With the greatest respect to the other dining spots in New Braunfels, Sal-O-Mon Family Restaurant is this part of Texas’s #1 destination, whether you’re passing by or on a special trip. Spud Ranch is a true gem in New Braunfels and we can safely say it’s one of the best comfort food spots you can find in Texas. Their thing is, quite simply, loaded baked potatoes. And when a baked potato is enormous and fluffy and flavor-packed, like it is here, it’s simply one of the best things in the world.
You can choose from generous toppings – the brisket spud and chicken enchilada baked potato are our favourites – and pair with jalapeño poppers, Mac & cheese, or the superb Frito Pie Baked Potato. It’s available for dine-in with quick, friendly service, though parking can be limited due to its location.

Despite its name, you’ll want to eat a lot more than just the tacos from this spot in New Braunfels. And once you look at the menu, you will end up ordering a lot more. Virtually every dish is delicious, from the bean and cheese tacos with their double tortilla, to the parrillada sizzling platter that serves all the sides for groups.
The al pastor tacos are of course lovely – with the tender marinated pork particularly good – and there’s also a very good (and value-packed) sirloin or chicken taco special. The salsa bar offers several kinds of salsa in varying heats, along with jalapeños and sliced cucumber, and the flower and corn tortillas are never doughy or too thick.
With prices under $20 for a full meal and friendly staff who speak Spanish creating a welcoming atmosphere, it’s a favorite stop before heading back to Austin.
The Gruene Door

The Gruene Door is serving up wonderful meals in New Braunfels and it’s the best thing to happen to this Texas town since people started genuinely appreciating perfectly cooked salmon. Expect exceptional dishes – from the risotto and peas appetizer that’s a highlight, to main courses like filet prepared to perfection, or the short rib sandwich that’s received plenty of praise. Whatever you choose, all of it comes with consistently efficient and attentive service.
We love Collin and Christine, who go out of their way to ensure guests are well taken care of, and so will you. Just know the online menu might not reflect current offerings, but the cozy atmosphere and commitment to memorable dining remain.
