$ | (804) 263-3218 | WEBSITE

Head to this Dunkin’ for fresh donuts, perfect coffee, and morning service that’s always cheerful and efficient. Hunt Brothers Pizza
$ | (804) 794-2929 | WEBSITE

Hunt Brothers Pizza makes pizza good enough to be your last meal on earth. With a convenient location inside the local Marathon gas station, you could grab a quick snack on the go (except when they’re closed, which is rare). Plus, after diving into a medium-sized pizza with generous toppings and no extra cost for add-ons, you won’t have the energy to get up anyway.
Come here for a satisfying meal when you need something fast and tasty, or for a breakfast pizza while a message of love for God greets you on the box.
Angela’s Italian Ristorante
$ | (804) 598-3781 | WEBSITE

We’re basically in a committed relationship with Angela’s Italian Ristorante in Powhatan. The Wednesday night live music has become the soundtrack to our week, the family photos and Italian memorabilia on the walls now decorate our phone background, and we’re considering asking the chef to marry us after devouring a plate of their amazing Ribeye.
This cozy Italian spot has warm lighting, a welcoming bar area where you can grab a drink, and plenty of tables where you can enjoy their killer pizza or baked spaghetti. It’s our new go-to for a family dinner or weeknight meal when all we want is fresh Italian food cooked to order.
1933 Public House
$$ | (804) 372-6349 | WEBSITE

With updated country chic choices on the menu, your meal at 1933 Public House can be filled with everything from crispy fish and chips to the highly recommended Pig & Fig Flatbread. Like most welcoming restaurants in the area, there’s a lively main bar room full of tasty burgers or generous portions with approachable simplicity. The covered patio and modern fresh atmosphere make us feel like we’re at the best-feeling date night spot of our lives.
Starbucks
$ | (804) 635-5340 | WEBSITE

We often start our mornings craving a coffee that feels as comforting as a warm hug. If you understand, make your way to Starbucks. They brew classics like lattes, cappuccinos, and americanos that you can customize with oat milk, vanilla syrup, or whipped cream. But it’s their consistent service that really shows off this location’s tendency to go above and beyond (in the best way). The friendly staff like Reghan and Rhonda are our favorite part of the experience.
They remember names, get orders right, and make sure every customer feels well taken care of. Each visit is reliably pleasant, efficient, and has everything that makes a neighborhood coffee shop so great—but with that signature Starbucks polish.
Allen’s Chinese Restaurant
$ | (804) 403-3336 | WEBSITE

Chinese takeout is not one-fried-rice-fits-all. There are some where flavor purists come to get authentic Szechuan heat, and some where busy families rely on reliable delivery and generous portions to get them through the week. Out in rural Powhatan is both, and a lot more.
The straightforward operation comes from a team focused on friendly service, and the kitchen serves satisfying Americanized Chinese classics with consistency: think steaming Governor chicken with just the right kick for dinner, and seafood dishes and crab dumplings for special occasions. Place an order, the complimentary pickled cucumbers (our favorite), and appreciate the hot, tasty food that arrives promptly.
MABEL’S
$ | (804) 598-5344 | WEBSITE

MABEL’S is a family-friendly spot in a Powhatan strip mall serving things like burgers, sandwiches, pimento burgers, 1934 cheeseburgers, and some of the best ice cream creations in town. And with a clean indoor seating area and a patio out back, you can have a front-row seat to kids enjoying their shakes while parents relax over a casual meal.
Wildwood Bar-B-Que
$ | (804) 372-9574 | WEBSITE

There are a few reasons why this spot is a must-try, and it’s not just the fall-apart ribs and fantastic house barbecue sauce. It’s the only place in town that serves classic barbecue fare with such consistent quality under new ownership. In fact, the improvements are so noticeable that people wait in lines just to get their hands on it. When you’re craving comfort food, stop by for the pulled pork sandwich we’ve dreamed of since our first visit.
Fine Creek Brewing Company
$$ | (804) 372-9786 | WEBSITE

If you’ve been to Fine Creek Brewing Company in Powhatan, then you already know it serves an impressive ‘Pastrami Sammy’ that is truly amazing. Plus, the beer selection is mesmerizing, with a variety of flavors from Fine Creek and other local breweries. The staff, led by Daniel, provide phenomenal customer service that makes guests want to return.
The venue has a beautiful garden with a fire pit and Adirondack chairs, making it an ideal spot to relax and unwind—even if you show up with your entire family.
Osaka Hibachi & Sushi
$ | (804) 372-6807 | WEBSITE

Osaka Hibachi & Sushi is part-Japanese hibachi spot, part-sushi counter, and a quick and easy option whether you want to grab a reliable takeout meal or enjoy a family dinner. The hibachi plates are perfect for sharing and feature everything from Teriyaki Shrimp to Teriyaki Salmon. No matter what you do, don’t leave without trying the Yum Yum sauce. You can pretend the generous portions are meant for two meals, even though there’s a 0% chance you’ll actually have leftovers.
Frisby’s Restaurant
$ | (804) 794-7553 | WEBSITE

Frisby’s Restaurant in Powhatan is a family-friendly spot that always smells like fried catfish and spicy wings. Open for lunch and dinner, it’s an easy place to grab a satisfying meal with the Carolina Reaper wings, tender and juicy catfish platter, or a generous portion of nachos. But the catfish platter is really the headliner.
Get it with sides of coleslaw, fries, or hushpuppies for about $18, served in a cozy dining room with wooden booths and friendly, if sometimes unhurried, service that keeps regulars coming back for the reliable American fare.
Maxey’s Store

If you tried to sample every hidden gem in rural Virginia, it would take a season of weekend trips just to uncover the treasures. But the first and most essential stop on that journey is Maxey’s Store. It’s a charming local spot that’s perfect for a casual lunch or group gathering and serves generous portions of smash burgers and reubens. Prioritize the standout items, like the amazing tacos and the queso dip that should be bottled.
Just know that it’s cozy and some meals feel pricey since sandwiches don’t include sides, so consider adding chips or fries and bring cash just in case.
County Seat Restaurant & Gathering Place
$ | (804) 598-5000 | WEBSITE

County Seat makes incredible pistachio almond coconut cake served in generous slices, fried chicken with serious crunch, and breakfast buffets that are hot, fresh, and satisfying. The Powhatan dining room doesn’t look like much—it’s possible you’ll be the only person inside who isn’t a local regular—but it’s easily the best place to eat country cooking in Virginia.
El Jinete Mexican Grill
$ | (804) 924-2142 | WEBSITE

You might recall the Mexican spots that used to dot Powhatan (there were several around since the early 2000s). But El Jinete Mexican Grill has become the go-to, and we’re happy to say the food and reliable service are now worth driving out for. We love the enchiladas Norteñas, which layer tender chicken, melted cheese, and a rich red sauce under a blanket of more cheese.
The Chili Verde is a standout, but all these plates are generous, slightly rich from the cooking, and have a notably satisfying depth. You’ll be content whether you have your takeout order ready in 15 minutes or sit in the cozy, warmly lit dining room, and it’ll taste just as good on a Tuesday as it does on a Saturday night.
