Lafayette’s oak-lined streets still whisper with Cajun fiddle tunes, and the scent of roux still hangs in the humid air. Yet between the century-old po’boy shops and zydeco halls, a new culinary rhythm pulses. From crawfish boils under live oaks to modern Creole tasting menus, we’ve mapped where tradition meets tomorrow. You already know the flavors run deep here—we just gathered the very best.
Louisiana Poboys – Johnston
$ | (337) 984-4191 | WEBSITE

Louisiana Poboys – Johnston is a Lafayette staple that’s been around for years serving exceptional Cajun diner food. We’re big fans of the prime beef steaks here, cooked to juicy perfection. Get the tenderloin salad with fresh greens, as well as the full shrimp Poboy that defies all the laws of sandwich physics.
The Bulldog
$$ | (337) 484-3192 | WEBSITE

The Bulldog brings with it a whole new bar category: Louisiana crawfish-meets-American pub, involving things like $1 burger specials and trivia nights. There’s also a big focus on beer, where you can get things like happy hour deals and daily specials, complete with a lively atmosphere, reasonable prices, and late hours to make your own DIY evening. All the while, you’ll be enjoying from an extensive selection of beers and a popular spot suitable for all ages.
El Paso Mexican Grill Ambassador
$ | (337) 524-1824 | WEBSITE

The margaritas flow pretty generously at El Paso Mexican Grill Ambassador, a festive, brightly lit Mexican spot in Lafayette. Which means that when the craving for chicken fajitas with grilled peppers and black bean dip strikes, you can satisfy it as readily as you’d like. That’s great. Just confidently order whatever specials El Paso has on any given night and you’ll leave with a full stomach.
There are also solid chile rellenos and vegetarian options that we usually reserve for group dinners (only so we can share more chips and salsa). Afterwards, be sure to order another round of the 2-for-1 margaritas. El Paso lives a wonderful double life as a Mexican restaurant and lively hangout, and excels at both.
Kevin’s Seafood
$ | (337) 889-3885 | WEBSITE

Dinner out with the family usually means trying to find something everyone will eat and not breaking the bank in the process. We can’t promise your kids will suddenly love vegetables, but we can send you to Kevin’s Seafood to solve the budget part. It’s in a converted old Popeyes that hasn’t seen much updating, but offers plenty of seating in the straightforward dining room.
The fried broccoli is only made better by how generously it’s portioned, and they have crowd-pleasing plates for everyone at the table, including excellent sesame chicken and beef and broccoli for the traditionalists, fried shrimp with fried rice for the seafood lovers, and extra-spicy versions of anything for those who like a kick. Just know the dishes often run hotter than requested.
Sportshack Supplement Depot & Smoothie Cafe
$$ | (337) 889-3680 | WEBSITE

This place is one of Lafayette’s few health-focused cafes and has held its own near downtown and campus for a while now. The smoothies are refreshing (in the best way)—you should go for the protein-packed or fruit-based options. If you’re here for lunch, the wraps are some of the best we’ve had. And if you’re here for a quick pick-me-up, you’re also going to want to try a shake.
As if we needed another hidden gem to try to keep, there’s a supplement shop attached to the cafe called Sportshack Supplement Depot, with knowledgeable staff and excellent products.
Priya’s Indian Food
$ | (337) 326-8110 | WEBSITE

Between the vibrant chatter and the Bollywood beats that could only have been picked by a chef-turned-DJ (true story), stepping into Priya’s Indian Food feels like you just walked into Lafayette’s most welcoming party. It’s conveniently tucked away as a hidden gem in the community, making it a great place to start (or end) your evening with some flavor. Get the Butter Chicken if you want something rich and comforting, or just go all in with one of the spicy Chicken Vindaloo bowls.
The Chimes Lafayette
$$ | (337) 534-0311 | WEBSITE

The menu at The Chimes Lafayette stays reliably classic, so you can always count on that plate of catfish perdu that makes any evening feel like a Louisiana celebration. This Cajun restaurant on its shaded patio property is a cozy local gem with a menu of hearty Southern dishes pulling from Creole, Cajun, and American comfort food traditions.
The only note is that it’s a full-service restaurant, so think less “quick bite” and more “leisurely family gathering or romantic dinner.” And since they have that massive outdoor gazebo and spacious dining room, even if you forgot to plan ahead for a group, you can just say “The Chimes has plenty of room” and nobody has to know about your spontaneous decision.
Cafe Habana City
$ | (337) 267-3060 | WEBSITE

The next time you feel an unprompted craving for rice and beans so perfectly seasoned they could make a Cuban grandmother weep, or for other generous-plate versions of authentic Cuban comfort foods, head to Cafe Habana City. We can pretty much guarantee that the flavorful little bites of Rafael’s signature dishes at this inviting and accommodating Lafayette spot will be the highlight of your week.
At least until you get to the half-price mojitos during happy hour, said to be better than those in Dallas, and the margaritas that pair perfectly with the reasonably priced, satisfying portions. This is a meal you won’t want to end. Fortunately, you can linger over every thoughtfully prepared dish to prolong the experience.
Outback Steakhouse
$$ | (337) 235-4405 | WEBSITE

Outback Steakhouse focuses on one type of dining experience, and one experience only—the classic American steakhouse—in lunch or in dinner form (with families, friends, or solo diners). Both feature perfectly cooked steaks and praised Alice Springs chicken with your choice of attentive service, engaging managers, or welcoming waitstaff (we’re Team Steak, by the way).
They also offer a tranquil atmosphere—the perfect opportunity to forgo all daily stresses and find yourselves comfortably settled in a setting of reasonable prices, great food choices, and easy parking.
Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers
$ | (337) 572-9966 | WEBSITE

Raising Cane’s is a bustling, family-friendly chicken spot known for its tasty food and quick service. It’s from the popular fast-casual chain, and like all their locations, there’s a focus on consistent quality and signature sauces. Kid-friendly energy fills the space with children running around, and there’s even a drive-thru line that often backs up onto the road. Start with the chicken tenders and signature sauce, then get the chicken sandwich and put your crispy chicken cravings to the test.
Vestal Restaurant
$$$$ | (337) 534-0682 | WEBSITE

Vestal Restaurant specializes in upscale dining, featuring a menu of expertly prepared dishes like steaks, crab pasta, and fresh fish. Ask five friends what their favorite is and you’ll end up with five different answers, but the Thai coconut mussels and the watermelon salad are our favorites, along with the weekly roasted octopus special. The small plates are varied enough that you can try them all if you’re up for it.
Just ask your server for a selection, then get ready to enjoy an excellent tasting experience. You’ll find Vestal in Lafayette, Louisiana, in an intimate, romantic space with dim lighting and stylish decor, so grab a creative cocktail like “girls & cigars” or “oxford comma” from the bar before you settle in for your meal.
Johnson’s Boucanière
$ | (337) 269-8878 | WEBSITE

Johnson’s Boucanière lets meat be meat. It’s a BBQ joint that doesn’t rely on gimmicky sauces to try to convince you that mediocre cuts are just as good as quality barbecue. Instead, they know that a plate of brisket smoked over hickory can, in fact, trigger the same primal satisfaction as any backyard cookout. Just know that by ordering here, you’ll be committing to generous portions that feel a little bit like a carnivorous celebration.
At around $15 a plate, it’s one of the more affordable BBQ spots in town—barely more than a movie ticket.
El Burrito Loco
$ | (337) 303-4388 | WEBSITE

El Burrito Loco has come a long way from its humble origin as a popular spot inside a convenience store serving traditional Honduran food. Now, they’re a quintessential destination for Latin cuisine, still in Lafayette, but with a reputation that extends far beyond their modest setting. Their claim to fame may have been the amazing baleadas with thick handmade tortillas, but there’s a strong menu of tasty items like the lean and delicious barbacoa taco.
The food is of good quality, though on the pricier side, with burritos running around $12-15 and tacos at $4-5 each. The staff is sweet, and everything is made fresh to order, so be prepared for a bit of a wait. Whether you’re ending your search for a great burrito or exploring Honduran specialties, this is the place, even if the décor is simple with basic seating and fluorescent lighting typical of a convenience store setup.
Jane’s French Cuisine
$$$$ | (337) 534-0442 | WEBSITE

Jane’s French Cuisine is a French restaurant from a passionate owner who cooks and personally ensures each dish reflects tradition. Start with the incredible soup—it’s one of our favorite soups in town—then move on to heartier portions from the classic French menu, including the A5 Wagyu and pheasant pot pie. It’s an intimate and cozy space with a special atmosphere, but not in a way that ever feels too formal. Show up with a date or for a truly special night out.
The menu is made up of astonishing dishes, and you’ll want to experience as many of them as you can.
Lagneaux’s
$$ | (337) 984-1415 | WEBSITE

The buffet at Lagneaux’s has developed a cult-like following, due in equal parts to the well-seasoned dishes, the attentive service from staff like Mark and Kyra, and something called a welcoming atmosphere. What’s a welcoming atmosphere, you might ask? It’s a feeling, which basically just means that they probably don’t even know how to bottle it. What we do know is that it’s comfortable, professional, a little lively, and we’d soak it in all day if we could.
Come here for the buffet, but stay for the efficient service and fantastic dining experience that manages to feel valued even on busy days like Valentine’s Day.
Somewheres Else Bar and Grill
$ | (337) 534-8357 | WEBSITE

Somewheres Else Bar and Grill is one of Lafayette’s favorite spots for late-night eats, and their welcoming atmosphere makes them perfect for winding down after a long day out. Regardless of the hour, Somewheres Else has made a name for themselves by offering a variety of home-cooked meals from their late-night grill.
There are a lot of options here—all of them comforting—but you should definitely make the cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and entertainment like pool tables and a great jukebox a part of your experience.
Marcello’s
$$ | (337) 235-1002 | WEBSITE

Tucked away from the main drag, Marcello’s is one of the most reliable Italian spots in Lafayette. It’s situated just far enough from the downtown bustle to feel like a proper escape for a relaxed dinner or a cozy date night, yet the vibe is warm and inviting enough to make it a go-to for celebratory meals with friends.
Whether you’re diving into their classic pasta dishes or exploring the seafood options, you’ll definitely want to save room for the bread and olive oil dipping sauce—just don’t expect them to skimp on the portions when they bring it out.
KOK Wings & Things
$ | (337) 706-5094 | WEBSITE

KOK Wings & Things has been Lafayette’s go-to dive for wings and late-night cravings since it first fired up its fryers. With its laid-back vibe and the constant aroma of sizzling chicken, it always feels like the ultimate neighborhood hangout, but with unique wing flavors like Sum Nasty and Brucial alongside perfectly seasoned fries.
The wings are great, but the fast, friendly service transforms KOK from a simple wing spot into a casual restaurant worth braving a crowded parking lot on a cool evening for a generous portion of comfort food.
