Let’s get this straight: there’s no such thing as a bad sandwich shop in Mountain View. A great sandwich is always a good thing—a beacon promising fresh ingredients, creative combinations, and satisfaction for any Bay Area resident who’s ever craved something between two slices of bread. Also, the best sandwich shop is usually the one closest to your office. That said, some truly stand out. We’ve visited them all to bring you this definitive ranking.
Specialty’s Café & Bakery
$ | (415) 523-8992 | WEBSITE

All our Specialty’s locations feel like they’re tucked away in office parks, which is counterintuitive for a place that bakes with such heart. But the Mountain View spot is just down the road from the NASA base, and its genuine neighborhood vibe comes through. The casual exterior puts you in a relaxed mood before you even walk in, and the ample indoor and outdoor seating gives the space a welcoming community feel no matter where you settle. But the food is what sets this location apart.
They bake cookies like they mean it, the turkey pot pie soup is crafted with the care of a grandmother, and staff wordlessly slide water cups your way just as you feel the California sun on your neck. We could sit at those umbrella-shaded tables for hours watching people come and go, nibbling on wheat germ chocolate chip cookies, and chatting with event coordinators picking up group orders that inevitably smell absolutely delicious.
TBread
$ | (650) 336-7469 | WEBSITE

This spot feels more intimate than your typical sandwich shop, giving it that true neighborhood treasure sort of vibe. So expect to chat with a regular at the counter who’ll tell you the grilled pork banh mi is the one to get—and they’re absolutely right (the tender meat with that perfect combination of flavors is unforgettable). But TBread makes excellent use of its space.
It has a few cozy tables where a whole family can gather over those huge sandwiches and talk about how the vintage DragonBallZ sodas are a hit with the kids. It’s not overly hectic here, but it also gives off that welcoming, accessible feeling like discovering your new go-to lunch spot. The place is bright and clean, there are enough anime-themed drink bottles on display to open a small museum, and you can easily lose track of time after a Vietnamese coffee and those delicious spring rolls.
TOGO’S Sandwiches
$ | (650) 967-0514 | WEBSITE

This is the most spacious parking situation to ever exist at a sandwich shop (even better than downtown spots). The restaurant itself is perfect for quick lunches, but for the love of god, drive separately if you want—there’s plenty of room. Finding a spot is like playing a leisurely game of parking lot bingo. There’s all sorts of smiling, friendly waves, relaxed conversations, and surprisingly ample actual parking going on.
Luckily, it’s all visible from the clean interior, which makes for excellent people watching while you wait. But once you get past the equally organized counter (and maybe this is because of the friendly staff member standing ready to take your order), things are efficient. The main dining area is roomy, with plenty of tables that can accommodate really cozy groups. Even the seating by the window can fit four.
So come here for a satisfying meal and arrive with plenty of appetite and time to enjoy your sandwich.
Mendocino Farms
$ | (650) 209-3987 | WEBSITE

The number of yoga mats and protein shakers here on any given weekday is impressive. In our estimation, Mendocino Farms has the most convenient location—right in front of a 24-hour gym. But it’s not just the sight of sun-drenched patio tables that makes us swoon over this particular sandwich shop. It’s also the only one we’ve found that truly welcomes four-legged friends. But the outdoor seating, for some reason, is only available on sunny days.
So bring Fido, who’ll happily nap at your feet while you enjoy that crunchy Caesar salad with its creamy dressing. It was also the busiest spot when we called to check wait times during the lunch rush, so come early after your workout, or you’ll end up with (regrettable) leftovers from somewhere less exceptional.
Erik’s DeliCafé
$ | (650) 962-9191 | WEBSITE

We’ve sampled the pesto sauce from nearly every sandwich shop in the South Bay, and the version at Erik’s DeliCafé is the best. But we also discovered an entirely new favorite Erik’s order here: the simple ingredient sandwiches (not to be confused with the elaborate deli creations, gourmet paninis, or plain old sub sandwiches). And now, not unlike the immaculate tables displayed throughout the dining area, we’re hooked on them.
But another thing we enjoy about this Erik’s is the well-cared-for environment—the perfect place to sit at a clean booth that looks like it was maintained with daily attention while enjoying a hassle-free meal under bright, cheerful lighting. Plus, it’s consistently pleasant and quite a bit more relaxing than other locations. It’s also where you’ll find the helpful staff counter, connected to the catering service next door.
Ike’s Love & Sandwiches
$ | (650) 386-6469 | WEBSITE

The Mountain View Ike’s is a solid baseline Ike’s. The sandwiches, service, atmosphere—it’s all par for the course in terms of Ike’s expectations. There’s also a colorful, playful interior with puns and jokes everywhere, so even if it’s busy you don’t have to stress about whether or not you’re getting a great sandwich while you polish off a Pee Wee on perfect sourdough.
The one thing that does make this location a little unique (other than the friendly, welcoming staff who bring food quickly) is its standout vegetarian and vegan options, which are consistently praised. So keep this one in mind for grabbing an amazing sandwich on a particularly lovely afternoon.
Sourdough & Co.
$ | (650) 282-5032 | WEBSITE

Sourdough & Co. isn’t the fanciest spot, tucked away in a Safeway shopping center, which makes this feel more like a quick lunch place than a destination dinner. This probably explains the surprisingly large amount of search results for the keywords “Sourdough & Co. sandwich.” So maybe stick to lunch if you’re trying to have a reasonably calm meal—although the food here was actually pretty solid, especially the French dip sandwich meal.
So maybe just come to this one if you want a reliably good sandwich in a clean, bright space. Still, while this might not be our favorite sandwich shop, it is, in fact, a Sourdough & Co. And is that ever a bad thing?
