While sushi bars have become ubiquitous in every strip mall, the truly exceptional ones still transport you to Tokyo’s Tsukiji market. Ellicott City offers remarkable diversity, from minimalist omakase counters where chefs slice fish with samurai precision, to lively izakayas where spicy tuna rolls meet craft cocktails. For sushi so sublime it’s worth maxing out your credit card and ignoring your mercury intake, here are our top picks.
Sushi Q6 Normandy
$ | (443) 833-2691 | WEBSITE

Sushi Q6 Normandy in Ellicott City offers a reliable menu of sushi favorites (the crunchy Special Crunch roll, the spicy Angry Raven, the classic California roll) but I always get the same thing: the lunch special of three rolls for around $16, which are consistently fresh, and flavorful enough to keep you satisfied until your plate’s empty. They come with your choice of side—I like the salmon teriyaki or miso soup—and ginger and wasabi for dipping.
Ask for the accommodating staff’s recommendations, and order a green tea, even during the busy lunch rush.
Sakura Japanese Steak, Seafood House & Sushi Bar
$$ | (410) 203-0755 | WEBSITE

The hibachi fire show is a perfect example of the entertaining dining that happens at Sakura, a lively but well-kept Japanese steakhouse in Ellicott City. The performance is a hybrid of culinary skill and theatrical flair: fiery, captivating, fun, and it’s our favorite part of the experience here. And the skilled chefs who deliver excellent quality food while keeping the atmosphere engaging make us smile like delighted children every time we think about it.
Did we mention the sushi rolls and fried rice receive praise for their taste and value?
Seoul Pub Sushi Chicken & Beer
$$ | (410) 418-9600 | WEBSITE

Seoul Pub Sushi Chicken & Beer, a Korean spot in Ellicott City, offers a whole menu of fried chicken made to order. And it’s changed our perspective on just how crispy chicken can get when it’s fresh from the fryer. What’s even more impressive is the skin on their soy-garlic glazed chicken. It’s subtly sweet and savory, and the skin doesn’t lose any of its crunch from the generous coating.
Come with a crowd, and come hungry—you’ll want to get at least a few bites of everything here, from the spectacular bulgogi to the over-the-top dumplings.
Niko Japanese Restaurant
$$ | (410) 750-3836 | WEBSITE

At Niko Japanese Restaurant in Ellicott City, you’ll want to start with the Sirak C appetizer, which runs about $14. For some exceptional sushi, it’s worth every last dollar. You’ll get generous portions of fresh fish and perfectly seasoned rice, decorated with delicate garnishes. The fish in these rolls is so fresh that it belongs on a boat with a net—there’s not a chewy, bland piece of seafood to be found here.
After your first naked bite, make sure to dip your sushi in the sides of soy sauce and wasabi. Use this spot for a relaxed meal with friends.
Yama Sushi
$$ | (410) 997-3688 | WEBSITE

Settling into the reservable room at Yama Sushi, on a quiet street in Ellicott City, is one of the great ways to spend a relaxed evening in town. Want to make it better? Order a plate of the chef’s Tuna Tartare. It’s everything you want out of this style of sushi. Full of fresh, delicate flavor, and worth savoring every bite, it pairs very well with a crisp sake. Yama Sushi’s main dining area has the same attentive staff and vegan options, but no reservable cozy ambiance.
Umi Sushi
$$ | (410) 480-1888 | WEBSITE

They’ve updated their menu with all sorts of creative rolls in recent months, but Umi Sushi still serves some damn fine nigiri. You can get fresh salmon and tuna at plenty of spots around town, but there’s something about sitting here, on their lovely back patio overlooking the woods and river, and tasting perfectly textured fish over well-seasoned rice that just feels special. Plus, we love the complimentary slices of cheesecake that get served after the meal.
Come here for a casual dinner (the restaurant can get busy during peak hours), start with some sashimi, and enjoy some high-quality sushi in a pleasant setting.
East Moon Asian Bistro
$ | (410) 313-8088 | WEBSITE

This Ellicott City spot offers a beyond-vibrant menu, blending Japanese sushi traditions with Indian-inspired flavors in their drunken noodles. The signature orange chicken features tender, almost velvety, meat, coated in a sauce that glistens like polished lacquer in soft lighting. The enormous sushi platters are no slouch either. Round out your meal with some finely tuned lunch specials that incorporate fresh ingredients, like the perfectly balanced California rolls.
Head here before hosting an event in their spacious dining hall, or for some takeout before a relaxed dinner at home.
Shin Chon
$$ | (410) 461-3280 | WEBSITE

As the name suggests, this authentic Korean restaurant in Ellicott City does make tasty BBQ. The bibimbap is even tastier. It’s incredibly flavorful on the inside, but so sizzling-hot in the stone bowl that the sound of every mix reverberates through the lively dining room. Topped with a perfectly fried egg, the Bibim Naengmyun in particular should be categorized as a controlled substance (and you should spring for the combo meal).
A selection of banchan includes the highly recommended steam egg—which is also put to excellent use alongside the marinated galbi.
Sushi Farm
$$$ | (703) 627-1477 | WEBSITE

As the name suggests, the sushi at this Ellicott City Hmart location is prepared with farm-fresh precision. The gleaming bamboo cutting boards look like they’ve been showcasing pristine fish for the better part of the last decade, producing rolls that are fresh, generous, and—due to the careful assembly—beautifully presented. The ingredients are flavorful through every layer, the rice isn’t too heavy, and the efficient counter service is an excellent option for a quick weekday lunch.
HYEBAN – Korean BBQ
$$$ | (443) 420-3096 | WEBSITE

Ellicott City has several Korean BBQ spots, and HYEBAN, a sleek modern restaurant with private dining areas, is our favorite for bulgogi. The go-to dish here is the LA Galbi: tender, well-marinated short ribs that grill to perfection. Their meat has a rich marinade, and eats juicy, but it’s still got that smoky char. Get it with their crispy vegetable pancake and some flavorful kimchi, or alongside a bowl of bibimbap. The restaurant is perfect for a group dinner with attentive service.
