West Haven’s shoreline never stops evolving. If you haven’t visited since last summer, you’ll likely find another new eatery where a vacant storefront once stood. And honestly, it’s tired to dismiss this coastal town, even though some folks make scoffing at it their favorite pastime. But truly, it’s just a place where you can stroll the boardwalk, savor some of Connecticut’s most exciting coastal cuisine, and maybe catch a sunset over Long Island Sound.
Duffy’s Tavern
$ | (203) 933-9721 | WEBSITE

We usually wouldn’t recommend a pub with a location in a strip mall, but Duffy’s Tavern would be worth going to for its parking alone. It’s in a low, brick building that sits directly behind the lot, with a patio where you can stare out at the asphalt (a slightly better view than the dumpster and a Verizon store). Plus, every visit has its own menu, giving you a more exciting Duffy’s experience than you get elsewhere.
You can still get the classics like the Shepherds Pie and the Irish Coffee you’ve already had 826 times in your life, but now you can also opt for some Ahi tuna salad on the casual main floor, homemade rice pudding and Duffy hotdog on the wooden table booths, or cold fries at the bar.
Nick’s Luncheonette
$ | (203) 937-9036 | WEBSITE

Yes, West Haven has plenty of chain restaurants and fast-food joints these days, with strip malls popping up everywhere. But we’ve also kept gems like Nick’s Luncheonette, somewhere you can grab a classic breakfast, enjoy friendly service, and watch families share meals in that perfect diner atmosphere. You’ll have to arrive early to beat the morning rush, but that’s when you want to be for some first-rate pancakes and eggs—if you want a fancy brunch, this is not the place.
The portions can be a little much (see: their s’mores French toast piled high with marshmallows), but it’s sort of impossible not to leave satisfied here. Especially when digging into a plate of two eggs over easy with crispy hash browns or their Nick’s Hearty Breakfast with all the fixings.
Charcoal Chicken
$$ | (203) 934-2682 | WEBSITE

A long-standing local favorite, the welcoming Charcoal Chicken serves up a concise menu filled with near-perfect examples of authentic, homemade-style cooking. Think tender rotisserie chicken with crispy skin, arroz con pollo bursting with rich flavors, and fried yucca with just the right crunch. They’re pretty serious about service here, too, as they’ve got consistently friendly and charismatic staff, with waitress Vanessa providing exceptional attention.
We love to come here on a Friday evening with a friend who knows how to share, post up at one of the wheelchair-accessible tables, and go ham on a medio pollo platter with those hit beans and a couple of tostones. While the prices run around $18-25 for main dishes, the quality of the food and the pleasant atmosphere make it well worth the visit.
Ilforno Ristorante Italiano
$$ | (203) 488-0573 | WEBSITE

Stepping into Ilforno Ristorante Italiano, a West Haven spot for game-watching and hearty Italian fare, you might think you left the quiet Connecticut streets and landed in a bustling neighborhood trattoria. Sports play on screens around the dining room, and the scent of garlic and tomatoes hangs warmly in the air.
The star of the extensive menu is their homemade gnocchi, pillowy clouds of potato dough that arrive in generous portions, whether you opt for the classic version or the gnocchi Della casa crowned with tender calamari. But don’t skip the shrimp marinara with linguine, where plump shrimp swim in a vibrant, garlicky tomato sauce that clings perfectly to the pasta. The spicy calamari brings a welcome kick, though it’s worth ordering cautiously if you’re heat-averse.
You can get the pizza two ways: with a classic red sauce, or, our favorite, the white pizza layered with broccoli and garlic, its decent crust crisp and topped with fresh ingredients. Stuffed breads, oozing with cheese and herbs, are excellent for sharing. Service is terrific and friendly, making the scratch food feel worth much more than the reasonable price—a great value for a tasty, satisfying meal.
Coffee Haven West
$ | (203) 932-0755 | WEBSITE

We’d gladly wait in line on a rainy Monday morning for one of the lattes from Coffee Haven West. If you’re familiar with the original location, you won’t find any major changes here: cozy atmosphere, excellent coffee, and that epic decor. But the downsized space means you might actually find a seat slightly easier. Come during their morning hours to get one of the delicious lattes with perfect foam.
The coffee is rich, the atmosphere is welcoming, and you’ll be back to wait in line again within the week.
EAST HAVEN VILLAGE FAMILY RESTAURANT
$ | (203) 469-5759 | WEBSITE

Whether you’re in town doing big-time adult job stuff at the convention center, or just feel like rounding up a ton of your friends to gorge on classic diner fare, come to East Haven Village Family Restaurant. The restaurant serves generous family-style meals, which means for a reasonable price, you’ll have friendly staff bringing over plates of comfort food to your table—think perfectly cooked chicken fried steak, fluffy eggs, crispy home fries, and even a solid burger with fries.
There’s a simple salad option that’s an extra add-on, but it’s worth it for some fresh greens to balance things out. Shell out for a bottomless coffee on the expense account, while you’re at it. We call that team building, right?
Prospect Beach House Deli & Market
$ | (203) 932-5550 | WEBSITE

The breakfast selection at Prospect Beach House is outstanding enough for this to be a destination in its own right—especially for anyone who’s moved past actually eating boring cereal. Hit the counter or head out to the excellent picnic tables for a generous Scottish Breakfast or a Bangin’ Breakfast Burrito. The lunch items like clam chowder, avocado toast, and ice cream are available whether you dine in or take it to-go.
They also do specials like an incredible breakfast sandwich with gooey cheese and perfect eggs and a New England Clam Chowder that’s all we want to eat with the view of the nearby beach.
Saray Turkish Restaurant
$$ | (203) 937-0707 | WEBSITE

This is one of the top spots in West Haven, and we’re thrilled it’s been serving the community for years. Saray Turkish Restaurant does authentic Turkish cuisine—with standout lamb dishes, cold dips like the eggplant, and perfectly seasoned chicken—all bursting with flavor. It’s a great place to enjoy a warm, welcoming atmosphere with clean, well-designed spaces, including a beautifully appointed bathroom.
Order the highly recommended Lentil Soup and chicken that guests rave about, and save room for their unique rice puddings and pastries. The staff provides fast, attentive service, checking on you often with kindness, making it ideal for an exceptional dining experience.
Paolo Ristorante
$$$ | (475) 209-9296 | WEBSITE

Paolo Ristorante might seem like it’s all about the cozy atmosphere. And sure, settling into their comfortable dining room during a festive evening is great, but the quality of the food tops that. Make a reservation for dinner when you want something special, relax in the welcoming space, and try the Branzino special that’s very flavorful and very high on our seafood power ranking.
The Chicken Milanese and eggplant with prosciutto appetizer are also musts, and the latter comes with a marinara sauce you’ll want to put on everything (OK, maybe besides the Veal Saltimbocca).
Andy’s Pizza Restaurant
$ | (203) 932-0022 | WEBSITE

When visitors imagine grabbing a slice in West Haven, they likely picture a cramped pizzeria with fluorescent lighting, served by people who look like they’d rather be anywhere else. Take them to Andy’s Pizza Restaurant for lunch and watch their expectations get pleasantly flipped. We rank this our fourteenth-best pizza spot in West Haven, but it’s one of the rare local dining experiences that doesn’t feel like you’re eating in a chain restaurant.
Instead, it’s a warm, straightforward place with counter service and plenty of seating to settle into while enjoying an excellent classic cheese pizza. The vegetarian options are solid, the tuna dish is surprisingly great, and the whole experience—from the ample parking to the kind, cordial staff—feels genuinely welcoming. At around $15-20 for a meal, it’s the kind of spot that makes you want to come back just for the atmosphere.
67 Family Diner
$ | (203) 828-6171 | WEBSITE

This cozy, bustling spot sits in Klarides Village, so it’s got major family-friendly energy—besides the welcoming vibe, the staff looks like they’re heading to a neighborhood barbecue when their shift is done. Order homemade chicken soup, delicious pancakes, crispy tenders, and fresh orange juice that’s bright and tangy.
Your best bet is to walk in and grab a seat at a booth or one of the tables where you can either snack and drink a coffee or have a full meal (and still enjoy that warm atmosphere).
Billie Martin’s
$ | WEBSITE

It can be tough to find a spot in West Haven where you can relax with friends without breaking the bank on drinks and food. If you’re looking for a laid-back place to grab a bite and enjoy some social time, head to Billie Martin’s. The atmosphere is exactly what you’d want for hanging out—it’s casual and inviting, with a live area that keeps things lively. The bartenders are attentive and make sure you’re well taken care of.
The burgers are excellent and satisfying, and the crispy tater tots are a must-try, along with the hand-cut fries if you ask for them. It’s the kind of place where you can unwind, have a good time, and leave feeling like you got your money’s worth.
Panda House
$ | (203) 933-2822 | WEBSITE

Dinner at Panda House feels like going to a party inside a familiar treasure chest. A giant golden menu (we’d say standard-size, but who knows what size menus are) presides over the space like the friendly server looking over your neighbor’s takeout order. Come here with your friends who appreciate the type of bonding that only happens over a large portion of Veggie Fried Rice for four.
The long counter that stretches through the space is the best seat in the house, for one very specific reason: it eventually morphs into a spring roll station where you can watch the familiar staff assemble them with consistent precision. We really like the Fried Chicken Wings, which are crispy and satisfying, and completely reasonable, with a sweet and tangy sauce.
The Kung Pao Chicken is a go-to, and the Spring Rolls are so fresh and crunchy with cabbage filling that you might think you don’t need the dipping sauce, but you would be very, very wrong.
Andini’s Restaurant
$$ | (203) 799-0200 | WEBSITE

This Italian gem is tucked away in West Haven, CT. And even though it’s a local favorite, it’s a really reliable spot for a group dinner when you want to enjoy some tasty drinks by the glass. The $48 family-style platter is a fantastic value where you’ll get a generous sampling of everything—we’re talking creamy White Bean and Escarole soup, rich Penne a la Vodka, and a big platter of their unique pizza loaded with toppings.
Hit this spot for a work celebration dinner, a post-game gathering, or just bring some friends who appreciate hearty Italian classics.
