As Palo Alto’s tech innovators seek midday fuel between breakthroughs, the city serves up Silicon Valley’s most inventive dining. From discreet spots you’ll guard like trade secrets to celebratory power-lunch venues—plus one that bans laptops outright—here are our updated 2026 favorites.
Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant
$$ | (650) 329-0665 | WEBSITE

Buca di Beppo is the kind of family-friendly Italian spot you go to when you have zero intentions of counting calories. The menu has everything from fresh bruschetta in a giant martini glass and a simple ravioli to a huge chicken carbonara you can make leftovers out of. We’re not totally sure how to categorize this place, so we’ll just call it what it is: a feast. Service is helpful and attentive too.
Hobee’s
$ | (650) 856-6124 | WEBSITE

You’ll find Hobee’s in a cozy corner of Palo Alto, where the popular breakfast and brunch spot is operating with a cool California vibe that feels very homely. It doesn’t look like a fancy restaurant, but override your hesitation and you’ll find a diverse menu with fresh-tasting food. Our favorite is the chorizo sweet potato hash, a standout dish with a well-balanced mix of sweet, spicy, and umami flavors.
It has a generous portion—but what really makes this meal are the warm, fluffy blueberry coffee cakes that contrast so well with the savory dishes.
Como Esta Taqueria
$ | (650) 321-1517 | WEBSITE

This Mexican taqueria in Palo Alto is a nice place to eat lunch outside. Their outdoor area is spacious and laid out over a stretch of pavement, so you can feel like you’re having a little fiesta. This place is equal parts taqueria and hidden gem, and you can certainly come just for a taco. But if you did that, you’d be missing out on one of the better birria tacos in the Bay area.
YAYOI Palo Alto
$$ | (650) 494-4437 | WEBSITE

A welcoming Japanese spot that’s family-friendly, efficient, and consistently satisfying is rare in Palo Alto. But YAYOI is exactly that kind of restaurant, which is probably why you will absolutely want to grab one of those booths near the windows at this elevated casual dining spot. It will, however, be very worth it. If you’re here with a friend, get the wagyu sukiyaki to share. It’s a beautifully presented hot pot with tender beef and vegetables for about $28.
It always makes us glad we decided to enjoy the calming interior with its tall ceiling and adequate lighting.
Celia’s Mexican Restaurant
$$ | (650) 843-0643 | WEBSITE

Yes, it’s a Mexican spot. But boy is it generous. Celia’s Mexican Restaurant in Palo Alto is a culturally vibrant restaurant that’s as lively as the day it opened—and with good reason. It reliably serves up huge portions every damn time. We love the Steak Fajitas with all the fixings. It’s sizzling, flavorful, and the meat-to-pepper-to-onion ratio was probably determined with a measuring cup.
There’s truly something for everyone on the menu: Lobster Enchiladas, shrimp cocktail, or amazing flan for dessert. It’s perfect for dinner with friends or picky family members who want to indulge a bit.
Sweet Maple
$$ | (650) 521-0764 | WEBSITE

By now, most Palo Alto residents have experienced the delight of Sweet Maple’s candied bacon. But their breakfast spot in the heart of town amplifies everything: the dining area feels twice as spacious, and the service moves so quickly it should drop the “quick” because it’s lightning fast. The restaurant maintains a cozy yet polished vibe, with warm wood accents, bright morning light streaming through large windows, and comfortable booth seating.
Nothing on their signature menu has changed, but the flavors seem even more vibrant here. You order at the counter, grab a number, find a table, and they’ll deliver your meal to you. Much like its reputation suggests, the place is consistently bustling and deservedly so. We’ve declared Sweet Maple the best breakfast spot in Palo Alto, and that’s absolutely still true for this location.
Ramen Kowa
$$ | (650) 326-8640 | WEBSITE

Ramen Kowa is a Japanese spot where the menu offers ramen with rich broth and tender noodles. Between bites, your bowl will tell the story of a satisfying meal—with swirls of savory tonkotsu broth, a scattering of fresh bamboo shoots, and drops of soy-marinated egg. You’re coming here for a comforting, flavorful, and casual bowl—which you’ll get whether you order the hearty chicken ramen or the crispy vegetable tempura.
Finish your indulgent lunch with the matcha bingsu that’s light, fluffy, and served in a towering glass. As any true ramen shop would, they keep things cozy with a mix of traditional and modern decor, so don’t expect a rushed experience.
Verve Coffee Roasters
$ | (831) 440-3978 | WEBSITE

This welcoming coffee spot keeps it simple, straightforward, and makes the best matcha latte in Palo Alto (bold claim, we know). You’re going to want to come here on a sunny day for their outdoor seating area, where you can enjoy that matcha latte with a side of monkey bread for under $10. Another thing worth getting on the table: the exceptional cappuccino served with a cozy atmosphere.
Driftwood Deli & Market
$ | (650) 493-4162 | WEBSITE

It’s a deli, market, snack haven, and community hub. If it was next to a hardware store, it’d be the perfect place to fuel up before tackling weekend projects. Grab a tuna salad sandwich to-go for a quick lunch on the run. Or settle in and get the dutch crunch with all the fixings (we like how they never skimp on the fillings) and a bag of chips for a proper meal. It’s also not a bad place to linger, as long as you’re not distracted by the tempting display of the BEST selection of snacks.
Driftwood Deli & Market really has something for everyone, minus the power tools. We still recommend the hardware store for that.
GK Pastry
$ | (650) 209-2511 | WEBSITE

If you are in Palo Alto and in the mood for pastry in any form, get in the car and drive to GK Pastry. There isn’t necessarily a specialty here. It’s one of those bakeries that just does everything deliciously, and you should leave with at least three things you didn’t plan on ordering. Those things could include a jar cake, tomato focaccia, or a couple of Olive/Parmesan sourdough loaves.
Scoop
$$ | (650) 384-6939 | WEBSITE

This casual ice cream shop in downtown Palo Alto is perfect for a quick treat after work. There’s a patio for enjoying your scoop outdoors and a counter for ordering if you’re tired of the office chatter and want to grab something solo. Our favorite thing to order here is the Scoopalicious. It comes with graham crackers mixed in, plus a fresh waffle cone. The milkshakes aren’t too memorable, but the ice cream is creamy and so flavorful it makes the whole trip worthwhile.
Protégé
$$$$ | (650) 494-4181 | WEBSITE

One of our favorite spots for a special occasion in Palo Alto is Protégé. You can sit in the ala carte lounge with its relaxed, welcoming ambiance or enjoy the attentive service that makes every meal memorable. You can order from their exceptional tasting menu, but the A5 wagyu and 10 layer lasagna is why we come here. It’s perfectly cooked wagyu with rich lasagna layers, tender duck confit, pomegranate, and brussel sprouts that create great textures.
It comes with a side of milk bread that we like to use for soaking up every last bit of sauce special-occasion style.
