Who doesn’t love a great meal in Rahway? We’ll wait. Unless you’re just opposed to life’s delicious discoveries, then you’re rightly all over these vibrant, flavor-packed spots. Whether for date night or family dinner, classic Italian or modern fusion, tucked in historic buildings or shining with contemporary style, these are the best restaurants in the entire city.
Ming Feng Chinese Restaurant
$ | (732) 499-8499 | WEBSITE

If you haven’t tried Ming Feng Chinese Restaurant in Rahway, get there soon—either right when they open or before the evening crowd pours in. They have a solid lineup of classic dishes—you’ll see plates of steaming fried rice and lo mein coming out of the kitchen constantly—and everything is worth digging into. But since we’re picking standouts, go for the incredibly savory General Tso chicken, the pork fried rice with real smoked pork, or the house lo mein.
Order the combination platters, they come with generous portions that leave you fully satisfied after every bite. This restaurant also offers takeout and delivery if you need a reliable meal for a cozy night in. And while other spots have come and gone nearby, this Rahway gem remains our top choice.
Michelino’s Pizzeria Rahway NJ
$ | (732) 396-9229 | WEBSITE

Rahway’s bustling downtown has a cozy corner where locals flock for exceptional pizza. That’s the perfect spot to enjoy some delicious slices from Michelino’s Pizzeria, located right in the heart of the action. Come during the lunch rush, when the energy is contagious. And dig into a slice of their buffalo chicken pizza—this creative pie checks off multiple flavor profiles with its tangy sauce, tender chicken, and perfectly melted cheese.
We also like to round out our meal with their garlic knots and refreshing red sangria.
Melao Cafe & Creamery
$ | (732) 215-4942 | WEBSITE

Melao Cafe & Creamery is another charming, cozy spot here to desensitize us to the daily grind that modern life makes us endure. But you’re not here to solve existential dilemmas, you’re here to fill your table with their delightful selection of rolled ice cream, a few coffee drinks, croissants, and specialties like their awesome strawberry matcha latte iced.
The billowy soft yet rich chocolate strawberry nutella almonds rolled ice cream is the star here—one serving is sufficient for a whole treat. We also love this place because they offer vegan options and plant-based protein, so you can enjoy their delicious blueberry ice cream with peanut butter in the comfort of your own dietary preferences.
Brooklyn Pizza
$ | (732) 499-0049 | WEBSITE

We stumbled upon Brooklyn Pizza in Rahway during a casual drive around town. Don’t let the modest storefront deceive you, this cozy pizzeria with its warm, inviting atmosphere consistently draws a crowd and serves some of the most authentic Brooklyn slices in New Jersey. Our go-to order here is the Spinach Feta pie. These slices are heartier than your average pizza, and one slice is quite satisfying, but it’s tough to stop at just one. The crust is perfectly crisp with just the right chew.
But if you’re a traditionalist, try the Margherita, and pair it with the Jersey Wings Mild to balance the meal. The extremely friendly staff take pride in their top-quality pizza, and it shows.
Stewart’s Drive-In
$ | (732) 388-2080 | WEBSITE

Don’t let the drive-in name fool you. Beyond serving classic burgers and hot dogs, Stewart’s offers a standout Philly Swiss cheese steak that’s worth the trip. Since this roadside spot doesn’t have indoor seating, everything is served fresh to your car or at picnic-style tables outside. Try our favorites—the juicy cheese steak, crispy twister fries, and a frosty root beer—which are all cooked to order and satisfyingly hearty. Just one combo platter can easily fill up a hungry appetite.
Simply pull up to the order board, which features clear menu descriptions, before parking at one of the car hop spots or grabbing an outdoor table. Since Stewart’s is a classic roadside destination, it gets lively on sunny weekends, especially with families and kids enjoying the fun atmosphere.
Mr. Rice
$ | (732) 388-8001 | WEBSITE

Mr. Rice has all the makings of a perfect takeout night, greeting you with the warm aroma of sizzling woks, a counter of friendly faces, and quick, efficient service. Start with the fried chicken wings, as you’ll want to savor their legendary crunch while you weigh the menu’s sizable selection of Chinese classics. These wings maintain their crispiness like no other in town.
If you’re stuck, get the cashew chicken, the general tso chicken, which has just the right sweet-spicy balance, and the decadent bourbon chicken. The szechuan fried rice is another solid choice, served with fresh veggies that complement the flavorful rice. If sharing these dishes wasn’t satisfying enough, the honey chicken nicely wraps up your meal, though some might suggest asking for reduced sodium to let the natural flavors shine through.
Madina Halal Platter
$ | (732) 381-8900 | WEBSITE

The menu at this Rahway location mirrors what you’d find at their Paterson food truck—and not toned down for suburban palates. While Madina is better known for their chicken and rice platter, don’t overlook the shrimp with special shrimp sauce. It comes in a generous portion with perfectly cooked shrimp, and you can either get it with spicy rice or in a family platter, which will satisfy a hungry group in minutes.
The sitting area is modest, so many people come here for takeout orders (you can find street parking on Main Street or use the municipal lot behind the building). Look for the homemade white sauce on the counter, then look for us, digging into the best baklava around.
Wholly Cow
$ | (732) 669-7925 | WEBSITE

The cozy cafe in downtown Rahway opened this sweet spot years ago, when it quickly became a local favorite. And rightfully so thanks to a handful of phenomenal gelato options—some, like the amazing mint chocolate chip or the banana dulce de leche, that you won’t find in many other places. Get it in a freshly made waffle cone for that sturdy, crack-resistant experience, or try it as an affogato for extra richness.
Since the waffle cones are made in-house (a brief wait that is absolutely worth it), complement your order with a quicker treat like a warm cookie or muffin, or the popular pistachio gelato topped generously with whipped cream. The friendly staff provides helpful recommendations, and with street parking available near the train station, plus the modern space open late with occasional live Jazz on Fridays, it’s a perfect spot to relax or treat yourself.
La Malinche
$ | (732) 382-9550 | WEBSITE

Yes, you should come in for the enchiladas verde or cubano sandwich, but real La Malinche fans know to also ask about the fried rice with beef, chicken, and shrimp, which isn’t on their main menu. The menu features generously stuffed tacos in a variety of fillings, and half a dozen varieties of homestyle Spanish soul food (order the fajitas mixta).
With several cozy tables and fast kitchen service, this is a wise choice for a group dinner, when you can fill your table with chips and salsa and add specialties like the flavorful green sauce or delicious elote. La Malinche’s quality and refusal to water-down dishes for Rahway make it comparable, if not better, than a lot of places in New Jersey.
Firehouse Eatery & Pub
$$ | (732) 382-9500 | WEBSITE

Don’t let the occasional wait for food fool you into thinking the experience is anything less than warm and welcoming here. Firehouse Eatery & Pub isn’t false advertising. Real friendly staff expertly craft comfort food in a family-like atmosphere. Be sure to get the tasty garlic clams or the Delmonico Steak cooked just right. Afterward, enjoy the creative decorations, especially during holidays like St. Patrick’s Day, and then soak in the inviting environment.
Kids also love this Rahway pub since it offers a decent selection of vegetarian and some vegan options to please everyone.
IL FORNO A LEGNA
$ | (732) 382-6600 | WEBSITE

Tucked away in a typical Rahway storefront, this pizza joint might appear an improbable destination for authentic New York-style pies, generous toppings and steaming hot portions. Yet, Il Forno A Legna masterfully bridges that gap—and satisfies our appetites. The cozy restaurant consistently draws a crowd, but fortunately for us, we never face a lengthy wait. The essential order is the veggie pizza with customizable toppings, each slice loaded with fresh ingredients.
Round out your meal by selecting from their hearty Italian classics. We’re always eager for a plate of their rich and savory lasagna, meatballs with robust sauce, and Shrimp Parmigiana with a crispy coating.
Jersey Boys Kitchen (Halal)
$ | (732) 381-7711 | WEBSITE

Regulars love Jersey Boys Kitchen (this Rahway spot and others in the area) because the food is fantastic and there’s a counter window that lets you watch the chef assemble fresh pizzas to order. Newcomers become fans because they can order like a kid in a candy store—with crispy chicken, lamb gyro meals, empanadas, and beef patties. We like to come here for the show-stopping chicken parm.
It comes with a perfectly crispy coating that stays crunchy even under the sauce, and the chicken is juicy enough you don’t need extra cheese they sometimes offer with it. The dining area at Jersey Boys is modest and never feels crowded, so we’re always able to find a table.
La Chula Tex-Mex
$$ | (732) 827-7652 | WEBSITE

This Rahway establishment marks a vibrant addition to the local Tex-Mex scene. While the queso birria tacos are the main attraction, they also have a nice selection of flavorful chicken tacos, which should be on your table. Think: perfectly cooked tacos packed with flavor and balanced heat from the red and green sauce paired with their great drinks to complement the meal.
Round out your experience with their happy hour menu and warm sips of their palate-pleasing beverages in the cozy, lively atmosphere.
Nancy’s Towne House
$ | (732) 388-8100 | WEBSITE

Like many classic corner bars, Nancy’s Towne House has a straightforward menu that feels both familiar and satisfying. Just start off with the shareable calamari or mozzarella sticks (in the appetizer section of the menu). And make sure you find your way to the bar since you may need something to wash down those crispy bar pies. These pepperoni pizzas aren’t playing around here—they come with paper-thin crusts that hide the generous layer of toppings.
Even if we find the basement atmosphere a bit musty, the food is still so deeply satisfying we can’t stop eating it.
