Hey there, San Diego! This is a city where you can dive into a bowl of fiery tom yum, share sticky rice with mango, and have the chef personally recommend their favorite northern larb. Our Thai spots here have the Pacific’s bounty to work with—think vibrant curries at family-run storefronts alongside modern kitchens crafting things like khao soi burritos and Thai tea tiramisu.
And for good reason: San Diego’s Thai scene is all about bold flavors, warm hospitality, and that perfect balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy.
Tuk Tuk One Thai

There’s something satisfying about a familiar favorite. A reliable pad thai, a comforting curry, and, at Tuk Tuk One Thai, pineapple fried rice with a spicy kick. The combination of sweet pineapple and fiery heat is a memorable one. Find that (and more) at this restaurant, which is on a busy street in a commercial and residential area of San Diego.
From its clean, quiet atmosphere to its generous mango chicken served with fresh mango slices, it’s easy to see that this spot focuses on flavor (despite the small space). Come with a few friends and share some garlic edamame alongside the yellow curry, which has tender vegetables served generously in a rich, aromatic sauce.
55 Thai Kitchen Golden Hill
$ | (619) 955-5501 | WEBSITE

The way 55 Thai Kitchen Golden Hill, a Thai spot in San Diego, packs so much bold flavor into their dishes should be studied by a special task force (and one that we’d like to be a part of). See this phenomenon for yourself by ordering the Drunken Noodles with their perfect balance of spice and savory notes, or any of their fresh, gluten-free options that deliver authentic taste without compromise.
The restaurant is located in a small, casual setting that works for a quick lunch, or a satisfying meal after exploring the nearby market, when everybody wants their own big plate of noodles and bold flavors.

Order the large Tom Kah hot pot during happy hour with 50% off many items and enjoy the neat, clean space with its beautiful decorations.
Street Side Thai Kitchen

Whether it’s debating the best taco shops or arguing about where to find the best craft beer, it seems like nobody in San Diego can agree on anything. That is, besides how good the Thai food is at Street Side Thai Kitchen. While they’re known for the extremely good Drunken Noodles, a generous portion of wide rice noodles stir-fried with vegetables and your choice of protein, the menu also has solid vegetarian options, like Tofu Fried Rice and Summer Rolls.
Swing by for a casual dinner when it’s less crowded and you’ll be greeted by a cozy atmosphere, friendly owners, and the glorious smell of Panang Curry. They have unpredictable hours, but we prefer visiting their North Park location because the food is consistently tasty and the prices are affordable.

Slurp
$ | (858) 289-9937 | WEBSITE

The first few times we tried going to Slurp, we kept missing the entrance—walking through the large parking lot and toward the Liberty Public Market building, you’re not sure if you’re about to enter a restaurant or just another food stall. But once seated outside, you’ll find a casual Southeast Asian spot that’s good for a family outing or just a quick lunch of noodles and rice bowls.
The menu offers delightful twists on traditional dishes, and one of our favorite pastimes is trying something new from their variety. (Also, is it possible to fall in love with a restaurant through their roast duck slurp? Asking for a friend.) For a meal, order anything with the garlic ginger sauce—we consistently dream of the Hainanese chicken—and save room for the orange chicken.
What De Health Thai
$ | (619) 955-5777 | WEBSITE

The Mission Hills location of this Thai favorite may have gained some polish since its earlier days. It’s a little more refined than the typical strip-mall Thai spot—they now have an open-air feel, cute casual decor, and a clean, bright atmosphere. But What De Health Thai still serves up some of the area’s best Thai food, made with simple, fresh ingredients that are cooked with authentic flavors.
According to the staff, the key to good Thai food is using fresh ingredients, so that the dishes never taste heavy or greasy. Curries come with just the right amount of spice, and you should try them with the zucchini pad Thai, a customer favorite that’s both healthy and flavorful. We’re pleased to say you’ll still find a steady stream of the same mix of neighborhood regulars, food enthusiasts, and health-conscious diners enjoying their fill of curries, pad Thai, and other clean Thai options.
Mekong Cuisine Lao & Thai

Convoy Street is the heart of San Diego’s Asian dining scene, and there are few better places to experience the vibrant flavors of Southeast Asia than at this colorful, art-filled space tucked inside a bustling strip mall. And on a busy evening, a meal at one of their cozy tables surrounded by the lively decor wins our vote for best Thai-Lao spot in the neighborhood.
Mekong Cuisine is full of authentic touches, like the nam khao—which is named for the traditional Lao crispy rice salad, and takes the form of perfectly seasoned rice mixed with herbs and sausage. Anything with curry on the menu is a solid choice, with the green curry holding its own against Vancouver’s best. The drunken noodles staple can be found on every iteration of the menu, including their great $28 lunch special for two courses.
Owner Stella ensures every visit feels welcoming, though parking can be tight in the shared lot.
KIIN EXTRAORDINARY THAI
$$ | (858) 925-7318 | WEBSITE

After exploring the latest art installations in North Park, wander over to debate the merits of traditional versus modern Thai cuisine over a meal at KIIN EXTRAORDINARY THAI. The whole concept of this “customizable eatery,” driven by the chef’s ability to adapt dishes to any preference, sounds like a San Diego fantasy, but this place always delivers.
Their menu has dishes like the Tom Yum soup that can be tailored to specific requests, the standout fried rice that sets them apart from other Thai spots, and the eggplant lover with added chicken that’s seasoned and cooked perfectly. The chefs special curry could rival any in Thailand, and Drew’s spicy noodle is served fresh with vibrant vegetables. The lively space in San Diego is perfect for groups but often gets bustling fast, so definitely plan ahead.

Our favorite appetizers are the fresh spring rolls that burst with crisp vegetables and herbs, and the savory satay skewers that outclass most we’ve tried elsewhere. You can really make a meal out of the flavorful options, but it’s worth it to choose at least a few entrees, like the aromatic green curry that’s balanced with creamy coconut milk and tender vegetables. The friendly, attentive staff and guaranteed freshness make every visit a delightful taste of Thailand.
