenty of tables that are usually full by mid-morning with students and locals enjoying free drinks when there are occasional order mistakes.
La Pa Mexican Bar & Grill
$ | (660) 665-8450 | WEBSITE

There’s a section of La Pa Mexican Bar & Grill’s menu that’s dedicated to tacos. Anytime we see that variety, it tends to mean things are about to get delicious where Mexican food is concerned. We’re happy to confirm this Kirksville hotspot’s tasty tacos are worthy of that expectation. Slide into a booth or table in the spacious dining room with its cool Mexican-style decor and dive into al pastor tacos packed with juicy marinated pork and fresh pineapple—our favorite on the menu.
Or opt for the excellent shrimp tacos with plump grilled shrimp and crisp cabbage slaw. The chips and salsa are always hot and fresh, and the homemade sangria is a perfect companion. While food quality can vary slightly depending on who’s working, everything is made with care and served by great staff in this clean, welcoming environment.
Bellacino’s Pizza & Grinders
$ | (660) 665-7665 | WEBSITE

Open for lunch and dinner, Bellacino’s is a family-friendly hero that’s saved many weeknights from boring meal routines. This pizza and grinder spot has been part of the Kirksville dining scene for years. They’re consistently reliable no matter when you visit. If you’ve never had Bellacino’s, start your journey with their classic pizza since it’s considered some of the best in town. Then explore other favorites like their soft grinders or the praised spaghetti dinner.
Sip Downtown
$$ | (660) 730-5050 | WEBSITE

This downtown Kirksville spot is more of a wine bar than a full restaurant, so you already know the kind of small bites you’re here for (sorry, big eaters). That would be a selection of delightful creations that perfectly complement their self-serve wine wall. The blackberry flatbread tops a crisp crust with tangy goat cheese, sweet berries, and a drizzle of balsamic that makes each bite sing. It’s elegant enough to impress a date—or a whole group of friends—for a sophisticated night out.
For a savory choice, try the Bleu cheese flatbread—a crispy base loaded with sharp cheese, smoky bacon, caramelized onions, and a hint of rosemary. Plus, we can confirm their daily soups, served with crusty bread, are fully besting that chain café that claims they have the coziest vibe.
Maxwell’s
$ | (660) 956-0648 | WEBSITE

With a Kirksville location in the heart of Missouri, Maxwell’s is a local spot that serves up satisfying comfort food with a friendly, welcoming vibe. The fried catfish measures in at a generous portion. And while the crispy coating might not seem that unique, the flaky, tender fish inside is. The southwest burger is our go-to sandwich order, packed with flavorful beef and toppings served with a side of their homemade chips and drunken dip sauce.
We also dig their inviting dining area, which feels so much like a cozy neighborhood hangout that we’re surprised they don’t have board games permanently set up on every table.
Diner 54
$ | (660) 665-6300 | WEBSITE

This Kirksville mainstay, nestled among the city’s familiar storefronts, dishes out some of the most satisfying comfort food in the region. What they’re really known for is their excellent homemade hot sauce available for purchase. A huge menu with tasty options, including vegetarian modifications, means multiple visits to Diner 54 are necessary to sample everything. But the Midwest comfort classics at reasonable prices are our favorite and the most popular orders here.
Their clean, welcoming atmosphere with cute modern decor is the standout. And when we’re finished with our meal, we often buy a few bottles of that hot sauce to help bring the flavor home. So far, we’ve been unsuccessful in our attempts to recreate their reliable, enjoyable dining experience elsewhere, which just means more trips to Diner 54 are in our future.
Greek Corner Gyros
$ | (660) 665-0300 | WEBSITE

Greek Corner Gyros offers more than a dozen Mediterranean-inspired dishes. So whether you’re craving a classic gyro sandwich or something like chicken provolone, Greek Corner has a satisfying version of it. Nestled in Kirksville’s dining scene, this family-owned spot with its cozy, intimate interior is usually filled with local families and operates beautifully as a casual dine-in experience. But don’t let the unassuming patio seating fool you.
Greek Corner’s portions are generous, and with flavorful components like roasted potatoes, feta with spinach, and the owner’s highly recommended Souvlaki, they easily outshine generic fast-casual Mediterranean chains in the region. First-timers should try the gyro fries—a hearty combination of seasoned meat over crispy fries—to appreciate what makes this place a local favorite.
Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant – Kirksville
$ | (660) 627-3877 | WEBSITE

Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant sits in a lively Kirksville spot and touts their Mexican food as being “the best in the area.” That’s definitely accurate, and we can confirm it’s outstanding and the top choice around. There are dozens of dishes on the extensive menu offered with beef, pork, chicken, or vegetarian options, throwing it back to authentic Mexican home cooking.
The enchiladas verdes and chicken chimichanga are our faves—get them with the outstanding chips and salsa that come in healthy portions. Just make sure you have some cash handy, ’cause during busy happy hours with the popular $2 margarita special, cards might slow down the quick service that usually zips along like clockwork.
Dukum Inn
$ | (660) 665-9764 | WEBSITE

This longtime college-town bar in Kirksville makes some of the best pub food in the city, but even those are eclipsed by Dukum Inn’s incredible chicken tenders. Just like the tenderloin, the hand-breaded tenders get a lovely crunch and subtle seasoning from the fryer. Unlike the onion rings, these golden strips are able to support a mound of crispy fries, creamy ranch, sweet honey mustard, and tangy barbecue sauce, which are all perfect for sharing.
But our favorite item is the tenderloin sandwich. Inspired by Midwestern tavern classics, it’s served on a soft bun with crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, sharp pickles, and damn-near a whole plate of golden fries.
Dairy Queen Grill & Chill
$ | (660) 665-1050 | WEBSITE

The cheerful sounds of kids laughing and ice cream machines whirring is your first indication that this place leans more family-friendly than fast food. Let that guide you toward their signature items—our family’s favorites here—like the crispy chicken meal or personalized birthday cake. It’s not that the ice cream alone is lacking. It comes in the same thick, creamy texture with endless flavor options.
But very few spots in Kirksville do a quick and affordable family meal as well as Dairy Queen, so take advantage. Plus, their meal specials just pair better with a fabulous pup cup for your furry friend.
To Die For Bakery
$ | (660) 988-1629 | WEBSITE

The Kirksville bakery isn’t open as late anymore (another thing the pandemic changed), but they still have $4 lemon poppy seed muffins that are perfect when you’re craving a morning treat before noon. Or when your pastry life gets predictable, come here for delightful options like beautiful cakes topped with intricate designs and a drizzle of fresh glaze or a student collaboration special made with seasonal inspiration.
But standard selections like their glorious muffins, their version of a classic bakery staple, are my must-orders. And while you nibble, notice what’s happening behind the counter—it’s usually the kind owner baking from her heart with genuine care. And the friendly staff are waiting to assist you if you’re overwhelmed by all the delicious choices.
Chen’s Palace
$ | (660) 627-8888 | WEBSITE

It’s no exaggeration to say Kirksville will put soy sauce on everything. Just know it actually works on Chen’s Palace’s shredded pork eggplant, since it’s a savory, umami-packed take on a classic Chinese dish and the thing to order here. Although the takeout-only spot only offers a few standout options, they’re all phenomenal thanks to fresh made-to-order ingredients, generous portions of meat, and their signature flavorful sauces.
That includes their vegetarian sesame tofu with crispy tofu and vegetables, which is also one of the best things to eat in the whole town.
La Fuente
$ | (660) 627-5340 | WEBSITE

This Kirksville spot offers a range of Mexican foods, but they aren’t called La Fuente for nothing. They’ve got generous portions with plenty of options like enchiladas and vegetarian dishes. We’re partial to the Enchiladas, which come with flavorful fillings, sauce, all on fresh tortillas. We usually bring home leftovers the size of a small mountain because the excessive amount of delicious food makes the meal extra satisfying.
Those looking for convenience can skip the dine-in experience and head to the cheerful space with wheelchair accessibility and thoughtful packaging for take-out orders.
Pagliai’s Pizza
$ | (660) 665-6678 | WEBSITE

Sorry to our New York-style pizza purists, but this college-town pizzeria is geared more toward hearty, comforting pies than those seeking thin-crust perfection (i.e. the crust here is fluffy enough to double as a pillow). These generous slices and whole pies have toppings piled so high we half expect to find a culinary engineering degree on the wall.
Your favorite order will largely depend on appetite, but ours is the Palonza with its fluffy crust, rich fillings, and that quirky side of pickle and chips. With walls adorned in local sports photos and a vibe that tells you this is where late-night cravings come to die happily, Pagliai’s is probably the closest you can get to eating at a Midwestern campus institution.
THE PRESS ROOM
$ | (660) 280-6041 | WEBSITE

It should be no big surprise that a place called THE PRESS ROOM serves up incredibly good casual fare. And while you’re not overwhelmed with options, the focused menu really delivers for different moods. If a satisfying lunch is the goal, the chicken tenders with sidewinder fries should be your pick—they’re crispy, flavorful, and come out fast.
On those afternoons when you want to keep things lighter, THE PRESS ROOM has you covered with their healthy menu selections and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere perfect for a quick bite. The owner’s helpfulness with food allergies and the friendly service make it a reliable spot near campus, and those unique alcoholic beverages are definitely worth sampling.
Great wall chinese restaurant
$ | (660) 665-9029 | WEBSITE

This spot in Kirksville is a local institution, so they’ve already got some Chinese food cred. But Great Wall covers an array of Americanized Chinese genres from orange chicken to moo goo gai pan and even crab rangoon. And they are all done consistently well. Our go-to is the orange chicken with its crispy coating and tangy sauce alongside some really high-quality steamed dumplings.
And for those who can’t eat Chinese without a rice side, Great Wall makes some of the best fried rice in town, which is light and fluffy without being too greasy.
Mizu hibachi sushi & ramen
$ | (660) 956-0295 | WEBSITE

We know Mizu Hibachi Sushi & Ramen has other dishes (bento boxes, hibachi fare, etc.). And we know they’re good. But we can’t come here without ordering the fried calamari. It’s packed with tender squid and tangy dipping sauce all on a perfectly crispy batter with a soft, chewy interior. One bite and you’ll understand why Mizu has been the go-to calamari spot in Kirksville. Chow down in the casual clean dining area and get some tasty fried rice as your side.
King’s Buffet
$ | (660) 665-6622 | WEBSITE

When you want a family-friendly meal with endless options, King’s Buffet serves up a well-stocked selection like fresh salads, tempting desserts, and a particularly impressive seafood spread that draws crowds on Friday and Saturday nights. But the main reason you should grab a table at this calm, professional spot is for the genuine Chinese dishes. They’re our favorite buffet items, maybe ever (and also the most satisfying).
A moderately priced visit finds its perfect match in efficient, friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere that caters to all ages. Just be prepared for variety because after you sample the choices once, you’ll be planning your next visit with friends.
